I have worked in serious organised crime for two decades. This is one of the best bits of news I have read in a long while. I have also been involved in ‘small boat’ arrivals. The reason people will by pass several safe EU countries to get to the UK is ‘I can get lost if I don’t get asylum’ ‘UK has no ID cards’ . It’s a no brainer .. why why has it taken so long. ? If you want to have the services your country has to offer - through most of the world - from healthcare to the library- you need to show you are a bona-fida citizen. However , for some unfathomable reason , the flag waving right wingers are always the one to oppose ..is it because they are scared it will work and leave their thinly veiled racism floundering ?

I really don't see the point in them. They say it's too stop illegal migrants from working but it won't stop them. These people have broken the law and yet they get a roof over their head, food, phones and clothing. It will be the same if we have id cards, those without them will still get treatment at hospitals etc because they will turn to the human rights act again and again. Id cards are a pointless waste of money. i also don't believe they are for our benefit as this government have done nothing to benefit us and there will definitely be an ulterior motive for them! I am not a conspiracy theorist , but Starmer has done nothing but stab us all in the back and tell lies and this will definitely be another lie as to how this will benefit us!

I'm pro - my adult daughter has a moderate learning disability and no ID once her passport runs out (she never goes abroad so she doesn't need one but we will probably have to get her one just for ID). She has epilepsy so can't have a provisional driving licence.

I am also pro ID cards , though I do wonder whether those who just quickly view them will see / access much information.
currently my disabled adult daughter carries a Citizen Card and an Access Pass.
Both of these needed to see some identifying sensitive information before the card application was processed so it means she doesn’t have to continually prove her disability and her access needs , she just shows the cards which prove age and disability

And link it to things like your online profile and browsing habits (which they will, at some point), travel booking, your medical records, your financials via HMRC, your criminal record, if you have one, your voting records once they introduce voting machines like the States, etc etc.

Why, exactly, would anyone want the UK State to have that much oversight, and potential control, of their lives? In what way has ANY Government, (since Cromwell and Co forced the primacy of Parliament on the nation), proved they deserve anything close to that level of faith in them?

Forget 1984 - Orwell wasn’t cynical enough. Try the current Chinese regime for a taste of the possible abuses that digital IDs / citizen profiles allow.

I change my job less than once a decade, carry my Driving License, and have a full UK passport!

I don’t see the point of having a digital ID to prove my right to work as when I started my current job they required:

Passport
Driving License
Copies of MOT and car insurance showing I could drive for business purposes
Original qualification certificates
Proof of professional memberships
CRB check
Utility Bill / Council Tax Bill
Proof of Bank Account
Waver for access to my medical records
Credit Check
Employment reference (from employer)
Personal reference
Birth and Marriage certificates (some of my qualifications are in my maiden name)

Having a Digital ID seems pointless to check my eligibility to work!

I work for a Council, implementing climate change adaptation not M15…..

I previous worked for a government agency - had the same level of checks there too!

Before that I worked for the Ministry of Justice, the same checks, but with family members also checked!

So quite frankly it’s a waste of money if it’s been used to check you are eligible to work!

My concern is that with facial recognition surveillance, location tracking and digital ID on your phone, attending a peaceful protest or rally that the government doesn’t like could cause substantial issues!

When I think about how low the bar is these days on ‘terrorist group’ such as Palestine Action or Just stop oil you can see how this could be used to reduce civil liberties!

I can see how it could be helpful for people without alternative ID, but for those of us with ID already it seems like a complete waste of money!

The black economy and criminal gangs don’t do employment checks… so won’t do anything to tackle that!

The details of my government pension were hacked a couple of years ago! My personal information is on the dark web as a result including my previous salary, address, next of kin (for pension benefit in the event of my death) so I have no confidence in this scheme being secure!

I also had to produce my P60 and my last three months of pay slips when I started my job!

I can’t believe that I had forgotten to add them in the list!

BestBeforeddmmyy · 26/09/2025 19:31

I am really pleased.

TwistyTurnip · 26/09/2025 19:31

Petition is already at £1.3 million signatures, and rising fast. Oh dear, it’s really not going to help Labour’s approval ratings is it 😂

ODFOx · 26/09/2025 19:35

Sounds good to me. Cheaper than passports and gives everyone a valid ID.
Im bemused by why so many people are worried. It’s been standard in most European countries for decades.

MaidOfSteel · 26/09/2025 19:44

Just now, I’d say I’m against the digital ID cards, but have questions.

How will it stop the small boat arrivals?
How will it stop black market working or rentals by slumlords?
Will my personal info be completely safe from hacking? And will my data be sold by the government to make more money for them?
How can we ensure there is no ‘mission creep?’ We know that these things always spread far outside their original parameters; Asylum itself, for example. Assisted dying will end up going the same way if it is brought in. HMRC can raid bank accounts. I don’t want to have every trip outside of my house monitored, for instance.

I just believe it will turn into big brother state surveillance of us all. But I’m open to being convinced otherwise.

How do you know they are cheaper than passports? We haven't heard about costs. These cards won't replace passports.

mushypeasontoast · 26/09/2025 19:47

I have a fairly niche job that means I spend most of my life checking right to work.

Before bringing in pointless digital ID cards, fix the damn system.

I can check passport
I can take a combination of documents eg birth cert and NI evidence.

Evisas are a bloody nightmare.

The whole system relies on someone somewhere cross checking NI numbers with employer records, or on employers being honest.

Digital ID won't solve this.

Pedallleur · 26/09/2025 19:48

Just been reading about Palantir who do this spy work. Won't be cheap and they have been caught out in various legal issues eg employing staff.

Retired65 · 26/09/2025 19:49

Well, it will be needed if you want to work. I know our present National Insurance cards don't have our photo on but perhaps we could have our photo on. Not everyone has a smartphone.

TwistyTurnip · 26/09/2025 19:50

Also, it discriminates against people by requiring them to have an ID card because they are working. If working people have them, so should people on benefits.

StrongLikeMamma · 26/09/2025 19:52

What difference will it really make?

Exactly

ThistleTits · 26/09/2025 19:59

@Fishingboatbobbingnight it might be ok at the present time. Unfortunately, we don't know what kind of future government will be in power. It wouldn't take much for an authoritarian government to abuse such a system. This reason makes it a no from me.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 26/09/2025 20:00

Most other countries have id cards and require carrying id. Its crazy we dont already

ThistleTits · 26/09/2025 20:02

Aaron95 · 25/09/2025 17:08

Perhaps someone can explain one single reason for doing this. Because I cannot see any advantge over the exsting system.

The argument that it will cut down on illegal employment is a joke. Employers are already obliged to check you have the right to work in the UK before employing you. Guess what - the unscrupulous ones don't do it now. What makes anyone think the fact your ID has gone from a paper document to an electronic one will make the slightest difference to them.

This ^ says it all in one post.

NotThisShitAgain121 · 26/09/2025 20:07

Bad move.

Billybea · 26/09/2025 20:10

Yes!! Best bit of news I've heard. Most of us carry driving licences etc anyway. If you've got nothing to hide then why not.

SarahJane03 · 26/09/2025 20:13

As ex armed forces I have zero issue with carrying an ID card. I don't however want a digi one. I also lived in Spain for 20 years and carrying your ID was mandatory. If you've got nothing to hide it is a no brainer.

I don't carry a driving license and we are entitled to privacy.

Hell no, we have a right to a private life

Where I'm from, we've had ID cards for a long time. They're easy to fake, we haven't been great with keeping track of our refugees and have a porous border, although some positive changes are occurring now. Oh, we also have illegal working, too. I spent a lot of time in France, a country who've also had ID cards for a long time and they're not doing such a great job of controlling their borders either.

I also work in Tech and have a background in data security. No way in hell will I have the necessary confidence in this scheme to have a government app on my device.

I'm certainly not a flag-waving right wing lunatic, either. Neither are the Liberal Democrat party, who for decades have opposed this policy.
