Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

As opposed to......

A fair point, but some beliefs are more out there than others.

pointythings · 29/09/2025 18:22

Show me the Bible verses where it specifically says that meat prayed over under Islam cannot be eaten by Christians...

Acts 15:29, potentially.

Doesn’t specifically mention Islam as Islam hadn’t been invented yet.

You seem convinced that somebody is trying to make us adopt religious practices.

What are these practices?

Eating hot cross buns?

Chocolate eggs?

The report warned of a wider cultural problem of "self-appointed community faith leaders aggressively interfering in teaching" at some Batley schools

Uggbootsforever · 29/09/2025 18:46

Does that work in reverse? Why are some people bothered if the meat isn’t halal?

What about halal meat bothers you?

Uggbootsforever · 29/09/2025 18:52

TicklishReader · 29/09/2025 18:52

What about halal meat bothers you?

The method of slaughter. The lengths gone to to appease one minority religion over the sensibilities of wider society. The idea that we must adopt religious practises to please other people.

Some more than others.

Thanks. Yes I should have caveated that with some men.

Just because the excesses of behaviour are not exactly to the letter the same that does not make them any less bad. Why is child marriage OK in Louisiana but not in Afghanistan? In my book theyre equally abhorrent. Why do you feel differently?

Child marriage anywhere is to be abhorred but law in six states in America which allows marriages below the age of 16 is a secular one as there is a clear separation between church and state. There is also movement to stop this in all states. The direction in Islamic countries is going the other way. Even in the UK there are Sharia courts operating a shadow legislative system that includes at least one that was trying to marry a child of 12.

Shegotanology · 29/09/2025 18:53

Animal slaughter is disgusting, full stop.

The number of posts thinking we should adopt certain religious practises ‘because it would mean something to them and nothing to you’ is alarming.

My very corporate, middle class London workplace started to encourage employees to join in with the fasting during Ramadan, to show solidarity......or something (this was written in an educational email sent to everyone about the religious holiday).

When I was in a small team meeting during this time, my overworked colleague was eating her sandwich and a non-Muslim, very woke colleague sort of recoiled a little and went 'Oh no.....you're not eating are you? Are you not joining in with the fasting?', hinting that it was inconsiderate of her to carry on as she normally would during this time. Clearly she thought it was appropriate to police our behaviour according to these new religious rules. Twat.

I've never joined with Lent fasting, and there's no fucking way I'm starting to partake in religious practices at a workplace like this. I consider it a serious overstepping of boundaries and the equivalent or as bizarre as someone expecting me to do the Rosary in solidarity.

It should be noted that no one has encouraged people to fast for Lent.

Yes we also get the ‘beware of Islamic sensibilities’ emails despite the fact we have more Sikh employees and never hear a word about them.

Some verses:

From the bible:

Book of 1 Samuel, when God instructs King Saul to attack the Amalekites: "And utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them," God says through the prophet Samuel. "But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey."

Exodus 21:15: "Whoever strikes his father or his mother shall be put to death".

Exodus 21:17: "Whoever curses his father or his mother shall be put to death".

Numbers 31:17-18
Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. But all the young girls who have not known man by lying with him keep alive for yourselves.

pointythings · 29/09/2025 18:59

HansHolbein · 29/09/2025 18:51

Acts 15:29, potentially.

Doesn’t specifically mention Islam as Islam hadn’t been invented yet.

That's a reach though - it refers to food offered to idols and to animals which have been strangled. Far more likely to be referring to not eating food that has been offered as a ritual sacrifice in a specific religious site, i.e. like not eating the burnt offerings in a temple to Zeus. I think stretching that to meat produced in commercial slaughterhouses is an interpretation too far. Though convenient to those who disapprove of halal slaughter, obviously.

The point about Islam is of course completely fair and I was fully aware of that. It does lead me back to the question why people on here are so irate about halal slaughter but seem fine with the kosher method, which is identical.

The animals are stunned and then killed. There isn't much difference between halal and non-halal slaughter in terms of cruelty.

When was the last time Christians actually carried those out en masse?

I have a problem with kosher slaughter, yes. But have yet to see a mainstream fast food chain only offer kosher meat, or a council school.

Why do you vociferously complain about humane slaughter plus prayer?

If you think that there is a clear separation between church and state in the present day US in anything but name, you're really naive. Read up on Project 2025.

There are people who call themselves Christians who are arguing that women should not have the vote, or should have their vote decided by their husbands...

Child marriage = marrige under 18. Which is legal in 34 states of the US, not 6. And that is abhorrent.

Food that has been slaughtered as part of a specific religious ritual and pray over to a false god is very definitely ‘offered to idols’.

PigletJohn · 29/09/2025 19:03

Why do you vociferously complain about humane slaughter plus prayer?

Because it’s not humane. Slitting an animal’s throat, whether stunned or not, is utterly grotesque. If vets decided tomorrow to euthanise animals this way, we would think they were gratuitous psychopaths. What is this any difference?

Define 'false god'. Firstly, the Christian god and the Muslim god are one and the same.

Secondly, all gods are false gods to someone who believes in a different one, and nobody has thus far been able to prove that any of them are true.

Actually, it bans black pudding.

Nobody has offered my meat pie to an idol.

The way I see if you're not religious then why does it bother you if meat was killed in an islamic way.

If you're a Sikh there's directly a prohibition against kosher and halal meat. If you're a "bog standard" non religious person why does it bother you? If you care about animal cruelty don't eat meat.

PigletJohn · 29/09/2025 19:10

You state all gods are false gods to someone who believes in a different one yet you seem to think Muslims should be allowed force their beliefs on others even though you recognise their god is a false god to someone who believes in a different one.

When vets euthanise pets, they do not expect the pets to be eaten - therefore chemical methods can be used. That doesn't work in the food chain for humans.

When you're eating an animal and it has been stunned, the method of killing actually matters very little. Cutting the jugular, carotid and windpipe is no worse than using a captive bolt. And both can go wrong. If the killing method does matter to you, you should choose to be a vegetarian.

Blood isn't grotesque or horrific. It's just blood. People live such sanitised lives these days that they're shocked by it for some reason.
