DP got me the wrong present.

I really wanted the brand new Dyson air wrap for my birthday, it’s almost £600 - I know, ridiculous.

I’ve been squirrelling money away for a couple of months. DP asked me what I’d like for my birthday and I said the air wrap, but it’s a lot of money, so perhaps a contribution towards it. He said he’d buy it for me as it’s a big birthday and he’s getting his bonus from work soon.

My DP is very good at shopping around, getting a discount, we often buy second hand from Facebook and eBay. However, I explained to him that because it’s brand new out (1 month), he likely won’t find it as a bargain anywhere and he’s best off buying it direct from Dyson with our daughters student discount. He agreed and I sent the link.

Come today, I’ve opened my present from him and it’s the Dyson air wrap from quite a few years ago. A much older model without the latest tech or attachments. He was ridiculously pleased with himself and told me he’d got it for much cheaper than the advertised price.

Would you just be honest with him? I don’t want to crush him, he was grinning like a Cheshire Cat, but it’s not what I wanted and I’d rather return it and put the money towards the one I actually wanted. I also don’t want to see ungrateful as it was a lovely gesture.

Or I could just return it and buy the one I want and he’ll likely never know?

all these posts are outrageous!

I haven’t read them all obviously but I don’t see any answers that are not up their own backsides. Like, which world do you all live in?
£600 hair dryer for a present and the man buys a £300 one which he thinks is the same (probably as well because who wants to spend this kind of money on a hair dryer.) then everyone is like ‘oh my goodness what a terrible poor job he has done and poor you, you deserve the exact present you specifically asked for!’

so so so happy that I do not have this mindset.

yes I would say poor man.

TomatoSandwiches · 04/10/2025 21:42

I doubt he paid £300 for it, I'd check that piece of info out op, this man lies to you, this situation and his behaviour is indicative of bigger issues with how he sees you, it's not good.

She wanted to buy it herself. She only asked him to put money towards it for her birthday. He said no, he’d buy the whole thing. She was very clear on the model and the price. He totally ignored her, and got her something old that she doesn’t want.

Why poor man? Especially when SHE WANTED TO BUY IT HERSELF.

We all like to believe that if we were alive in the 17th / 18th century we'd have been abolitionists who nobly refused sugar / coffee / the inheritance from a father in the East India company.

Most of us would have been cleaning the houses of that type of person, or scratching another meagre living.

FrangipaniBlue · 04/10/2025 21:46

RafaFan · 04/10/2025 20:15

I think that might be because of the ridiculous hype around an "advent" calendar that is sold out in September. People get really sucked in by marketing.

I mean you could argue the same about a Dyson hair product……….

in both posts the OP was going to buy something for herself, her DP offered to buy it, OP sent a link with specific instructions which the DP then ignored.

its irrelevant what the product is!

Most of us still are.

Anyone who has £600 to drop on an air wrap, and whose husband thinks £300 is a bargain, is the type of person who isn't scratching a living, and who gets to choose whether or not they want to avoid supporting companies implicated in slavery or if they'd prefer a nice hair-do.

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 04/10/2025 21:48

If you returned it and swapped it for the version you want, would he even notice?

He bought her a USED one one Facebook. He didn't even think his wife was worth a new one. He is being a dick.

It’s back in stock on the website (it’s been in and out since it came out), tempted to just buy it for myself as a birthday present!!

Do it OP, just buy it for yourself. If anyone should be sulking, it’s you! He should’ve bought the one you said using the link you sent him instead of being such a cheap stake. I’d rub it in as well that he’s been had regarding the price after being so smug about having bagged a bargain.

You are being very unreasonable. This will downgrade in value immediately since you bought it.

Why not buy some gold jewellery which will retain its resale value to a certain extent in years to come if not increase in value.

Unless you can show us some pictures of how fantastic your hair is that you never need to visit as hairdresser again.

What a weird response. Your sofa depreciated in value as soon as you got it delivered… why would you buy a sofa? What a waste of money, even if you do use it everyday. You could have had some gold jewellery for that.

You could say that about literally any item in your home, used daily or weekly. It’s utterly stupid to use that as a reason not to get something you will actually use and want.

YoudonemessedupAyAyRon · 04/10/2025 21:56

PresentBlunder · 04/10/2025 20:39

I asked him why he didn’t just buy it from the link and he said because he always manages to get deals on things and he didn’t realise there would be such a difference between models. He saw air wrap and assumed what he’d bought was correct.

Right, so if he wanted the latest iPhone, and you saw something called an iPhone from several years ago and presented it to him as just like the 17, he'd be ok with that, would he? Would he fuck!

plus you can dry your hair with a gold bangle.

Sorry I don't understand why you are bringing sofa's into it?

That's a piece of furniture.

ChickpeaCauliflowerSalad · 04/10/2025 21:59

Moonnstars · 04/10/2025 17:45

Yes I would say something. I would say to him the reason he got a bargain is because it's the older model, not the one you wanted, and ask for the receipt. I would explain you weren't expecting him to pay for the whole thing so maybe he could just contribute what he paid for the cheaper version and you will pay the rest.

I think this is the way to go.

Happy Birthday 🎂

And it just as unnecessary because it loses it’s value. Buy some gold instead. Who cares if you wanted it and use it. I I wonder what else you’ve got in your house that could have been bought cheaper or simply not bought at all.

Just as idiotic as you saying that to OP about something she wants, will use and can afford.

Erm ok, each to their own.

Electrical goods normally break down within their guarantee period that we all know. I'm just saying it might be nice to get something which retains its value.

I think you need to swap them and let him down gently…..

separate note, this thread had gone very differently to the one where OPs DP didn’t get her the beauty calendar she wanted, I guess proof that MNers really do have an issue with grownups having “advent” calendars 😂

Apples & bananas.

It was nothing to do with adults having advent calendars per se.

Surely sofa's and furniture are necessities, I don't think a Dyson hair wrap is?

allmymonkeys · 04/10/2025 22:07

"I also don’t want to see ungrateful as it was a lovely gesture."

No, it wasn't a lovely gesture. It was not listening to a word you said, thinking he knew better, and getting the wrong item. He's a plank. Thank him for trying, explain the difference, and swap out.

dancingbymyself · 04/10/2025 22:07

I also do not believe he paid £300 for an old, secondhand one. If he prides himself on getting a bargain, he will have spent much less but not want to admit that to you.
