11 million immigrants since 2000. When I

Sorry, it’s another immigration one.

I always see immigration discussed in terms of race, religion, who may or may not be a good fit for the UK, whether it’s by small boats - to be honest, this is not the biggest worry for me.

The biggest worry is the sheer increase in our population and how many people this country can reasonably accommodate. We are now 8th in Europe for population density - only behind Belgium and the Netherlands, and a handful of places like Vatican City and the Channel Islands. At present we have net migration of around 500,000 a year.

I’m worried that the key issues of overpopulation are being overlooked to make this conversation all about race. What about our pollution levels, wildlife habitats, flood risk, food security, infrastructure? Will this eventually be a polluted city state country? It seems to be heading that way.

Posters always say we need immigration, but we have already welcome 11 million since 2000. If that still isn’t enough; what is? Or do we just keep going?

Oh dear. You’ve been listening to a particularly thick reform councillor I fear. His views on low reservoirs has been swiftly debunked.

The thing with reservoirs is that people can see them with theirs eyes..

Yep, and they can also look up rainfall totals over the last year, compare these with normal rainfall totals over the period and realise that it's been an unusually dry year.

Your need to blame immigrants is - put charitably - a bit of a reach.

Severn Trent said the low water levels is due to the weather. The same councillor suggested SEN children are “over supported” which will news to SEN parents.

OMG they walk among us!!! It is sad that people fall for this nonsense.

But in contrast with global warming there will a migration of people to the north, and the UK will be an attractive destination,

Possibly so but if jobs are in short supply the mismatch will be problematic

Born outside the U.K. doesn’t equate immigrants.
You can be born outside the U.K. and still be British.

You may possess a British passport and have been born outwith the UK. My DH was born in Cyprus, in 1956, in the British military hospital in Nicosia, Cyprus to a serving Army officer and his wife, who was a nurse trained at the Middlesex hospital in central London. His passport says British, place of birth, Nicosia, Cyprus.

This is the most frightening element in the whole thread. If most of the displaced -by-climate-change migrants are migrating north to more temperate zones, there is going to be conflict as the entire global south decides to move north in pursuit of peace and prosperity. At nearly 70, I am not going to be the person who fights off the invasion but most of MN appears to disagree that invasion is a risk.

Papyrophile · 04/10/2025 20:37

To be clear, I am not suggesting that the invasion will involve planes or tanks. Just rubber dinghies. No military strategist could have envisaged this. And yes, I agree that most migrants arrive by plane with papers, and want only to work for a better future for themselves and their families.

To prevent the uninvited arrivals, now that the size of the rubber boats has increased so vastly since 2020, we need the Navy policing the Strait of Dover and shunting them back to France. When the small boats started, there were 10 or 15 aboard; the current versions carry 100, which is almost the crew of a naval frigate.

I’ve come to the conclusion that at least half the people on MN are so sheltered from most people”’s reality in their M&S naice Christmas, company cars, house in nice area, well respected jobs and good schools, they simply have no idea what is happening and about to have. Re immigration. Large parts of the world will be uninhabitable in a few decades- look to see the type of regime these countries operate. This is what’s coming to us. I don’t know whether it’s stupidity of naivety but I think they think life will carry on as normal here with a bit more cultural diversity and everyone will rub along nicely. If food gets short they might have to supplant their M&s Christmas with something from Sainsburys.

WildLimePoet · 04/10/2025 20:48

You are not being unreasonable OP. But the far left on here will just call you racist for expressing a perfectly valid point.

Papyrophile · 04/10/2025 20:49

There are moments when I am happy to be 70 and therefore unlikely to witness how this plays out. On the basis of my parents longevity, I may have another 18-20 years to go, but I doubt I am going to pick up a cudgel to fight anyone off.

Bumblebee72 · 04/10/2025 18:43

I have posted anything anti-immigration. My posts have assumed we accept immigration what do we do manage it. Lets assume we are good with another 5m people regardless of where they come from in the next 10 years. e.g. we 10 new Manchesters. What do we do to manage it? Move from arguing about the number because you say if you pro-immigration it doesn't matter - if anything presumably want more.

This is like debating with a particularly obtuse stone. Where did I suggest you’ve posted anything anti immigration? Ffs

Other countries are taking steps slowly and surely to protect themselves. China are buying up resources and land around the world. The USA is securing the mineral rights it needs. Russia's looking secure the fertile farm land it needs.

Wow that is insightful. 😆

I think the Reform counsellor is wrong to conclude immigration will cause watershortages, I'm fairly clear the water shortages will cause migration across the world. The South of England now has a better climate for growing champaign than the champaign region in France. Lots of estates are opening vineyard to benefit from this. It is happening and happening quite fast.

Papyrophile · 04/10/2025 20:57

Will they? Have they? Is anyone that disagrees with your opinion ‘far left’. If that’s a truth then does that make you ‘far right?’ Hmmm, things to ponder eh?!

There's not point answering your questions. I've come to conclude you're a bit of a conspiracy theorist given you don't believe the ONS.

Myrtletown · 04/10/2025 21:06

Ok, I’m going to leave the conversation with you here. It’s not constructive and it’s hard to debate with you as you’re a bit all over the place. So every response is met with a random ‘other’. Bit of a Trump move I guess. Confuse and obfuscate.

I do realise that most people living in the UK realise that it is not the land of milk and honey, and free health care with generous benefits for all. But there are some folk who think they are suave enough to smooth past the guardians.

Fifteen years ago, we travelled around the world to celebrate DH living through catastrophic health issues. We spent a month in Sri Lanka and rented a lovely house, owned by a woman who had gone to Leeds for an operation, which her DS (an NHS employee) had assured her would be free on the NHS.

The NHS declined to treat her, because she had no entitlement to treatment for free.
