Is this a reasonable amount of salad for one person for their evening meal?

Two celery stalks
One chicken breast
Five baby potatoes
Half a red onion
Cucumber
Four small beetroot balls
One medium avocado
Watercress, rocket and spinach leaves
Chopped feta

With a dressing of anchovies, lemon juice, olive oil, mustard and honey.

YANBU - That’s definitely enough. On the large side, even.
YABU - That’s not enough.

It’s a lot of fuck all.

Explain?

It's got 2 servings of protein, a lot of good fat in the avocado, and lots of vitamins, minerals and fibre in the veg.

Oh yippee, another performative undereating thread.

Exactly. It's salad FFS. Even if it was a whole cucumber who cares! It's mainly water.

I don’t understand this attitude.
If someone wants to maintain a certain weight, surely they eat enough not to be too full and not to be too hungry ie satiated.
Whether that’s from 1500 or 2300 calories shouldn’t make a difference. If you feel satiated then job done - get on with other things.
Do I misunderstand?

Well, yes. Many people won’t maintain their weight by simply eating until they’re “not hungry” anymore.

some people might easily eat 2300 without feeling “overly full”. But their maintenance happens to be 1800..

But if the same food was served hot as in a large chicken breast, potatoes and vegetables, people would be saying how it was a 'big heavy meal' that was full of protein and keep them full for ages, even without the avocado.

Clearly you don't understand nutrition.

It's got a whole chicken breast and Feta- 2 portions of protein. I chicken breast can have almost 50-75% the protein we need in a day ( can be 30gms depending on size.)

Potatoes- carbs
Beetroot - carbs

Green veg- polyphenols, fibre, vitamins, minerals

Avocado- good source of Vits and good fats.

The ones I get are 700g ish, I know this because DS requests 700g+ packs for his meal prep 🙄

Also... I wonder if our avo's are bigger too? I certainly couldn't imagine eating one whole avocado in a salad full of other stuff.

I buy the Coles I'mperfect avos, which are teeny tiny but quite cheap.

HoppingPavlova · 03/10/2025 10:15

@Cherrytree86 poor chicken probably injected with steroid to make them that that big

Nope, that’s illegal here so that doesn’t explain it. I’m certain you MUST have pigeons disguised in chicken suits🤣. It is also appearing that you have dwarf avo’s if someone could eat 1 in a salad by themselves as no way you could do that with the average avo here that you buy as a single avo. Sometimes there are bags of little ones going cheap but that’s because they are not normal size😁, which I’m suspecting may be your ‘normal’?

SalamiSammich · 02/10/2025 21:30

It's not really a salad is it? It's 3x protein portions and little more than 5 veg.

How is it not a salad - it has leaves in it?

whatevenwasthat · 03/10/2025 10:19

God I fucking hate salad. All the food and still so boring.

childofthe607080s · 03/10/2025 10:21

If you find such a diversity of taste and texture boring I guess you are just a boring person

That's a bit harsh. There is a reason why restaurants always put the salads at the end of the list, or in the side dishes.

Cherrytree86 · 03/10/2025 10:26

Also, half an onion…your breath must stink after that

You didn't say if this ' salad ' was for a woman or a man, or a child and what age of child.

You don't say what else may have been eaten that day, nor if the person will eat again i.e. was this ' salad ' for lunch or dinner.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 03/10/2025 10:27

LivingTheLife1 · 03/10/2025 08:45

It is illegal in Australia to give chickens steroids. I imagine we just have different breeds in use maybe?

Good to know. Thanks for the info!

antibiotics are still widely used to promote growth (although that has become less popular). But you are absolutely right about breed being a consideration as well. Broilers will grow much faster than smaller breeds.

BabyCat2020z · 03/10/2025 10:28

Perfect, seems healthy! You can't really have too much salad anyway. One avocado fine unless you are doing it everyday then could be a bit too much fat, but maybe not as everything else low fat.

FurForksSake · 03/10/2025 10:28

Salad is such a fucking broad church if you find it boring you haven’t tried hard enough! Low on the leaves, high on variety and add hot proteins and crispy stuff and a good dressing and they can be fabulous. But also, don’t throw everything at it, you need a balance of flavours for them to really work.

An interesting leaf, finely chopped onions / peppers / cucumber / tomatoes / celery and then hot crispy potatoes and a protein of choice with a dressing is delicious. The prep of the veg makes a huge difference too. I like things chopped quite small as I find you then get a bit of everything in each bite

AhBiscuits · 03/10/2025 10:29

There is a tendency for people to think salad is low calories so you can never have too much, even when that is obviously not true at all.

As a pp said, if this meal was hot, far fewer people would be saying it isn't a big meal. Maybe a roasted chicken breast with the cheese melted over it, new potatoes, then all the veg listed, including an entire avocado and dressing. It's bloody loads.

AllyCart · 03/10/2025 10:31

I'm surprised some people are picking up on the salad vegetables as being too much.

We're told we should aim for 7 portions of fruit/veg per day and each portion is 80g, so even 2 full sticks of celery may not be 1 of your 7.

I think the meal sounds great but would maybe lose some of the avocado myself as I think it may be too filling with everything else.

clipboardz · 02/10/2025 21:26

I'd eat that over a week

Of course you would, classic Mumsnet response when it comes to food portions, heaven forbid anyone have more than a morsel of lettuce per day.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 03/10/2025 10:54

Sounds like a normal dinner or two lunches to me. Also sounds delicious!

insomniacalways · 03/10/2025 11:09

Sounds good - I'd chuck in some walnuts too! But can never bring myself to use a whole avocado - due to price!

NoNameNoOne · 03/10/2025 11:10

It's fine. Ignore the competitive undereaters x

JunoYouKnow · 03/10/2025 11:15

I'm the only avocado eater in my house and I love it so I always eat a whole one - once you've cut it, it goes brown and doesn't keep so I'd have to throw some away otherwise which would be such a waste.

Alwaysinamood · 03/10/2025 11:20

This looks great, and the more plant foods you have the more nutrients and nourishment you are providing. It’s all good food and a balanced meal. Ignore everyone else they probably eat frozen chicken nuggets for dinner!

KmcK87 · 03/10/2025 11:20

Perfect amount of food imo, sub the avo for some coleslaw and that’s one of my favourite dinners. Hope you slathered the potatoes in butter too.
