Is it ridiculous to spend this much money on a bed?

After months of searching I've found a bed that I love. But its £1600. And I'll need to buy a mattress. Ive never had money to spend on furniture before and I've never had a new bed, only second hand. Is it ridiculous to spend this much money on a bed?

If you can afford it and it's worth it to you, go for it. But not if it means skimping on the mattress, which is the bit that will determine whether you wake up with backache.

DancingFerret · 03/10/2025 18:11

If it's within your budget, go for it.

We spent just over £3000 on a Vispring mattress a couple of years ago - and it was worth every penny. A good night's sleep isn't a luxury, it's essential for your wellbeing.

ChillBarrog · 03/10/2025 18:20

If you can afford it and you want it, who cares?

You should invest wisely in shoes and beds, if you're not in one you're in the other.

NapoleonsToe · 03/10/2025 18:24

It's all about the mattress, rather than the bed frame. I'd spend more than £1000 on a mattress, but the bed frame is much less important.

Thelnebriati · 03/10/2025 18:24

How often would you need to replace it, and would you be able to afford to buy it again next time you need a new bed?
I bought a new mattress a few years ago, it suits me and didn't feel too expensive for the difference its made. But the next thing I realised was I also needed to find the right pillow, and I need to replace those regularly. So I wouldn't sink a lot of money into one part of the bed.

But if it's important to OP, then it is. She can spend what she wants 🤷

ItIsEverywhere · 03/10/2025 18:45

Although it is a lot at once, we've had one bed frame for ten years and another for 20. We only relegated older one to spare as we decided to go super-king, so spend it but make sure the size is right!
This is assuming you don't need to scrimp on mattress to afford it.

GreatTheCat · 03/10/2025 18:52

You can't beat a good bed! I've spent £200, £450, £1,000, £2,200 and £3,100 on a bed and mattress over the years.

Whatever you can afford.

Overthebow · 03/10/2025 18:56

I think the mattress is more important than the bed, so I’d spend more on that and then get a cheaper bed. You don’t really see much of the bed itself once mattress and bedding are on it.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 03/10/2025 18:58

I had a great mattress and shit basic frame, it was comfy (but I couldn't sit up and read) but looked shit, a friend gave me their old bed frame that was gorgeous and it made my bedroom feel SO luxurious and comfortable, its still such a sanctuary that it wasn't before and I didn't appreciate how much t would be.

If you have to scrimp on the mattress to afford it then no but if not then absolutely yes, 100%

Dutchhouse14 · 03/10/2025 19:00

Not sure how to vote is it on your last sentence" is it ridiculous to spend this much on a bed" that we are voting on?

Anyway buy it! If you can afford it and it will make you happy and it's the type of bed frame that will last for absolutely years then get it.

We also need a link/photo of bed.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 03/10/2025 19:01

My bed frame cost more than that over a decade ago and I have never regretted it.
I still think it's beautiful and that is never going to change.

You spend more time in your bed than you do in any car you own and I don't think you can even buy a car for that small a price nowadays.

If you really love it and you can afford it, I'd go for it.

A decent bed (including a decent mattress) with really good bedding is my most important investment in my house and has massively improved not only the quality of my sleep, but even just having a lie in, or curling up early to read a book is nicer.

Comtesse · 03/10/2025 19:02

OhNoNotSusan · 03/10/2025 17:49

are you happy with the size?

Yes that’s a good point. Super King for the win!!

clary · 03/10/2025 19:04

I would spend more on a bed and importantly the mattress than on, say, a dining table; yes the table is seen by guests but if your sleep is good bc the bed is comfy and supportive then that's valuable indeed.

A good sofa is worth money IMO too.

Agree we need a linky to the bed @Ribenafan98

Eyesopenwideawake · 03/10/2025 19:04

I bought a bed for €5000 back in 2004. 21 years later it is still supremely comfortable and will probably outlive me.

Lennonjingles · 03/10/2025 19:05

We spent £1,000 on our bed 25 years ago, there’s nothing wrong with it now, we have had 2 new mattresses since, but the base and headboard are still in a really good condition, it’s got a solid base, not like the beds you buy now, so spend wisely.

TroysMammy · 03/10/2025 19:07

Not if you can afford it. I bought a wooden bed frame April 1989 for £200 which was a lot of money for me then. I still have it, it's solid and I still love it. I'll probably die in it.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 03/10/2025 19:10

Our vispring cost £10,000 about 15 years ago and is amazing. It will go on and on. Spend as much as you can afford on a bed. You spend alot of time in it.

MasterMind1982 · 03/10/2025 19:11

Mattress

Spookygoose · 03/10/2025 19:17

What kind of bed is it? I’d say no matter how much money you have a £1600 bed is a rip off and isn’t going to be any better than a £1000 one. I splashed out and spent £1000 on a bed a few years ago and thought that was going way OTT! Although prices have increased…so if you’ve shopped around maybe that’s just the price of the higher end ones now

PolkaDotPorridge · 03/10/2025 19:19

Absolutely not ridiculous! Our bed and mattress are expensive and so comfortable. We all spend so much time in bed, make it as perfect for you as possible!

MeAndMyGhost · 03/10/2025 19:25

Spend money on shoes and your bed, because if you're not in one you're in the other.

Buy the best you can afford.

RubySquid · 03/10/2025 19:29

Nosurprisethere · 03/10/2025 17:50

You spend more time in your bed than in your car yet people will spend thousands on a car. You can’t beat a comfortable nights sleep.

Edited

Lol wish I did. I definitely spend more time in car than in bed

chunkybear · 03/10/2025 19:42

I paid £1200 for our bed without a mattress, it’s as good as the day I bought it probably 12 years ago, I’ve had 2 mattress changes as they get worn out but the bed itself is brilliant still - quality lasts usually!

Tonianlilly · 03/10/2025 19:45

Before you decide (unless £ is not an issue) cost up a proper luxury beneficial mattress (by luxury i dont mean the 20k ones! ... but at same time not ikea or the cheapest.) Go to the bed shop and choose what suits you best. Then see if the bed is still ok cost wise

I think we spent 2k on a mattress 12 years ago and maybe 1600 on the bed. Was super king size.

In short yanbu if u can afford it
