Is it ridiculous to spend this much money on a bed?

After months of searching I've found a bed that I love. But its £1600. And I'll need to buy a mattress. Ive never had money to spend on furniture before and I've never had a new bed, only second hand. Is it ridiculous to spend this much money on a bed?

My bed frame cost me £1100 in 2010. Still as good as the day I bought it.

if you have the money and you love it, and will still love it in a decade, get it

Sophue · 04/10/2025 18:14

We moved into our forever house and splashed out on a superking sleigh bed with a fabulous memory mattress. Yes it cost nearly 2K but its been so well worth it. Just go for it as you won't regret it!

Biskieboo · 04/10/2025 18:16

Absolutely not ridiculous at all. You spend (give or take) a third of your time there. I bet you wouldn't bat an eyelid at spending ten times that amount on a car when a much cheaper one will do what you need it to. Go for it!

Mrsgreen100 · 04/10/2025 18:38

I would be buying a more expensive mattress to be honest, the bed of the bed, but the mattress is the most important

ninjahamster · 04/10/2025 18:40

We have always had second hand or cheap furniture.
A couple of years ago I won a 2.6k bed and mattress. It’s astounding how much more luxurious it is!

CinnamonJellyBeans · 04/10/2025 18:42

Like PP, I'd spend the money on the mattress.

Nothing nicer than getting into a comfortable bed and barely having time to groan appreciatively before you're asleep.

Blablibladirladada · 04/10/2025 18:52

If you have more than this yes.
if you spend all in it, then buy an ikea one and be done with it. Then if the boiler gives you will be warm AND in a new bed.

edit gives UP on you

TaterTots68 · 04/10/2025 19:11

We spent (what I consider to be) a lot on our bed. I don't regret it at all, it was worth every penny. We sized up (super king) and went for a tempur mattress and it's so comfortable and we have so much room. Yep, you owe it to yourself to buy the best bed you can afford

celticprincess · 04/10/2025 19:45

I’ve had my bed base for 25 years!! I did get a new mattress about 10 years ago (maybe less but before COVID). So I’d say a bed is an investment. I would love to change the base now to one of those loft up for storage types as we have those for the kids and have so much more space. But it seems a massive hassle to get rid of my old king size base. lol.

RememberDecember · 04/10/2025 19:51

How does anyone try out a mattress these days, they all seem to be sold online and not stocked anywhere?

itsmeafterall · 04/10/2025 19:58

No it's not. If you have the money , love it and it's good quality then go for it.

We just bought a £3k bed and it's the best thing ever. So so comfy, beautiful to look at and we sleep much bettor er for it.

Never spent that much on a bed. Ever. So worth it !

As I’ve got older I’ve come up agree with the saying that you should buy the best bed you can afford and the best shoes you can afford as if you’re not in one you’re in the other!

Lovehascomeandgone · 04/10/2025 21:03

If you can afford it without putting it on credit then go for it.

pineapplesundae · 04/10/2025 21:05

Then go for it and don’t look back!

andanotherproblem · 04/10/2025 21:05

No, a bed is the most important furnature you can buy, you spend 50% of your life in bed, I would 100% spend more

Hankunamatata · 04/10/2025 21:08

I would focus on best quality mattress you can afford then look at base to meet budget

Dunnowhatimat · 04/10/2025 21:28

Depends on how much you have really. I'd be all for spending a good amount on a good mattress rather than the bed frame. As another post on MN pointed out - we spend so much of our lives in bed! Best to get a good mattress

LividArse · 04/10/2025 21:30

Need a picture of the bed!

Sprocket1 · 04/10/2025 21:50

I spent £4000 on a vispring bed & Mattress and it’s absolutely the best thing i’ve ever done .If you can afford it …do it we’ve had it now 8 years and it’s still like new and will last a lot longer than most

Offthecorporateratrace · 04/10/2025 21:55

We spent about £3500 on a super king size bed, hands down the best money we’ve spent. I love my bed and always get a good nights sleep.

Redragtoabull · 04/10/2025 22:42

Spend money on good shoes and a good bed, if you're not in one, you're usually in the other. Knock yourself out and do it. You won't regret it

BobbySox71 · 05/10/2025 00:32

23 years ago we spent £400 what was lot of money at the time on a bed frame. It’s a classic frame that will never go out of date. Needless to say we’ve spent a lot more on decent mattresses over the years

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 05/10/2025 00:35

The mattress is far more important but it also matters that the mattress and frame work together. A bad frame can affect the life of a good mattress.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 05/10/2025 08:21

Not getting the hate for ikea mattresses. I had one, and shock horror a standard double bed, very comfy and the right level of support.

Given we are both very happy with the mattress, when we replace it, we won’t be looking to spend triple the price.

There seems to be some competitive spending on here as the costs are going up and up.

OP if you love the bed frame go for it - you’re the one looking at it everyday.

Many years ago I was advised to never skimp when buying a mattress or shoes because I'd either be in one or the other!
