Would love to hear from any MNetters across the pond as to the reality of the situation there, is it a "war zone" and how you feel about the situation.

Oh, even better news Portland Police have started unmasking the Antifa terrorists - so glad for the people of Portland that their president is doing precisely what they want him to do and restoring order to Portland.

"Portland police shut down the Antifa attack on the north precinct by rushing out and making surprise arrests. The Antifa members are shocked because this was a police station they regularly attacked and set on fire in 2020 with impunity."

"Portland nights are no longer safe for chaos. Federal agents are cracking down hard on Antifa dragging militants away like luggage. This is what accountability looks like!"

"Portland Police arrested an antifa black bloc militant in north Portland. They yank off her black mask. #PortlandRiots"

fantastic, well done Portland Police.

Just thousands of reports from people in Portland, so happy to have law and order reinstated.

Why are you posting tweets and images from 2020 and 2024, as if they're recent?

ThatDreamyLemonBiscuit · 30/09/2025 03:26

One biased poll?

Ddraig is referencing that he has historically low polling averages accross all polls.

Not as low as it should be, for a despotic, lawless paedophile who is fucking up the US economy and has irreversibly damaged its standing in the world, but there we go.

A person who will lie about the most basic human truth - men are not women, cannot be women, do not turn into women and do not belong in women's single sex places - cannot be trusted not to lie about anything else at all.

Of course the religion of transology has drastically affected hundreds of thousands of women and girls in the west who have been assaulted in women's prisons by men who should not have been there, had their trophies and sporting accomplishments and sporting careers stolen from them by men, punched in the face by a boxer who pretended to be a woman, been forced to put up with the worst of men (only predatory men try to barge into sex segregated spaces for women) in toilets, changing rooms and more, have had to have men groping and assaulting them during medical exams.

Women have been arrested (in Spain recently and also in Australia) for saying men are not women and little girls in many schools are refusing to drink water because they are being forced to share toilets with boys and are afraid to do so.

As you know, all of these things have happened and continue to happen.

But although pretending men can become women has indeed caused deep distress and physical harm to countless women and girls - the main problem is that a person who will lie about this basic reality cannot ever be trusted to tell the truth about anything.

And in the rare case that a person is so deranged they actually believe that men magically become women when they say so, that person is - of course - far too unstable to be trusted.

You might be surprised to know that I agree with you on what constitutes the basic human truth.

I disagree with you on the topic of the hierarchy of lies and the centrality of the issue when it comes to picking a candidate to vote for.

I'll stick with what I think was the late Pope's meaning on that score.

In the wider context (socio-economic equity/ healthcare availability and accessibility/ educational availability and accessibility/ policy toward workers' rights/ foreign policy/ foreign aid /the welfare of women and children globally and domestically) there is simply no way the GOP as currently constituted is trustworthy.

There are sinister and profoundly undemocratic and even ideologically antidemocratic forces at work in the administration. The deployment of a uniformed, heavily armed and masked military force on the streets of an American city on a sunny weekend day is something you can try to explain away as much as you like, but I'm not buying whatever garbage you come up with.

Once again, using one biased poll doesn't reflect the fact that Trump was voted in to do precisely what he is doing, and Americans as a whole are absolutely delighted about that. I guess we'll see how reliable that poll is when the vice president stands for presidency in a few years.

Americans wanted this, Americans are happy he is restoring order to Portland.

I'm really not sure where you're getting that idea from. Oh, right, yes I am. X. Meanwhile, in the real world

From what I've seen on social media, Portland residents going about their Saturday business, jogging, visiting a local hippy market etc, and expressing good humoured bewilderment at being portrayed as living in a Gotham adjacent environment, it's difficult to envision what is going on that merits military action.

Surely if they did feel under threat they would be welcoming the initiative with open arms.

I know everything these days is "curated" etc but I have also seen videos of ICE agents physically restraining women and throwing a couple on the floor when they have yes, been vocal about the situation but not physically aggressive. I've also seen these agents pointing their weapons at people filming very aggressive detentions.

These days I am very confused as to what constitutes truth or reality. It's as if we live in two co-existing realities, the one we see through the lens of media in all its forms, aandlived experience, and they are constantly flip flopping across the line of - well, reality.

I have little idea of what to believe any more, about pretty much anything.

So I've pretty much withdrawn from "life" except in terms of necessity. I wonder how many others are just quietly observing from their own little bubble without engaging because they don't want to be part of the problem.

And of course, this is how control is achieved, and how injustice flourishes. I'm buggered if I know how to live anymore....

Yes, entirely.
I have been a political person all my life but I am starting to withdraw in bewilderment and focus on my little bubble too.
I don’t want to but I feel powerless and trying to engage in the madness, polarisation and distortion of today is making me feel quite ill.
I honestly don’t know what can be done and I fear for us all.

I really feel you x

I'm not an expert on anything, but I live by the idea that all killing is wrong, injustice must be addressed, things like wealth and opportunity inequality are out of hand, and currently the world we live in seeks to justify all those things, according to tribal division.

Given the lessons of history one would hope that we'd mived a bit further in terms of understanding and be trying something different.

The sense I get is that some people positively thrive on the fear and conflict, and especially online the vitriol is at a level I don't recall seeing previously. I know it's algorithm driven, what we see, and is supposed to be based on what we look at, but I also think it's agenda driven. People seem to have forgotten about Cambridge Analytica, yet this was a few years ago now, and the manipulation skills have been constantly honed since then, because money mainly, obviously.
(Don't get me started on AI, we'll be here all day).

I'm on a thread discussing the proposed peace deal for Gaza. Given Trumps track record, I don't think it's in the least bit unreasonable to have doubts or uneasiness around this process. Obviously peace in Gaza is extremely desirable for both sides and the wider world, but can Trump broker it successfully? It's a waiting game.

But on that thread are people screaming that the discussion is rooted in anti-semitism and bigotry. When it's more about whether the proposed deal will be accepted by all sides, and whether the proposed new regime will achieve its aims. That's picking holes apparently, and "at least Trump's doing something".

So i give up, honestly. The only side I'm on is "world peace", naive little woman that I apparently am.

I get so fed up with the assumption that having a certain view on one issue must therefore mean that you agree with all these others views which coincide with one “side” or the other.

I am quite capable of holding a range of views on different topics and of also seeing the concerns which drive those who hold opposing views and of being able to disagree without demonising them.

I used to think the majority of people were the same and that we are only hearing from the vociferous minority who want drama and division for whatever purpose.

Now I’m not so sure because more and more people seem to be being radicalised in either direction.

certainlycertain · 30/09/2025 10:49

@MistressoftheDarkSide

I don't know if you're familiar with The Bulwark. It's an (American) independent media company founded by former Republican political operatives, and their substack and YouTube channel is some of the best political commentary/analysis there is. It's serious but funny, realistic but optimistic and, most of all, nuanced. It gives you the sense there are still smart, open-minded people out there thinking and talking about what's happening. I'm pretty left, so there's some stuff I don't agree with them on, but that's policy, not world view, which I'm fine with.

Honestly, they've been a real sanity saver over the past year. I also like Pivot, the podcast from Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway for amusing yet serious musings on politics and all things tech/AI.

If you want to follow Trump's speeches/announcements, I can recommend Aaron Rupar.

His video clips come with subtitles so you can turn off the sound.

I had a look, there was one recent tweet among them, but of course no way to verify when or where the video was filmed, or even who was involved (wouldn't surprise me if it was ICE thugs).

The poster's writing style rather reminds me of the Nigerians who were all over Facebook in 2022, proclaiming their love for Putin.

Wikipage for Andy Ngo

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Ngo
Ngo's coverage of antifa and Muslims has been controversial, and the accuracy and credibility of his reporting have been disputed by journalists. He has been accused of sharing misleading or selective material, and has been described as a provocateur.

All the images are from the 2020 Portland protests. MAGA types are posting then widely and pretending they're from the last couple of days.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 30/09/2025 22:29

Honestly if I was any of those generals I think I'd be furious at the tone and insults.

Also given the purpose of the second amendment, it's hard to believe Trump isn't trying to foment civil unrest.

Insane, demented, embarrassing ramblings

StandFirm · 01/10/2025 10:08

It's worse than embarrassing. The statement about a 'war from within' will force those generals into a terrible dilemma. They swore allegiance to the country and the constitution, not a specific president. They will have to wonder now who and what constitutes the actual threat within. Chilling.

Leavitt's press conference today

Leavitt: “The president has directed Secretary Hegseth to provide all necessary troops to protect war-ravaged Portland and any ICE facilities under siege from attack by Antifa and other left-wing domestic terrorists.”

Leavitt: “[Trump] has directed his team here at the White House to begin reviewing aid that can potentially be cut in Portland. We will not fund states that allow anarchy.”

Trump told NBC on Sunday that he saw some Portland riot footage on Fox and thought it reflected current events.

It didn't. It was 5 years old, from the George Floyd aftermath.

And we learned that due to the diligence of a local TV reporter, who got the transcript.
