Is this a reasonable amount of salad for one person for their evening meal?

Two celery stalks
One chicken breast
Five baby potatoes
Half a red onion
Cucumber
Four small beetroot balls
One medium avocado
Watercress, rocket and spinach leaves
Chopped feta

With a dressing of anchovies, lemon juice, olive oil, mustard and honey.

YANBU - That’s definitely enough. On the large side, even.
YABU - That’s not enough.

I don’t understand this attitude.
If someone wants to maintain a certain weight, surely they eat enough not to be too full and not to be too hungry ie satiated.
Whether that’s from 1500 or 2300 calories shouldn’t make a difference. If you feel satiated then job done - get on with other things.
Do I misunderstand?

Of course it makes a difference how many calories you eat. A medium height, 10 stone woman with a desk job would put weight on if she ate 2300 calories every day, especially if she’s in her 50s or older.

Pure gluttony. One lettuce leaf is enough for me for a month.

😂

Did this person have Pizza Hut buffet for lunch?

😂

To me that's enough for about two-3 people. At least! If you added another chicken breast it would feed about six!

Dinnertime sounds fucking miserable in your house 😂

I buy the Coles I'mperfect avos, which are teeny tiny but quite cheap.

Oh yeah they are little and cute aren't they! But... how imperfect are they? A little bit imperfect? Or a lot imperfect? I have bought other I'mperfect things which have been fine, but just a bit dubious about the avos lol

Is this what you are or are you judging someone else ?

How much you or anyone should eat is based on what their body needs. I sit at a desk all day, I’d eat that and probably not need snacks in between my evening meal. I prefer to eat larger meals in the early part of the day and lighter at night.

last night my evening meal was one regular size pork sausage, half a cup of mash, 1 Yorkshire pudding the size of my palm and two generous soup spoon full helpings of gravy over it.

I only eat two meals a day. Not because of poverty or anything just because I’m busy and I’m not a breakfast person.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 03/10/2025 11:53

Couldn't possibly tell you as know idea what else you've eaten or how much activity you've performed during the day. It's a bit of a silly question really. Sorry.

I'm the only avocado eater in my house and I love it so I always eat a whole one - once you've cut it, it goes brown and doesn't keep so I'd have to throw some away otherwise which would be such a waste.

Sprinkle lemon or lime juice on the cut part and put it in an airtight tub, it's fine for a day or two.

shortieshortie · 03/10/2025 12:12

It's not really a salad anyway.

It's a chicken breast, feta cheese and potatoes, which some salad as a 'side'.

'Salad' is really just the vegetables on their own.

We never eat 'salad'.

We may have quiche, salmon fillets, chicken, prawns, fish cakes, kebabs etc etc WITH a side salad.

Amusing how OP calls her meal a 'salad' when it 's not.

JudgeJ · 03/10/2025 12:16

InMyOpenOnion · 02/10/2025 21:34

I would probably drop the avocado but otherwise I would eat that for dinner.

I agree, save half of the avocado for a bacon butty next morning! A whole chicken breast seems to be a lot though.

The whole cucumber? Overall maybe, depends how much exercise I have done that day I think

This sounds like you'd need to increase your exercise significantly to counteract the calories in one whole cucumber. Love it 😁

OP it sounds great. Good healthy food.

boobot1 · 03/10/2025 12:25

Need more potatoes.

Citrusbergamia · 03/10/2025 12:34

I'd say that all sounds fine OP. I have the same pretty much, other than no celery stalks and maybe only half the avo. I'd add in some tomatoes too.

What are you on 😆

Of course it's a salad, with a variety of components.

So a chicken caesar salad is not a salad. It's chicken and bread with a side salad.

Sounds ok, remember celery and cucumber are mainly water anyway.

henlake7 · 03/10/2025 12:38

That sounds really good OP. (somebody above seems to be confused between a side salad and a main meal salad!).
Good mix of protein, fats and fibre. My only comment would be if you are wanting to lose weight then go for half the avo and no feta and big up the veggies.
IMO if its a main meal salad then I basically want a mixing bowl worth of food!!😁

pinkspeakers · 03/10/2025 12:56

A whole avocado and a whole chicken breast seems quite a lot to me.

JHound · 03/10/2025 13:00

MartinAynuss · 02/10/2025 21:28

That does sound massive. I couldn't possibly eat all that in one sitting, it would last me for at least a month

😁

Would probably last me a month.

incognitomouse · 03/10/2025 13:00

Depends on the size of the chicken breast doesn't it? Sometimes they are piddly and sometimes they are bloody massive.

No, it's a chicken breast and potatoes, with a salad.

The way meals are described is to list the main ingredient as the 'main' one.

Just as you have done with the Chicken Caesar salad. The main protein is chicken.

If someone said to me they were having a salad for dinner, I'd assume it was everything on the OP's list, minus the chicken, feta cheese and anchovies.

A traditional 'Caesar Salad' does not have chicken. The chicken was an option that evolved as an extra, which is why it's the first word in the description. You will find Caesar Salad on the menu and also 'Add chicken' next to it in some restaurants. Which proves the point that a traditional Caesar salad is just that- lettuce, croutons, parmesan cheese , and dressing.

You must be fun at parties @shortieshortie 😅 Get a grip.

In case you need help understanding it.

LivingTheLife1 · 03/10/2025 00:14

Look at how much they weigh. A serving is about 125g. A chicken breast is typically more than that. I would use one whole breast to make a curry or something for three adults - two of them hungry men.

Edited

If they are full on 1/3 chicken breast they aren't hungry men. A UK chicken breast is 150-160g. 50g of chicken is not satisfying any 7ft tall strapping rugby player (as all the men on MN being fed are)

As someone else pointed out above, the chicken breasts in Australia are huge, just like I said. I'd love to get 120g chicken breasts. That would be perfect for making individual portions easily

Arrhhh, yes. I answered half a chicken breast as I was agog at a whole one, but I did so on the basis of a chicken breast being approx 250g. I’m in Australia and this is standard. We allow 4 breasts to feed 8 but that’s working on the basis 4 breasts are approx 1kg so gives everyone 125g a serve.

Don't want to derail thread, but cant be arsed starting a new one. Why are the chickens in the UK so small? I only buy truly free range (not what they claim passes for free range, which I don’t believe does), but I notice here, there is no difference in size between free range and the unfortunate intensively farmed ones, so our Aus vs UK size difference can’t be due to that, so what is it?

ETA - I’m now sitting here imagining your chickens being the size of our pigeons 🤣

Edited

I think UK chicken breasts are trimmed much smaller, cut differently, its certainly not ALL of the meat you could cut off the front end of a chicken... Unless aussie chickens are just much bigger than our UK ones?

HangingOver · 03/10/2025 13:38

Needs crusty bread 😊
