I had to go to GP earlier with ongoing bowel issues. She asked me to lay down so she could listen to my abdomen. I laid down, she pressed the stethoscope onto my stomach and I ended up involuntarily farting loudly. She actually jumped back at the sound. Absolutely mortified, I start to apologise and my stomach starts making loud squeaky noises and I end up farting again mid sentence. She remained professional throughout but I’m so embarrassed. I have to go back tomorrow and I’m dreading a) seeing her again and b) it happening again.

DH says will have forgotten all about it. Is he right or just being nice? I feel like cancelling the appointment

If it makes you feel better OP I once farted during a smear test.

Please don’t worry, they see and hear all kinds of bodily functions and are immune to it. Her being startled is as natural as your wind, it’s just a body reaction to something.

I hope you get answer and feel better soon.

Reminding me of smear tests. I once broke the speculum I was so tense! The nurse said I had a lucky husband because of it. Didn’t register what she meant until after the appointment 😬 I’ve soiled myself during labour. I’ve also had to tell my doctor earlier this year that I woke up after downing too much liquid morphine in my own diarrhoea and vomit. I was so embarrassed but he didn’t bat an eyelid. My medical issues were more important than that. Had a colonoscopy in July and was awake for it so a team of doctors popping the camera up my backside. Honestly they’ve been there and got the T-shirt. I do apologise whenever I have to have a rectal exam as I do feel for them but they just see it as part of the job they trained for. Please don’t cancel x

I’m a midwife and in addition to birth and postnatal, I’ve worked in sexual health! I’ve been weed, pooed, farted on, vomited on, (plus waters breaking, blood splattering, and all sorts of discharge and breast milk has come on me) and it’s just part and parcel of the job! (Not to mention my own DC who’ve covered me in their excrement through the years 🫠)
It’s bloody embarrassing if it happens to you but I promise your GP won’t think twice about it.

i hope your tummy’s feeling better xx

JillyGiraffe · 26/09/2025 19:37

I laughed, I’m so sorry!
But really farts are far from being the worst thing your doctor has had to deal with. Go to your appointment. I hope you feel better soon!

LOL its not as bad as what happened to me earlier, so I'm in a newish relationship(3 months) and have started spending the odd night round his, (Bare in mind I'm now menopausal in my early 50s and lets just say I can't control my bodily functions as I use too) well this morning he asked for a massage so he rolled onto his stomach and I climbed ontop staddling him and squirted some lotion onto his back, it came out so quickly and the way it splattered his back had me in a fit of giggles as my mind was in the gutter, I laughed so hard I let out an almighty fart then peed a bit all the while still straddling his butt area. thought omg, He laughed and said being farted and peed on was not what I had in mind when i asked for a relaxing massage..so um..yeah..things happen lol x

AmusedGreyMember · 26/09/2025 19:44

Actually Fanny farts are much funnier, when you pull the speculum out ...don't worry about it .

LovingLimePeer · 26/09/2025 19:49

Yeah, she won't think anything of it and will have forgotten by the time you leave the room. Being deadly serious - clinicians have selective memories for examinations.

Rosesanddaffs · 26/09/2025 19:50

@BrisPerm I hope my story makes you feel better.

A few years ago I had to have my bum checked, when the doctor put his finger up my bum for a feel of my piles I let out a wet fart!

I could have died of embarrassment, they had a chaperone there too who witnessed it all 🤦🏻‍♀️

My12garden · 26/09/2025 19:51

I am a nurse and I have heard it many times before, from many patients and I would not remember don’t worry

LovesToMunchPlants · 26/09/2025 19:58

Dr will have seen, heard, smelt it all many times before... do not worry at all, it's much worse for you :)

MyPeppyTurtle · 26/09/2025 20:07

Medical professional here - we've seen it all and heard it all, and honestly, we don't judge. So even if we do remember, it doesn't matter.

Yep, same here.

Epidural farts can be hilarious! I also once had someone misunderstand that we wanted a urine sample and somehow managed to deliver a tiny urine pot full of poo!

Nowimhereandimlost · 26/09/2025 20:15

I was in a Pilates class once and the teacher let one out while demonstrating an exercise. Everyone was looking at her and there was no way of pretending it didn't happen.

What I always remember was the totally calm way she dealt with it - she just said, 'ooops!' and carried on. I really respect her for that.

ASimpleLampoon · 26/09/2025 20:15

Its like a brickie looking at a brick.

Ariana12 · 26/09/2025 20:15

You're absolutely not being unreasonable to be embarrassed. Thats natural. But it's also really good she could see and hear whatever s going on with your tummy. Just focus on that.

crappycrapcrap · 26/09/2025 20:21

She’ll remember and she might even laugh about it at home but it really won’t be a big deal.
At work she’ll be perfectly professional so don’t feel worried at all. You’ll be embarrassed but that’s it.

IAmThePrettiestManOnMyIsland · 26/09/2025 20:25

You were there for bowel issues so I wouldn't worry about it. I'd have made a joke about it along the lines of 'see.'

Had you farted during a smear test it would be a different story 😂

LoremIpsumCici · 26/09/2025 20:31

Don’t be embarrassed. It is proof that your bowel issues are not imaginary.
Ever since I had birth trauma I have been gas incontinent. If I laugh, good chance it will be accompanied by a fart.

dcthatsme · 26/09/2025 20:32

Embarrassing yes! But gosh a doctor will have seen and heard g – plenty that a lot worse than someone farting. I wouldn’t worry. Hope you get this sorted soon xxx

Ruthietuthie · 26/09/2025 20:40

I've just had surgery (on my stomach/intestines) and EVERYONE, EVERYDAY asked me if I had passed wind. And they were so happy when I said yes, as it meant that there was some travel, some movement in my bowels. So definitely don't feel embarrassed. It's a normal body function. You were there for something bowel related anyway. It is nothing to feel ashamed of. Shake it off!

Fightingtobepositive · 26/09/2025 20:40

It’s a GP I’m sure that was not the worst part of her day. She definitely won’t be thinking of that tonight. She probably wouldn’t even remember! Try to rest and relax tonight. I hope you get your troubles sorted xx

Beeloux · 26/09/2025 20:49

Haha if it helps OP, I once went to the GP (who was very handsome) for severe constipation. He did an internal examination and I involuntarily sharted on his finger when he pulled it out 😂😭.

Another time I had a pelvic wound infection after surgery. I ended up in A&E. The doctor pressed on it and a load of green pus squirted up onto his face. Even worse, I saw him a few months after on a night out!

I remember dying of embarrassment both times but now I look back and laugh.

CharlieKirkRIP · 26/09/2025 20:55

Of course it’s embarrassing for you, but this is her job and you won’t have been the first patient that had done this and you won’t be the last.

hcee19 · 26/09/2025 21:02

Believe me, that's nothing....Doctors see allsorts, it's part of the job....please don't worry

Netcurtainnelly · 26/09/2025 21:07

Learn some humour and banter.

How about sorry I'm talking out my arse.
Did you turn the air horn on doctor?
If you use ai to ask it for some stock funny phrases it's good.
Remember a few and use one.

It will be much easier and you won't have to worry.
You deal with it with humour.
