I had to go to GP earlier with ongoing bowel issues. She asked me to lay down so she could listen to my abdomen. I laid down, she pressed the stethoscope onto my stomach and I ended up involuntarily farting loudly. She actually jumped back at the sound. Absolutely mortified, I start to apologise and my stomach starts making loud squeaky noises and I end up farting again mid sentence. She remained professional throughout but I’m so embarrassed. I have to go back tomorrow and I’m dreading a) seeing her again and b) it happening again.

DH says will have forgotten all about it. Is he right or just being nice? I feel like cancelling the appointment

She'll have done her stint in A&E, most likely removing a courgette from someone's rectum, so a couple of trumps won't bother her. She's probably grateful to you for testing her reflex reaction to sudden loud noises.

You should not try to hold back a fart or it will travel up your spine into you head & turn your brain into poo

Finally, a sensible and intelligent response!

There you go OP, you saved yourself a medical emergency.

😆

And then your ears will turn into arseholes and you’ll shit on your shoulders.

You will be in a long line of patients who trumped on her. I wouldn’t worry

Mitzuko · 28/09/2025 13:58

Doctors expect anything disgusting, it's part of their job, and she's there to help you. If she judges you she's not there to serve patients and I don't think it will happen

broney · 28/09/2025 16:09

Don't worry about it. If you really are embarrased when you go back, make a joke of it, and ask if she "wants to open a window before you start".

HevenlyMeS · 28/09/2025 20:34

Yes, Tremendously True & I'm sure there's been occasions where doctors broke wind in front of their patients 🙏
Also, they need to accept this is especially to be expected when their patients are mentioning they're suffering from bowel problems 💚

Benicetwice · 29/09/2025 00:25

I think you shouldnt worry they have had worse if u still fel embarrassed make a joke about it

Notbridezilla · 29/09/2025 18:31

I’m a GP, happens all the time, wouldn’t bother me in the least

Lovehascomeandgone · 29/09/2025 20:07

Honestly they are used to it, don’t give it a second thought. Keep your appointment and turn up like nothing happened. No need to be embarrassed, we all fart!

Gossipisgood · 30/09/2025 12:43

We all Fart so stop worrying about it. I'm sure the Dr has witnessed much more 'mortifying things'. She's probably done something in front of her Dr or someone else that she's felt embarrassed about so don't stress about it & def go to your next appointment.

If it helps @BrisPerm, I was asked by the nurse after a smear, to stop gripping as she wanted her speculum back!

DP is training to be a doctor. His attitude is that bodies are like that, and bodily functions are nothing to be embarrassed about
