ID cards to be introduced. What do you feel. ?

I have worked in serious organised crime for two decades. This is one of the best bits of news I have read in a long while. I have also been involved in ‘small boat’ arrivals. The reason people will by pass several safe EU countries to get to the UK is ‘I can get lost if I don’t get asylum’ ‘UK has no ID cards’ . It’s a no brainer .. why why has it taken so long. ? If you want to have the services your country has to offer - through most of the world - from healthcare to the library- you need to show you are a bona-fida citizen. However , for some unfathomable reason , the flag waving right wingers are always the one to oppose ..is it because they are scared it will work and leave their thinly veiled racism floundering ?

Yes to ID cards = YANBU
No to ID cards = YABU

I lived in the uk for many years. What’s different about the uk population when ID cards work well in so many other countries?

Ok so you have what you want where you are. Great I’m not going to say anything more than go for it, it’s the decision of your electorate. Same for here.

Wonder if it will apply to under 18s?

And what does it mean in terms of proof of age ID? If under 18s have to have it too, their clubbing and pubbing days are numbered..!

I'm pro - my adult daughter has a moderate learning disability and no ID once her passport runs out (she never goes abroad so she doesn't need one but we will probably have to get her one just for ID). She has epilepsy so can't have a provisional driving licence.

There is a citizens card that is about £16 as an alternative to passport. Seem rules nneeda professional to verify your identity etc.

OonaStubbs · 27/09/2025 12:11

If they are going to do it, they have to do it properly. I have serious doubts as to whether they will do this.

There has to be serious consequences for anyone found not be carrying their ID. Which is why I think it should be a chip integrated into the body instead of a plastic card or phone app.

Probably issue them at 16, liked to NI number and then you'll need to produce it to access the NHS.

Accessing the NHS and benefits will be the real benefit to Nat ID card.

I have a passport and a driving licence why do I need an ID card? My passport gives all the details they need. Clamp down on the boats first instead of bringing in something that costs more bloody money.

Anyway there's about as much chance of this happening as there is of Kier Starmer being PM by the next general election.

The 70s is a different proposition to a digital ID scheme and all that AI can do.

the Italian ID cards are biometric.

Nope. There do not have to be serious consequences. It is not an ID card.

It is a DIGITAL ID scheme for over 18s to provide proof to an employer that you are entitled to work in this country. Not sure if that means no 14-17s allowed to work from implementation as they cannot prove entitlement? But hey ...early days, I'm sure the whole thing will have been really well thought out 😕

Driving licence doesn't say if your NI contributions are up to date or demonstrate your entitlement to NHS care.

I am staggered so many of you want to be chipped, tagged and tracked. We have no details as to what information will be demanded, who look after/owns the data. If it's a private overseas company is it subject to UK law/scrutiny. Can they sell/use your data? Can the company be purchased (of course it can, it's for profit). What is the cost to us the taxpayer, 1 million/1 billion/100 billion? Harrods is again the victim of a hack. If I knocked on your door and asked you for your various details you would shut the door but here you are clamouring to be picked and you don't know what for. You won't get hospital appointments any quicker or VIP service at M&S and ' foreigners,' will still be here. Who will be exempt? Probably royalty, MPs, certainly non dom types eg the Sunaks and anyone with enough money to hire lawyers. Not that long ago we were told to stay indoors yet the Govt incl the Prime Minister was partying like it was 1999 at our expense. Now the new Govt are again telling you what to do and not for your benefit.

Chiseltip · 27/09/2025 15:05

Also . . .

"You must have a Britcard to get a job"

So, presumably, you must provide some form of I.D to get your Britcard . . .

So the problem of illegal migration is going to be solved by using I.D to get some more I.D . . .

What if the I.D you presented, in order to get the I.D you need to present, to get your Britcard, what if that I.D was fraudulent?

Then you'd have a fraudulent Britcard . .

So you'd still be here illegally . .

The Government's argument seems to be circular. You need a Britcard to prove your I.D. But you need I.D to prove you're entitled to the get the Britcard . . !

It’s really strange to see people wanting more control over their lives.

Plus if the gov says it’s only for work a request for ID already exists, those who don’t want to comply now still won’t with another version on top.

I think this is the best thing the government has done in a long time. I have never understood why the UK didn’t have ID cards. I am a uk born and bread citizen but have spent a long time living abroad in countries that have ID cards. Passports and mobile phone numbers are connected to your ID card and it just works so well wether accessing help from local authorities or travelling.

Why does a mobile phone number need to be linked to the ID card? Some people often change theirs so what happens then, a charge to update it?

It’s digital. A change to update it is simple. You do that for all sorts of changes to your info now.

I don’t mind that other countries do this, it’s up to them. And I question what the 2025 version will be for a digital ID scheme when we have AI making control and access easier.

Are you for real? Seriously? If they brought that in I would outright refuse. As would millions of other people. It won’t happen.

TwistyTurnip · 27/09/2025 16:30

The petition is fast nearing 2 million signatures already and it’s still only Saturday. This will definitely be a vote loser for Labour if they bring it in. I’m almost wondering if they’ve resigned themselves to the fact they won’t be getting a second term so will just push through whatever they can before then. If they bring this in, it will be near on impossible for any new government to reverse it.

There was absolutely zero mention of this in their election manifesto. It should be mandatory that this kind of thing is stated up front, before they gain power, so that people can make an informed choice as to who they want to vote for. I feel like they haven’t been open and upfront about this. They must have known they wanted to introduce this from the very start. So why didn’t they say so in the run up to the election?

It still doesn't need to be linked. I choose who I give my phone number to an often use a fake number if I'm applying for something.

Pedallleur · 27/09/2025 16:35

3 years to get it through Parliament so let's see who will vote it through. We have to hear the details and costs first. Of course if you don't like Labour/Starmer you will be against it anyway,...won't you?

I think the next gov could easily drop it?

We’d just the app closed like the Covid one

I agree re vote loser and the rest
