Mortified. Pls tell me dr will forget what I did

I had to go to GP earlier with ongoing bowel issues. She asked me to lay down so she could listen to my abdomen. I laid down, she pressed the stethoscope onto my stomach and I ended up involuntarily farting loudly. She actually jumped back at the sound. Absolutely mortified, I start to apologise and my stomach starts making loud squeaky noises and I end up farting again mid sentence. She remained professional throughout but I’m so embarrassed. I have to go back tomorrow and I’m dreading a) seeing her again and b) it happening again.

DH says will have forgotten all about it. Is he right or just being nice? I feel like cancelling the appointment

It is a true historical quote, not Blackadder. Queen Elizabeth I said it to the Earl of Oxford, who had farted when bowing to
her 7 years earlier.

It was however used in Blackadder

Hollybollyhughes · 27/09/2025 07:34

Could have been worse as in passed a stool or fanny farted! Don't cancel, she's heard a fart before and seriously it's not that bad. Try and laugh about it as in the big scheme of things... Chin up kid.

Atsocta · 27/09/2025 07:51

Bet your dr wished she had a £1 for every fart she heard
it’s fine …get better soon

opencecilgee · 27/09/2025 07:52

your bowels were trying to tell her what’s wrong

All in a days work for her - she'll have seen/heard a lot worse! I wouldn't give it a second thought!

It wasn’t actually, apparently that is a Mandella effect memory. The fart quotes in Blackadder are “bugger off you old fart” and “the Devil farts in my face once again”.

Middlechild3 · 27/09/2025 11:59

lol Doctors are always covered in blood, pus and body fluids, a fart is nothing.

RanchRat · 27/09/2025 13:07

I was on gas and air for a colonoscopy. I called the doctor a stupid cunt, he did not seem to hold it against me.

In my clinical practice I’ve seen literally everything. I’ve been covered in every body fluid imaginable. I’ve been punched, slapped, hugged, kissed. I’ve seen life, death and everything inbetween. I can assure you that it very likely didn’t even register. I can assure you your doctor won’t have even given it a second thought.

Ilikesundays · 27/09/2025 18:38

Sounds as though your bowel is working well! It’s a positive sign and I’m sure it isn’t yet first time the de has heard something similar. Please don’t fret.

At least you have demonstrated the issue.

This! 🤣🤣

CraftyNavyMember · 27/09/2025 18:50

I work for the NHS as believe me we have seen it all. She wont bat an eyelid. You wont be the first or the last person to fart in front of her

mintydoggyv · 27/09/2025 18:51

Of course gp will don't worry

You have the choice, gas and air or sedation

gottalottodo · 27/09/2025 19:07

I can imagine Dr’s have a very different view on these types of things unlike us mere mortals. They probably see and hear (😂) things that would freak ordinary people out everyday

purpleygirl · 27/09/2025 19:12

OP don’t worry doctors are used to this kind of thing and won’t give it a second thought.

My experience might make you feel a bit better and even laugh. I was at the consultant about my urinary incontinence. After drinking a lot of water I had to undress my lower half and lie on the examination couch. It was a small room with just space at the end of the couch for a chair where his assistant sat. He asked me to cough and urine spurted over the poor assistant! I was so embarrassed😅

mrsCtheRed · 27/09/2025 19:12

OP please don't be embarrassed, I can promise you that she will have seen and heard worse.
Years ago, I was at my GPS, being taught how to use the old contraceptive cap.
She was standing at the foot of the examination table, talking me through how to remove it.
I'm there, legs wide, spotlight on, I hooked my finger in it, tugged, and the little bastard shot out of my vag and hit her in the chest!! 🥴🥴
So you see, it could have been MUCH worse 🤣

Styledilemma89 · 27/09/2025 19:18

Have you had children? Once you've given birth and all that comes with it - most people quickly stop worrying about these things!

laura246810 · 27/09/2025 19:24

She honestly wont care. Doctors deal with worse than farts.

Every GP had experienced situations far far worse than a patient passing wind while being examined.

Seajaye · 27/09/2025 20:04

At least she knows you have a problem! Bowel issues can be serious so do attend. Hopefully it's nothing serious. Excessive flatulence can be reduced and managed through dietary controls. and she will refer to you to a dietician . Add if it coincides with peri -menopause, welcome to the club!!
