Colleague sent me message by mistake

Islandhopper10 · 03/10/2025 17:15

Our team work remotely but we get together quarterly in person. Yesterday was a meeting in the office in the morning followed by a social so it was casual dress.

I was messaging a colleague earlier back and forth about work matters and he sent something really random and then instantly deleted it but I saw it pop up as a notification so read it.

It said ‘she knew what she was doing in those leggings’ with a sweat emoji.

Now I was the only one wearing leggings yesterday so it was definitely about me. This was at about 3.30 today and I finished at 4 so nothing more was said and I expect my colleague thinks he deleted it before I saw it.

Would you say something if you were me or pretend/forget I ever saw it?

This has got to be a wind up.

It said ‘she knew what she was doing in those leggings’ with a sweat emoji.

Maybe you were sweating so much you had sweat patches on your groin and backside and were a bit pongy.

It's a compliment about her looking hot in the leggings.

it's a turn of phrase. Not sexist what so ever

Are you high? It's completely sexist and inappropriate and doesn't matter whether positive or otherwise you don't email colleagues about another colleagues body especially with sexual overtones (she was hot, making him hot) and especially not the absolutely outrageous she knows what she was doing like the OP was inviting comments and objectification of her body because of her trouser choice. I would go to HR immediately it has total victim blaming she was asking for it vibes and is abhorrent

NellieElephantine · 03/10/2025 19:57

ClareBlue · 03/10/2025 19:35

There is of course another possible side. It wasn't a sexual comment whatsoever. It was a factual comment between work colleagues who were fed up of another colleague dressing inappropriately to attract attention because she has an attitude that she is the most attractive in the office and out shines all her frumpy fat female colleagues. Maybe the male colleagues are fed up with OPs attitude. Just a thought😁

Just think it's amusing that op automatically assumes the comments about her! They could have been discussing some on social media or tv!

Pineconesandpetals · 03/10/2025 19:57

I highly doubt this is genuine. On the off chance that it is…..Whilst dress codes in the work place have significantly relaxed in the last few years, particularly since Covid, I do not think that “scrunch bum” leggings and a tight t shirt are appropriate work place attire. Unless you work in a gym? I also fail to see the relevance of the dress size of your female colleagues.
That said, he was a pig to comment on it, but I would do or say nothing,

I believe that we should be able to wear what we want without people making lewd comments. You can't control what you think but you have control over what you do with those thoughts. They should have kept them to themselves.

The OP just tried to publicly shame all of her female colleagues making out they could wear scrunch leggings, so is hardly whiter than white.

Scrunch leggings are vulgar and certainly not for the workplace. Their whole purpose is to make the bum look shapely and stand out, leavimg nothing to the imagination, so if the guy thought she knew what she was doing is in trying to draw attention to her arse and figure. Yes she did.

I bet many of the female colleges also commented to others in the same way. Attention seeker gets attention, just as she expected. The guy was just stupid enough to give her the satisfaction by sending the message to her by mistake. He quickly deleted when realised the error. Could just have easily have come from a female college in this instance

Normal leggings she may have had a point as they are not designed with the sole purpose of showing off the arse

BlazenWeights · 03/10/2025 20:00

Scrunch leggings are those leggings that go into the buttocks right? Where do you work that you can dress so inappropriately? A gym?

Endorewitch · 03/10/2025 20:01

Drop him a message saying you are glad he noticed your leggings!!That will shut him up. Crass comment but dont report it.

Could have been a woman, it’s pervy definitely but if you’re objectifying yourself by wearing something that is designed to be accentuate your arse (literally their purpose)then don’t be surprised when people comment. They weren’t saying she deserved anything, they said she knew what she was doing. We should really all agree on that, just not it should have been commented on in a work environment, just like scrunch leggings shouldn’t be worn in a work environment.

FriedFalafels · 03/10/2025 20:02

Islandhopper10 · 03/10/2025 17:54

They were just bog standard scrunch leggings with a tight fit casual t shirt, I didn’t really give them much thought to be honest!

You may have not give your outfit much thought but it sounds like you’ve got a few of your colleagues hot and bothered by your outfit choice

Shegotanology · 03/10/2025 20:03

@BrokenWingsCantFly As I said, we can control our actions but not our thoughts. Their comment was disgusting, just as disgusting as the OP fat-shaming.

I thought the same that she looked good in them.’

Really?? Yeesh. Worrying.

DIYagainstMould · 03/10/2025 20:09

He ( it is a he?) is testing you did you know that you were sexy in leggins

sweetpickle2 · 03/10/2025 20:10

The OP, if real, is incredibly rude about her colleagues and doesn't come across very likeable. However there is no excuse for objectifying women in the workplace, no matter what they're wearing. Both things can be true!

She did, she said they were scrunch leggings

🤣🤣 Well that'll teach me to read posts properly before I reply 🤣

CALM DOWN!!

lol, agree

Konstantine8364 · 03/10/2025 20:12

Personally I'd tell him you saw the message and that it's inappropriate and leave it at that. Then if he does anything again tell HR next time!

Miyagi99 · 03/10/2025 20:13

What are Friday nights for if not this, I for one am loving this interaction.

LadyLapsang · 03/10/2025 20:13

Issues such as this are why clear written dress codes can be helpful in guiding people towards appropriate dressing for the workplace.

OP explained it was casual dress because there was a social after the meeting. And judging by some of the comments here if I were a man I’d be afraid to open my mouth in the company of any woman.

Of course it’s sexist - it’s objectifying her. He wouldn’t have said the same about a man.

And I agree with reporting it and expecting chat logs to be reviewed. It’s not acceptable and employers are required to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment.

How is it sexist for a man to fancy a woman and tell his mate? Have you never told a friend about a guy you fancy?!

nutbrownhare15 · 03/10/2025 20:15

ginasevern · 03/10/2025 17:48

It's the "she knows what she's doing" bit that pretty much sums up misogyny. It was a common phrase amongst drooling middle aged, pot bellied blokes back in the 70's when I was a teenager in my first job. They'd say "you know just what you're doing", so putting the onous on me for existing (and presumably being nothing more than a slag) rather than them being gross and married fucking perverts.

This needs to be pinned on the thread. What that man said was completely.unacceptable and drips misogyny. It implies that OP was dressing to get male attention and in particular the attention of the men having that conversation. It's vile to think they would discuss their female colleagues appearance like that and makes you wonder what else they have said about other female colleagues.

NetZeroZealot · 03/10/2025 20:16

I don’t think leggings are appropriate for any work event, casual dress code or not (unless it’s a corporate yoga retreat).
