Is it ridiculous to spend this much money on a bed?

After months of searching I've found a bed that I love. But its £1600. And I'll need to buy a mattress. Ive never had money to spend on furniture before and I've never had a new bed, only second hand. Is it ridiculous to spend this much money on a bed?

It's an investment in your physical and mental health. You can't put a price on a really good night's sleep.

TheGrimSmile · 05/10/2025 11:32

Not if you can afford it. You sleep in it every night and will have it for probably 10 or more years so it's worth it.

ComfortFoodCafe · 05/10/2025 11:33

I spent £1800 on a bed & a mattress. Best thing I ever did after years of sleeping on crappy metal beds.

But if it's important to OP, then it is. She can spend what she wants 🤷

She was asking for opinions Grin

Whatever else I might have to economise on, there are two things which I will never, ever skimp on : Beds & tyres.

zingally · 05/10/2025 13:11

Beds are horrifyingly expensive!
I was recently in the market for a simple single bed for the spare bedroom, nothing fancy. Still over £500!

GoldBalonz · 05/10/2025 13:15

I wouldn't skimp on a mattress...our Simba is the best money we ever spent.

A bed, without mattress though...it would have to be pretty damn special at that price 😂

Owl55 · 05/10/2025 13:24

I’m considering buying the premier inn mattress direct as I’ve never had a bad nights sleep there , they are not cheap but are so comfortable .

They're really not though 🤔 Like many other things, they're as expensive as you make them.

Our kingsize bed cost £125 (Argos). We were very lucky this time last year and got it on sale but it was only £225 at full price...it's still for sale at that price now. It's kingsize, and a very simple but attractive design - white wood with a wooden headboard. It looks lovely in our room and it's as solid as a rock. Zero chips, marks, creaks or movement, it's really sturdy and decently made.

There's nothing wrong with spending £500 on a bed frame if you want of course, but it's absolutely not necessary, especially just for a single!

That did include the mattress...

£125 sounds very, very cheap for a bed. I'd be concerned about longevity and quality at that price, but if you're happy with it, then great!

Don’t skimp on shoes or mattresses, you’re either in one or the other!

Ahhh apologies, I thought you meant just the bed.

We're about 14 months in now and so far the bed is still perfect...time will tell though!

YourWinter · 05/10/2025 14:14

The solid wooden frame for my bed was £25 from an advert in the village shop window in 2005 and it will still be as good when I’m long gone. I replace the mattress every 10 years.

angela1952 · 05/10/2025 14:59

Nothing wrong with spending this much if you have the money. I recently spend £800 on a lovely mattress, but it was ex-display so very good value. I wouldn't often replace the actual bed, just the mattress - assuming the base was still in reasonable condition.
If not then a simple bed base is relatively cheap and I'd spend most on the mattress.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 05/10/2025 15:08

Absolutely not. Shoes and beds are the two things worth spending on.

dh280125 · 05/10/2025 22:32

Hell no. I spent an amount I'm too embarrassed to admit to on my bed, then bought an identical one when we had a loft extension because the original was too much of a hassle to move. Best two things I ever bought. Guests love it when they see it.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 06/10/2025 16:14

Spend OP if you can afford it. We got a cheap devan and cheap headboard and had it upholstered then spent more on the mattress.

lilkitten · 07/10/2025 17:39

I would on the actual bed. I'm just never as keen on spending a huge amount on a mattress, as you have to get rid of them so often. I've had my bed 19 years, so I think it's well worth any money spent on the bed. I keep putting off a new mattress as they're so much

user1471538283 · 07/10/2025 17:50

I would do it! Years ago when my DS was small and I didn't earn that much I paid £500 for a bed and then whatever the going rate was for a decent mattress. Like you I'd never had a new bed. I absolutely love it and still have it!

In that time my DS has had several beds!

Calamitousness · 07/10/2025 17:51

YANBU. Mine was double that 10 years ago. Best thing I ever did. No more back problems. Sleep amazing. That included the mattress mind you which was over £2000 alone.
