Violet Affleck is clearly warning parents about the affect of Covid on children, so when will our children get finally get air filters in their schools/nurseries?

I genuinely can't believe that the government/department for education are able to continue to ignore the now overwhelming, crystal clear evidence that Covid harms children's health. Violet Affleck gave a powerful, well documented, speech at the UN this week laying it all out and the media response? Accuse her of 'health anxiety'!
Other countries are taking action on indoor air quality to protect children in learning environments (e.g. France, Belgium, Germany, Thailand, Australia).
Bridget Philipson herself was shouting about ventilation and air filters before the election.
But still, nothing!
The department for education also had THEIR buildings upgraded so they have great indoor air quality, as did the Houses of Parliament, as do many private schools, as do DAVOS when the world leaders meet.
ALL of our children deserve clean air and to be safe in the classrooms/nurseries.
Why are we so bad at protecting our kids? Repeated Covid infections are ruining their health. ONS said in 2024 that we had over 111,000 children with long covid in Scotland and England alone.
It is SO simple to achieve this. The fact that we are doing nothing is shameful. Open the windows, get air filters, use a CO2 monitor to monitor the air. THAT IS IT. Why is that hard?

Do you look both ways before crossing?

Cook your food properly?

Yes, but I dont wear a crash helmet everywhere I go (for example).

Well I’ve got PTSD from long COVID.

It’s been terrifying.

I’m so sorry for what you’ve been and what you’re going through.

Change will come. And I really hope that you feel some improvements soon.

Im sure it is, along with the terror experienced by people who suffer dementia, cancer, developing blindness. My parents are currently extremely ill with a number of conditions, very frightening.

My dad went deaf after his covid vaccination as well, that was also frightening.

But you said it’s not frightening.

Well LC is

Yes, but I dont wear a crash helmet everywhere I go (for example).

So you accept some protections.

Protections that don’t have to impact on all areas of your life. Obviously wearing a crash helmet all the time would be silly and unnecessary. But in the right high risk environment it makes sense.

People are trying to raise awareness about protections against covid. Not because they’re spending their whole lives scared of covid (although sadly some peoples lives have been hijacked by covid through no fault of their own - they deserve our support, not least because it could be us or a loved one one day).

These protections don’t have to impact on your whole life. HEPA air filters can literally just sit in the room un-noticed.

My Grandma used to say “I just hold it across me” re seatbelts. It takes time to adjust. Progress doesn't have a switch. But it does and it will happen.

Yes I do accept some protections if the risk/reward makes sense.

Thats not true of all protections.

Newbutoldfather · 27/09/2025 17:43

You can’t turn schools into sterile environments! And, even if you did, there are the holidays and weekends.

You might delay infection, but you won’t stop it. And, we are adapted to deal with pathogens. There is very strong evidence that the rise of allergies is directly related to people being over hygienic when their immune systems are developing.

DareMe · 27/09/2025 17:44

The terrible diet many parents keep stuffing their kids with is doing far more harm to children’s health than Covid ever has or will.

I see your reply as progress! Off to dish up tea now, but wish you the best.

I don’t blame anyone here, it’s so frustrating to see people manipulated into accepting shoddiness while the rich get richer though.

It'd be great if there was budget for better ventilation in schools and many other public buildings - among many other things.

Not sure this kind of thing is doing much to promote that or the UN.

You need to educate yourself. Covid behaves in a far different way to colds. We hoped it would just be another cold. I thought the same a few years ago when I caught it for the second time and was just a bit tired for a week.

Colds can cause post-viral fatigue. They can also lead to post-viral syndrome and other conditions caused by a prolonged reaction to an infection.

I get why people dismissing Covid as 'just a cold' is frustrating when it can be life-altering, but all viruses, really any infection, have the possibility to result in devastating, sometimes lifelong and life limiting impacts. Covid is one of many viruses that have their post-viral syndrome have a specific name, and one of many where there is scientific debate on whether that helps either in understanding or in support people impacted.

However, Covid has a much higher rate of post viral illness

But you said it’s not frightening.

Well LC is

The thought of covid and catching it, is not frightening. Having a serious illness obviously is.

'covid' is not frightening any more than 'random virus that I dont even know the name of'

I have life long symptoms from a virus. I am pissed off about that, Ive needed operations on my sinuses, its affected by job. But thats life, I could have easily have been run over or fallen down a pot hole and become wheelchair bound.

Life is risky, its what life is. There are some mitigations to take sometimes, but not to the detriment of the normal functioning of society. Posters going on about seat belts and properly cooked foods are missing the point.

God almighty, absolutely this.

We live shit lives, sedentary, eating ourselves full of shit, ill educated, isolated, scrolling through technology, our children are subject to this and are actually and actively being harmed

Covid is no where near any of that.

Im sure they were. My menopause symptoms are quite frightening. I often wonder if Im experiencing psychosis or dementia

Does that mean menopause is 'frightening'?

No

After Covid I got HEPA filters for each room of our home . It’s really improved my dc lives

How?

Setenv · 27/09/2025 18:19

Some people think covid is bad enough that precautions are reasonable, like a seatbelt; some think it's trivial enough that precautions are laughable, like wearing a crash helmet to go for a walk.

Some of the difference is personality and risk-averseness but an awful lot is differences in how much people know about covid - ignorance is very much bliss there, I think.

Calliopespa · 27/09/2025 18:22

soupyspoon · 27/09/2025 17:25

Covid isnt a monster though and its not frightening.

Its unpleasant for many of us, and for a few it will be life affecting.

Like many other illnesses and conditions. Like car accidents, like running accidents, like choking or allergies, like household accidents, like various viruses that are floating around, like many other things.

Yes, but I was really meaning people pretend it's a monster in the sense that a monster is something that scares many but doesn't actually exist.

It does exist and it would seem that for some it can be impactful.

Just because it hasn't affected me personally isn't going to make me narrow-minded enough to say others are over-reacting.

That's exactly what I think.

The real issue is we don't know, the full understanding just isn't there yet.

Though the majority of parents try to avoid those things for their dc - and I'm not sure that's wrong.

As a society and a nation we are distinctly unhealthy. Hepa filters are not going to change that.

Our food and exercise and social culture needs to change hugely for improvements to our health and development. Wearing masks or being frightened of covid is not going to help any of that.

How?

Hugely improved their asthma and significantly reduced the amount of illnesses they got / passed to each other
