11 million immigrants since 2000. When I

Sorry, it’s another immigration one.

I always see immigration discussed in terms of race, religion, who may or may not be a good fit for the UK, whether it’s by small boats - to be honest, this is not the biggest worry for me.

The biggest worry is the sheer increase in our population and how many people this country can reasonably accommodate. We are now 8th in Europe for population density - only behind Belgium and the Netherlands, and a handful of places like Vatican City and the Channel Islands. At present we have net migration of around 500,000 a year.

I’m worried that the key issues of overpopulation are being overlooked to make this conversation all about race. What about our pollution levels, wildlife habitats, flood risk, food security, infrastructure? Will this eventually be a polluted city state country? It seems to be heading that way.

Posters always say we need immigration, but we have already welcome 11 million since 2000. If that still isn’t enough; what is? Or do we just keep going?

"What remains of the countryside"

As you're so big on facts you'll know what percentage of this country is built on right?

Just under 10% which is an awful lot.

(I’ll wait for the people who seem to think a garden and local park indicates plenty of space and shriek ‘that’s hardly anything!!’)

The U.K. has NEVER been self sufficient, even less so after the industrialisation.
Even during WWII when all the farmland used was maximised, it only managed to cover about 60% of the needs.
It’s not new. And has little to do with ‘immigration’

Of course it has been. But population growth is making us even more reliant on imports. More reliance on imports is a bad thing

If something is posted that isn't true, it should be removed. Especially a post like this in the current climate.

But you and others have challenged the figures. People will make their own minds up.

BallerinaRadio · 04/10/2025 10:13

Livelovebehappy · 04/10/2025 10:11

Seriously? You think people on here haven’t already made their own minds up about situations, based on their own research? I honestly don’t think anyone coming on here is going to change their minds or blindly follow someone based on figures provided on one post. It’s all relative. Figures can be manipulated or twisted to meet someone’s agenda on both sides.

They do though. They absolutely do this is the problem. Someone comes on here sees this and now they think 11 million immigrants have come over and they then spread this figure.

This post is absolutely a problem.

Blusteryskies · 04/10/2025 10:13

MaurineWayBack · 04/10/2025 10:08

So that’s the new idea re immigration?
We need to stop immigration to protect little birds? That’s the argument?

🫣🫣

The arguments they're coming out with these days are unbelievable. There was a Reform councillor who was blaming sewage in the waterways on immigrants, rather than on the water companies who have ploughed billions into shareholders' pockets rather than investing in critical infrastructure. Absolute clowns the lot of them, but what does it say about this country that so many are lapping up this garbage.

miamiamia869 · 04/10/2025 10:13

You are bang on. I work in a hospital thay works daily at double capacity. Most staff atleast doing the job of 2 people sometimes alot more. There are not enough hospitals or health care facilities for the populstions. Some goes for schools, houses, roads.

There is no 1 reliable source which gives an exact figure for net migration since 2000.

But we do have a number for net each year, and this adds up to many millions regardless of how you slice and dice it.

Ive challenged you to do the numbers, post them here and prove me wrong. Why won’t you?

ViciousCurrentBun · 04/10/2025 10:14

MIL is 83 she has just had treatment for cancer, no idea of the exact cost but not that that ago she would probably be dead by now.

The human race has become too good at surviving, it’s actually a real problem as odd as that seems. Malthus was writing about it in the 1700’s and saw the projected population figures as being an issue. Have a look at The Malthusian catastrophe if interested. What he didn’t factor in was the huge advances in modern medicine.

@CatchingtheCat Labour have zero idea regarding farming. We stayed on a hill farm in Wales last week. He admits on paper his farm is worth a lot but it’s all in the land. He has no idea how the inheritance tax will be paid when he dies. It’s not some lowland with easy access to services that a builder would like it’s literally in the middle of nowhere.

All the Green initiatives are pissing in the wind really, the entire population of the planet needs reducing.

It was all about survive of the fittest for most of humankind’s existence, it isn’t any more.

Is it ‘garbage’ that we are only of the most densely populated countries in Europe, and only number 8 because we count Vatican City, the Channel Islands etc?

You’re just not grasping the argument at all.

For those who say increase in population is because we are living longer - it is no longer true, life expectancy has started to drop.

Ok, so please give me a figure as to total net migration from 2000 to present? Or even last reporting year.

The ONS says 11 million immigrants have entered the UK since 2000?

You're the one publicly claiming this as fact can you show your source or some evidence?

Let me google that for you.

ONS says population of the UK ins 2000 was 58,886,100 and in 2024 it was 69,281,437. The official number to mid 2024 was 10.4m, plus the increase in the last year suggest 11m is about right.

There are many posts on MN where the facts and figures and content are not spot on. People can challenge them on the information, then people will read and take into account the alternative take from others. I think people generally are intelligent enough to do their own fact finding.

If only that were true. 😵‍💫

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 04/10/2025 10:16

BallerinaRadio · 04/10/2025 08:50

And you think that whole 11 million is immigrants? I think you've had a bit of a mare here and should probably delete this post

Well the birth rate is falling, yes people are living longer but it is likely a substantial part of that growth has come from net migration. Migration and lack of integration is a massive issue for this country. We do not have the resources to cope, it is diluting the British culture. Multiculturalism is a massive issue

there’s nothing wrong with immigration - uk needs more people to keep its economy going. The question is getting the right people who are going to contribute to society and providing them jobs and ways to do so. This country is too focused on old pensioners that everything else has fallen by the wayside.

I don't think anyone can say 'there’s nothing wrong with immigration'. There are upsides and downsides to everything in life. The important thing is to weight up both the advantages and disadvantages before deciding whether to pursue or continue with something.

Given I have provided you with the evidence. What your actual thoughts on the subject now that you know that the population growths is clearly materially different to what you had been lead to believe before?
