To want a coffee shop with a no children policy

Amiterriblex3 · 28/09/2025 11:51

In a coffee shop and have to listen to a bunch of 2 year old screaming, absolutely screaming at the top of his lungs. Their mothers might be immune to such noise but I am not. I would be embarrassed if my child screamed like that

OP posts:

And a no phone calls policy please.

And no dogs, crocodiles or giraffes please.

SparkyBlue · 28/09/2025 14:30

There is a coffee shop close (ish ) to me which has a strict no children policy. It’s there a good while now and seems very popular. When my last DC started preschool DH was off work so it was the first place we went to and it was lovely

Goldbar · 28/09/2025 14:32

I agree with you to an extent, OP. The answer, paradoxically, is more child-friendly spaces so parents with small children use those instead. So more "play cafe" type places with a small play area but not costing the earth or requiring pre-booking for a 2 hour session. It's a shame some of the big chains couldn't get in on this and designate some of their cafes "family cafes" with small play zones. Then all the parents with toddlers would congregate there and all those who would prefer not to be around child noise could go elsewhere.

I suspect the issue is viability - soft plays and play cafes aren't very profitable and other cafes don't want to alienate potential customers.

Would you prefer to live in a society where the majority of coffee shops have a no child policy or one where there are occasional kids screaming in coffee shops?

Unreservedly, the former. But it wouldn't have to be a majority of coffee shops; just some would be fine.

Why do people always bring up dogs on threads about children? They’re not remotely the same. Apparently.

Apparently.

Definitely. Children are people they are not owned by their parents and they will grow into adults.

A dog will always just be an animal. They are often in cafes with their high pitched barking or slobbering everywhere and yes everyone will come in to say ‘not my dog’ well not everyone’s child either.

No one would want my dog in a cafe that’s for sure he would steal everyone food, nothing would stop him. Then, because he is allergic to everything he would let off a fart so odious they would probably have to evacuate.

JenniferBooth · 28/09/2025 14:39

Screaming wouldnt bother me usually apart from right now when i have an ear infection.
Its the running around when hot drinks and food are being served. One young child ran right across in front of me while i was carrying a latte. Its bloody dangerous FFS

And no dogs, crocodiles or giraffes please.

That is very giraffe-ist of you.

Fair enough about the crocodiles.

Crushed23 · 28/09/2025 14:45

Even if you opened a quiet coffee shop you would still get loud people in there.

I was at a spa on Monday where there were “quiet please” and “no phones” signs everywhere, and the staff explain the expectation of low voices etc when you check in. I had to ask two separate groups of people to be quiet over the course of my ‘relaxing’ spa day because they were talking very loudly (one group was doing this actually inside one of the saunas where it is basic etiquette to be completely silent!).

The world is full of loud people who either lack self-awareness or don’t give a damn, I’m afraid.

Really don’t understand why you would choose to post about wanting child free spaces on a parenting forum?

Because even here there are some responsible parents. Maybe the original post would have been better had it said 'no unsupervised, free-range children', I'm sure that those parents who take care and notice of their children are as fed up as everyone else of the negligent, couldn't care less parents.

And I doubt that its breeder would offer to replace the latte had it landed on their sprog's head.

I bet the parents wish it was a No Children café too and they can tie their kids to a post outside.

I mean..... is that an option? I could find a very nice post and leave a few snacks......

Peachy2005 · 28/09/2025 14:50

How about a finding a pub with a decent coffee machine? There would probably be fewer children.

Goditsmemargaret · 28/09/2025 14:53

Yes please OP, in Ireland ideally (where I am). I don't understand why no-children restaurants get such a hard time, they are a brilliant idea.

MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned · 28/09/2025 14:56

I have absolutely no objection to the idea of a child free cafe. I think the commercial issue would be that it would be very popular at the weekend but would struggle in the week, when people with little children are often a big percentage of the clientele, and I'm not sure you could persuade parents to go to a cafe in the week that then bans them at peak times. It might work ok if situated somewhere that they'd get a lot of custom from people at work nearby during the week.

pontipinemum · 28/09/2025 14:57

I think a no children cafe would be lovely, I have 2 young children. this 'absolutely screaming at the top of his lungs.'

That is just not acceptable in a public place. My older son just turned 3. I have removed him from places before. Once in B&Q when he was absolutely losing his rag. A fabulous staff member came over and helped me take the basket off him (in a very helpful/ understanding way) I got him into the car and we went home. No cafe which was next door and had been promised.

In cafe's he has possibly annoyed people with 'general noise' I'm not sure but there is no way I would allow him scream

The Old Barracks Café in Birdhill, Tipp, is child-free, if you're anywhere near?

pontipinemum · 28/09/2025 15:00

@MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned my boys have just turned 3 and 1. I really wouldn't take it personally. But maybe that is because if I ever had the chance it would be nice to meet a friend alone in a child free zone that isn't a pub.

RoyalBumWiper · 28/09/2025 15:01

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 28/09/2025 11:57

I mean if we go down this road we could all ban things we don’t like eg loud telephone conversations, loud in person conversations , people sitting on laptops, business meetings, etc

Or is this one of those posts trying to make out children are some how equivalent to dogs? Having read a post wanting dog free cafes?

Silly post
End of the day, it's supply and demand- people will vote with their feet; I'd visit a child-free cafe and I have kids.
Maybe you wouldn't but we don't have to structure everything around you.
Every single thing does not have to be for every single person every time

phoenixrosehere · 28/09/2025 15:02

Neemie · 28/09/2025 14:10

Most kids are fine though. You wouldn’t suggest banning all adults because there always seems to be at least one in every cafe who puts their phone on speaker to have a loud conversation or has a teams meetings without headphones. Certain cafes have a more child friendly vibe and they encourage the more lax parents so I avoid them in the same way as I avoid rowdier pubs

Same. I walk to my local Starbucks and head there around 6:30 pm and stay til close, 8:30pm. It is pretty quiet for that entire time.

Most cafes near me shut at 5:30 and when I have gone it’s loud mainly due to the loud talkers so I stick to the Starbucks. Plus, they don’t charge me for oat milk.

I'm not but I am going to make it my business to get there in the next year and give them a massive shout-out.

Get a coffee machine!

You don’t get the feeling of being connected to the community and supporting a local business with a coffee machine though.

It's a long way to Tipperary, a long way to go.... but I might for a quiet, nice cafe!

Puregoldy · 28/09/2025 15:11

One of these exists near me. I think it’s a deli too. I’ve never been in it as normally have children in tow. Only over 12s welcome… not sure about dogs though!

DBD1975 · 28/09/2025 15:13

Totally agree OP, why do people let their children scream and not do anything to try and stop them?

Kids make a noise and I can accept that but the screaming at the top of their lungs whilst parents ignore is very annoying
