Are all of us foreigners just going to be told to pack up and leave if Reform win?

1000 replies

Onegingerhead · 26/09/2025 16:03

I might be totally unreasonable here (or not), but please hear me out.
(Bloody) foreigner here — I’ve lived in the UK since 2001. Built my whole life here: house, husband, DC, the lot. Worked the whole time in a field that requires the highest level of qualification.
I’m getting increasingly worried about the talk of Reform winning in 2029. Some even say it could be sooner if Labour are pushed into early elections. This week (as we all heard) our beloved Reform suggested rescinding ILR or even settled status from Europeans. God knows what else they’ll come up with, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they went after naturalised Brits next and started revoking citizenship, just to please the voters.
I know a lot of foreign-born women — some married to born-and-bred Brits, some to other Europeans (not always from the same country), some to men from overseas. All sorts of combinations.
So what do you think lies ahead for us? Will we be politely asked to leave, or will things just get so hostile that we’re pushed out anyway? And how likely is it that people who aren’t very white, or who have an accent, will face more discrimination in work?
I’m meeting my foreign friends tonight and we’ll be talking about it. For most of us, moving now would be incredibly difficult. We’re late 30s to early 50s, and starting over in a new country isn’t exactly easy. Some of us are married to men from different countries entirely, and we don’t even speak each other’s languages well enough to get proper jobs there.

AIBU and should think we will actually be allowed to stay?
AINBU sorry but you’d better start planning your move now

Just because someone has a child born here, I don't think they should be granted the ability to live here indefinitely if not born here.

Why split up families? And end up with more damaged kids that the dismal mental health provisions here will fail?

Notonthestairs · 27/09/2025 19:57

Allthatshines1992 · 27/09/2025 19:53

No-one's deporting you if your child is British, relax.

They will deport people if they can not comply with the new requirements.

There were no carve outs for parents.

APTPT · 27/09/2025 19:57

Good grief. The fact that you imagine it was ever possible for a person on a spouse visa to claim any benefits..

I have Indefinite Leave to Remain which apparently, though it took more than five years and thousands of pounds to qualify for, means zip because your government and apparently voters don't bother with things like the truth, consistency or not moving the goalposts constantly when it is people's lives at stake. What about my husband, should he have the right to build a life in his own country with his wife of choice? Anyway. Moot point for us now. I am fortunate that my husband will be able to apply for permanent residency immediately in my home country, because unlike here my country's citizens have a right to marry whom they will and have a right to a family life.

Good luck with your country and your grand plans. I used to love it here.

Honestly. Anyone seen that Big Bang Theory episode where every time Howard or Sheldon says something dumb Raj activates the whiplash soundtrack?

I feel like activating an auto soundtrack that says 'READ THE FUCKING THREAD'.

With a side order of don't comment if you don't know what is being actually discussed or indeed have read/processed/understood what Farage said out of his own mouth.

noodlebugz · 27/09/2025 19:59

If they do - please can I come with you? I’m British but I’d no longer want to live in such a racist rathole.
I’m so disappointed with our current government. I know the world and economic circumstances are not easy and what they inherited wasn’t good but being a worse version of reform is just giving them and their rhetoric power, while letting most things crumble further. There’s nothing good to believe in!

Mjmum10 · 27/09/2025 17:56

The question is should they have had indefinite leave to remain in the first place. I agree with reforms stance. Politicians have to think what's best for the country as a whole.

Do I think 60k is a high threshold? Yes. And it shows reform means business. Reform have done the figures, they believe that they will save money by enforcing this policy, Zia Yousef explained this. They haven't pulled that number out of a hat. I don't think reform is perfect but they are a much better bet than the other options we have now. If things carry on, we will end up with a genuinely far right government. Because people are rightly so angry at the state of the country and unsustainable rate of immigration we have, especially illegal. I'd prefer reform, if they do what they say they will.

They WILL be a genuinely far right government.

Some people used that line in 1930s Germany. Just so you're aware.

Also the line that their family had been full citizens for generations. It did not protect the Jews. Sorry to feed anxieties, but it is important to be aware of recent history. Things can turn unexpectedly nasty.

Of course I give a fuck about women. I have a daughter. Do I want her growing up in a country with a rapidly increasing population of men from terrifyingly misogynistic countries?

Do you think these men magically leave their misogyny at the border? If these men are not oppressing the women in their home countries then who bloody is?

Why would you be deported? Have you been claiming benefits ever since arriving? Have you committed a crime? You can clearly speak excellent English, so that’s not an issue.

What is a "terrifyingly misogynistic country"? Which are these countries? Does that mean that all people who come from them are "terrifying misogynists"?
You sound terrifyingly racist tbh. Does that imply that Britain is a terrifyingly racist country and others should be wary of letting Brits in?

This is ridiculous, and scaremongering at its worst. Farage is not Hitler part 2, ‘foreigners’ are not going to be marched to gas chambers or placed in death camps. It seems now calling people racist and bigots isn’t working, here we now have the threat of another holocaust happening if Farage gets into power. Just stop it….

Yes. See what NF's mates over in the US are doing as we speak. It's brutal. This is a good update from Meidas Touch:

I agree, I'm in a similar boat I would love to emigrate. My partner lost his job because of my health issues, that was our ticket out of here. I worry for my kids if this country doesn't start to improve. We would go somewhere legally where we speak the language and fit in with the culture too. I'm hopeful reform will turn things around, and we can find happiness here and a better future for our sons.

What do you think will actually improve with a Reform government?

It certainly won't be the economy, or the NHS. What do you think they have planned for education?

reluctantbrit · 27/09/2025 20:16

Mjmum10 · 27/09/2025 19:12

We already have national insurance numbers, why not just put a photo on this? Why do we need a digital id? We have birth certificates. A digital id it's insidious.

Why can't labour deport people without introducing a digital ID? They plan to introduce this, they are saying they will crackdown on illegal immigration we know this is a lie. There is nothing stopping them doing this now.

Edited

A birth certificate is not a proof of citizenship, it just shows that your place of birth is in the UK.

I had several college who had their babies in the UK, non of them have UK citizenship as the parents didn’t qualify for ILR at that time.

I can be British and born abroad so don’t have a “normal” birth certificate”.

A child under 16 does not have a National Insurance number.

Croakymccroakyvoice · 27/09/2025 20:17

Aquilaboy · 27/09/2025 19:19

You don't become 'legal' because you've been here for many years. If you originally came to the uk illegally, then you are still illegal!

People with ILR are here legally!

Muslim countries are very misogynistic. The majority of men in these countries see women as second class citizens. They have it ingrained into them from birth that men are the superior sex. They have zero respect for women, which carries over when they come here. It’s learned behaviour.

StandFirm · 27/09/2025 20:19

Uggbootsforever · 27/09/2025 19:00

Of course people who aren’t British by birth are less likely to approve of Reform as Reform literally exist to prioritise those British at birth over those who are not. Which shouldn’t be remotely controversial. I would love to move to Australia or Canada but due to health problems, 2 small children and the fact I’m not in a desired workforce, I have no hope. I respect their decision to prioritise their own citizens over me. Why wouldn’t they?

Except I bet you wouldn't feel that way if you'd been in Canada living and working there for the last 30 years. A vague ambition to emigrate somewhere is not remotely comparable to the experience of actually building a life somewhere else only to be told to fuck off.

The age of consent in Nigeria is 11 years of age.

Notonthestairs · 27/09/2025 20:23

This policy has nothing to do asylum seekers.

This policy is aimed at citizens who have been living in the UK legally for years.

JoBrandsCleaner · 27/09/2025 20:24

I hope not. I hope people aren’t that stupid to vote them in in the first place but god knows what will happen if they do. My husband is Bengali so happen we’d have to go there for a bit, I’ve been there for a month, 25 years ago and it wasn’t much fun

Only unexpected if the people voting Reform believe they are in substance any different from the average German who was seduced by the polemics of a certain man, blaming all their economic and social woes on those non-Germans and those non-Germans. OK so those ones are tecnhically German, but voilà, Nuremberg laws passed, citizenship revoked.

Revoking the rights of people here legally with settled status? It's just the first step.

We’re not substantially different but we live in different times. The Germans you speak of didn’t have social media or free news, just Goebbels and his propaganda machine and government press. We have such diversity of opinion as we do now as we can contact anyone; world over; whenever we choose, and have access to facts, fact checkers, and opinion from virtually every angle.

I'm worried for my mum, who came here in the early 70s, married to my Dad, who was a British citizen (but also from abroad). From former colonies. My mum was mostly a stay at home mum ("housewife" as it used to be known), but she worked part-time at times, and did pay tax out of it ,though she only earned what she called "pin money". Now she's on a state pension (in her late 80s). Will she be asked to leave because she was a housewife and didn't pay enough tax

She barely paid tax and lived off our public services for most of her life, and now expects a pension etc? And we’re supposed to be fine with that?

She didn't "live off public services", my Dad paid for everything. And I did say she worked part time when she could. But I guess that's not enough for those who reduce everyone's worth to just money.

Being a stay at home mother is the most natural/traditional thing in the world. Are we supposed to penalise the millions and millions of women up and down the country who have done that then? Dutifully cooking, cleaning, looking after kids day in, day out, is the invisible labour no one gets paid for. How are you supposed to pay tax out of that??? Were the men going to do it? Not of that generation! Is it worth nothing then? Only how much you earn?

It's only worth something if you're a white Brit.
Reform is pushing the more 'trad' values - but only for some.

That is simply not true. How can they be far right, they want controlled migration. They want to keep people who add a lot to the economy here. If your born here, have a good career or married to a british citizen you have nothing to worry about.
