Is it ridiculous to spend this much money on a bed?

After months of searching I've found a bed that I love. But its £1600. And I'll need to buy a mattress. Ive never had money to spend on furniture before and I've never had a new bed, only second hand. Is it ridiculous to spend this much money on a bed?

i think so
problem is the more you keep looking you are always drawn to the more expensive - because they are better

it depends on your budget though

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 03/10/2025 17:32

No. It's where you spend a third of your time. If you can afford it then go for it

TutTutTutSigh · 03/10/2025 17:33

If you can afford it AND a decent (£1k+) mattress then yes. If not I'd spend £600 on the bed and £1000 on the mattress

Aoap78 · 03/10/2025 17:33

Fully depends on your budget. If you can afford it (assuming you have more money recently given your description), you do you, and enjoy. If it’s a stretch I would suggest looking at other a bit less expensive beds :)

I can afford it. Ive got other furniture to buy so I might have to reduce what I spend on the other furniture but I'm fine to do that.

I would always consider the mattress before the bed. It doesn't matter how nice the bed is if you can't afford a decent mattress.

Skybluepinky · 03/10/2025 17:34

If you can afford it, but you need a decent mattress or you are just wasting your money.

grumpygrape · 03/10/2025 17:34

Reasonable if it's a quality one. Unreasonable if it's a fashion one.

Anywherebuthere · 03/10/2025 17:35

It's not ridiculous if it's a necessity and you can afford it.

A good bed and mattress should last you many years. It would need to come with a decent guarantee at that price.

WinterOnItsWayOut · 03/10/2025 17:35

I spent about £2k on mine (inc mattress) and it’s the loveliest bed ever! It was my present to myself after separating from DH. The amount of time we spend in bed, I reckon it’s a great investment and good for my back and sleep which are both v important.

i do second a good mattress though

PeloMom · 03/10/2025 17:35

we spend a third of our lives in bed. A good bed is worth the investment
ETA- that goes for the mattress , pillows etc too

QueenOfToast · 03/10/2025 17:36

Comfort is much more important than aesthetics to me, so I would be inclined to spend a lot of money on a mattress and then only as much as necessary on the bed frame/divan.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 03/10/2025 17:37

Let’s see.

mrsh2025 · 03/10/2025 17:37

We spent slightly more than that and I can absolutely justify it. A good nights sleep is so important

CrimsonStoat · 03/10/2025 17:41

I spent £25 on a pine bed frame off Ebay, and £1100 on a mattress.which really pushed my budget.

I very rarely think new furniture is worth the price, but that's just me.

The frame has lasted 15 years and still in good order.

Topseyt123 · 03/10/2025 17:43

I think it was back in1996 that we bought our bed. We bought the best bed and mattress we could afford at the time and it was £800 or £900 back then.

We didn't regret it at all. We've replaced the mattress a couple of times since as they do wear out. We didn't skimp there either.

A decent bed is worth the investment. Good for your physical and mental health.

Cinaferna · 03/10/2025 17:46

20 years ago, I spent £1000 on a mattress. I felt sick at the extravagance. No exaggeration, it changed my life. I realised I'd never slept in a comfortable bed before in my life! Due to DS2 having severe illness I'd been very sleep-deprived for about four years and it was so wonderful to just curl up and catch up at every available opportunity. That mattress lasted 18 years so it earned its keep. Couldn't find one as good when it needed replacing so bought an Emma which is meh. I dream of finding one as brilliant.

Personally I'd invest in the mattress more than the frame. But if you love it and it's a classic style that will last, why not? As PP said, you spend 1/3 of your life there.

OhNoNotSusan · 03/10/2025 17:49

are you happy with the size?

Nosurprisethere · 03/10/2025 17:50

You spend more time in your bed than in your car yet people will spend thousands on a car. You can’t beat a comfortable nights sleep.

This. I spent this on an adjustable bed and it has been worth every penny.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 03/10/2025 18:01

Looking for a new bed - can you give a link to the one you have found?

Edited

You spend more time in your bed than on your sofa and 1600 would be a budget sofa. Get a good mattress.

NutButterOnToast · 03/10/2025 18:01

You will definitely get value for money from a good bed.

If you can afford it do it

greenbackground · 03/10/2025 18:06

Ikea matress expensive one is ok

EmeraldShamrock000 · 03/10/2025 18:09

Why not, if you can afford it, if I'd to choose between a good mattress or good have, I'd invest more in the mattress.
