Is it ridiculous to spend this much money on a bed?

After months of searching I've found a bed that I love. But its £1600. And I'll need to buy a mattress. Ive never had money to spend on furniture before and I've never had a new bed, only second hand. Is it ridiculous to spend this much money on a bed?

I would spend more money on the mattress than the bed frame.

This is what I was going to say too.

I think my Super King was about £2800 5 years ago, that was with about 30% off too, and we bought the headboard separately (inexpensive at about £60 from Amazon) as the matching headboard wasn't on offer and was about another £1100......I have no regrets!

ETA: the mattress was the most expensive bit

Chazbots · 03/10/2025 20:03

Cheap frame, Vispring mattress here.

Probably saved my back & the cost for treatment many times over. So good. Love my bed. 😍

Bearbookagainandagain · 03/10/2025 20:06

We did spend that much (before children) and honestly I really regret it.

In the end it's the mattress that matters the most for comfort, so the frame is mostly esthetic. Yes our bed is nice but really all we do in there is sleep, so we barely think about what it looks like anymore.

And also, now that we would probably need a bigger one, we won't because it really feels like a waste of money!

Powerof321 · 03/10/2025 20:07

Not if you can afford it but i’d bother more about the mattress.

i spent £3k on my bed 3 years ago. £1600k on the mattress and £1400 on the bed frame. I sleep in it every night & wanted to be comfortable.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 03/10/2025 20:13

No, but mine is of a similar price and it gives me joy every time I get in it! It is beautiful, and the kind of bed that I've always wanted (i.e. a sleigh bed with storage underneath).

As PPs have said, you spend a third of your life in bed, so I'd rather spend more money on my bed than an expensive car or something. Also, my bed is less maintenance and likely to last much longer than my car!

BrightLightTonight · 03/10/2025 20:18

You spend so much time in bed, don’t skimp. Buy the best and it will last years

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 03/10/2025 20:26

I would if it’s a sensible one that you won’t want to change quickly. We spent about that on a bed and mattress together nearly 20 years ago. The mattress turned out to be wrong , but the bed frame is still going strong.

CarefullyCuratedFurniture · 03/10/2025 20:27

SHOW US THE BED!!!

overstimulatedhermit · 03/10/2025 20:32

I’ve only ever had a bed secondhand so when I came into a little bit of money this year i redecorated my room and splashed out on a new bed. A fancy one with a tv in the foot of the bed and a brand new simba mattress. I adore going to bed getting all snuggly and watching a film, it’s the highlight of my day and I don’t regret buying it for a second. YOLO

ScholesPanda · 03/10/2025 20:40

No, not ridiculous at all. As PPs have said, it's where you spend a third of your time and a good night's sleep is important.

If it is good quality and you intend to keep it and not change it next time you fancy restyling the bedroom, I think it is a reasonable amount to spend.

letshavetea · 03/10/2025 21:06

Go for it! I have a very expensive Heals bed and mattress. It’s blissfully comfortable. Looks good too!

Dogdaycommeth · 03/10/2025 21:09

Ive spent a lot of money on beds (my current bed / mattress combo was £10k) over the years.
Do it.
Mattress is also equally important. Buy the best you can.

dottiedodah · 03/10/2025 21:10

I read a quote somewhere that you should Always buy a good bed and shoes.logic that if you're not spending time in one you'll be in the other one! Makes sense I think

FuzzyWolf · 03/10/2025 21:11

Having been bed shopping recently I thought you were going to be asking if it was unreasonable to spend over £30k on a bed.

Beds seem to have gone up massively in price in recent years. I was really taken aback by the prices.

Crunchienuts · 03/10/2025 21:17

A good bed can last a long time and sleeping well is priceless so I would go for it if you can afford it!

user1497787065 · 03/10/2025 21:24

By the best you can afford also I recommend a Vi-Spring mattress.

opencecilgee · 03/10/2025 22:08

No, that’s not expensive for a bed

HundredMilesAnHour · 03/10/2025 22:13

Not at all. I spend over £1k on my bed (frame and headboard) over 12 years ago. I still love it and it makes me feel incredibly happy and grown-up.

Crazycatladywithnocats · 03/10/2025 22:15

I’m the devil on your shoulder saying “you love it, so buy it”. Seriously though, if your heart is set, no other bed will do.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 03/10/2025 22:28

We bought a new bed a month ago from Furniture Village £2000 in the sale. There was one which was £15995 in the sale but we gave it a serve.

canchewcashew · 03/10/2025 22:35

I'd prioritise the mattress and any other furniture where comfort will be a factor. So, sofa/couch, chairs of any sort. You should be able to get a sturdy, nice-looking bed frame for much less. But that's just my opinion. If you love the frame and can afford it without having to settle for an uncomfortable mattress and other furniture, it's obviously your choice to make.

ifyoulikealotofchocolateonyour · 03/10/2025 22:37

Depends on the bed! If it's beautifully made, won't date and you can afford to budget another £800 or so for a decent mattress then go for it. If not then don't bother!

If you can afford it I don't think it's a ridiculous amount of money to spend on something that you'll be spending 8+ hours a day in for the next 10 years at least.
