Really embarrassing poo question

l can't believe l'm typing this but l am! Full disclosure, l have a GP appointment next Thursday so l'm doing the right thing but just wondered if anyone at all had ever had problems getting themselves clean after a bowel movement??
l open my bowels, use either wet wipes or that Wype gel and 'think' l'm clean. I then go for a wee a little while later and it's like l've never wiped at all! I then have to go through the whole palaver and this can happen 2 or 3 times. It never used to happen so something has changed, although no clue what! I'm in my early 60's sometime constipated so l take Movicol which makes it softer, otherwise l'm at a loss to explain it, hence the GP appointment. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same? Sorry if this is TMI! But thanks anyone in advance!

Ok, so this is gross, but I have found that if you push your finger (covered in toilet paper!) up your anus a little bit it cleans just inside and stops all the smearing.
I read it on reddit, or somewhere similar, where there was a discussion on how to get your bum clean.

With those plumbed in douche nozzles, does it mean you are having to wash with cold water?

Some are warm water some are only cold.

We have a cold model because it was cheaper and because only my husband uses that function 😂

( If I was using it would pay the extra for a hot tap)

This. Do you have children? If so, did you tear after birth? I had a severe tear after my first and my consultant for my second said that it’s a common issue after any stage of tear/episiotomy. I image also linked to a weak pelvic floor too.

Someone said above, magnesium helps. As do those water squirty bottles (that’s a proper technical term, don’t you know 😆), that you can clean yourself with afterwards. I use cotton pads. Be careful with wipes as they can cause long term irritation!

Toilet paper moistened with a bit of tap water is less likely to irritate. I also had to stop buying cheap toilet paper because of terrible irritation. The famous puppy one seems fine!

Pelvic floor exercises. Pilates. Fibergel daily.

The squirty bottle, like the lucozade sport ones, is an excellent idea! Cheap and practical, even fits in most handbags and won't embarrass you if you keep one in the loo (if that sort of thing bothers you). Good one 👍

I can't recommend kegels enough. I completely cured my pee urgency and having to get up to wee at 5 in the morning. Somewhat improved orgasm too. Not sure about anal issues, as I don't have those - yet! 😆

DiscoBob · 25/09/2025 11:17

I used to get this kind of messy wiping situation and it was to do with the laxatives I was using.

I now use docusate and it softens the stools but doesn't give diarrhea or leakage or mess. Sometimes when I wipe now the paper is clean first time!

Maybe try switching to that? Take two or three tablets before bed?

RosyDaysAhead · 25/09/2025 18:12

Sounds like you may have an impacted bowel - especially since you mentioned needing movicol. Basically, there is a hard lump of faecal matter in your bowel and some poop is moving round it, making its way so you feel the urge to poop. Then more liquid poop is behind it. You do the poop, wipe and feel clean, then the liquid poop trickles out behind it, but is such a small amount you can feel it.

what you probably need is some predators to get the hard lump of poop to live and then regular bowel movements will happen again.

Pessaries* not predators! (I swear I changed it before i posted and it changed back!’)

Stool softener makes this problem much worse.

You could have external skin tags from previous piles. I have this and am considering private surgery to remove. No matter how clean I think I am, I can also have the issues you have mentioned. For the time being I have conditioned myself to ‘go’ first thing , followed by a thorough shower.

I have these too and I’m on the NHS waiting list. I thought they were piles. (Terrible issues 10 years on since pregnancy) and they’re going to laser the piles and remove the skin tags. You may not need to pay privately

Or better still a babywipe

Changename12 · 25/09/2025 18:32

I have lived with this for nearly 40 years. After the birth of my second child, I got piles. They are fine most of the time but occasionally flare up. During my post birth checks with the doctor, I explained this and she said yes there will be a problem with wiping. I have perfect poo, according to the Bristol Stool Chart, so it is not that. I have thought about having my piles banded, but that comes with risks and usually it doesn’t last forever. I appreciate the post about the bum gun but even if I washed myself it could still appear later. I am going to have a Korean toilet seat fitted on my next bathroom refitting though. When my piles flare up I use Anusol suppositories and when I use these the problem stops as I have a sort of plug. So if I need to go out anywhere special, I will put one in.

Just very basic soup recipes. For example, for cauliflower, I'll cook a small chopped onion and couple cloves of garlic in a few tablespoons of olive oil, add some dried herbs (thyme, rosemary etc), cook lightly until onion is tender, then add a good splash of white wine, and enough vegetable stock to cook half a chopped cauliflower and a diced potato. Add seasonings like white pepper and nutmeg to taste, simmer until everything is tender.

Then zap well with the stick blender. Perhaps add a little Greek yoghurt before serving.

Thank you

but you get two in one...I'm sure quick cold water blast up your nethers has all the benefits of a cold water swim, on top of leaving you lovely and clean.

Waitingforaprick · 25/09/2025 18:35

If you've been taking movicol long term, this can suddenly happen. Recently happened to me after taking for 4yrs. I reduced the dose by half and problem solved.

Smallwins · 25/09/2025 18:50

Alongside pelvic floor exercises I'm a huge poo stool advocate, positioning yourself into a squat hugely increases your chance of a 'clean break' decreasing wiping requirements 😁

pinksherbert · 25/09/2025 18:53

Try some fibre sachets and see if that changes things for you..
I had the exact same issue this year, started taking psyillim husk that I take daily and the issue has gone! It was all related to lack of fibre

SpigTheFish · 25/09/2025 18:55

Just popping on here to say that you can have a rectocele even if you've never given birth.

They can be caused by constipation or may be a birth defect.

Ihateboris · 25/09/2025 19:16

I have a rectocele and was told that it can only be fixed surgically. It's fucking awful. Sorry if it's TMI but sometimes when I go for a poo, my anus literally feels like it's hanging out and I have to physically push it back up. I haven't had children but did overuse laxatives for many years due to an eating disorder, which is maybe what caused it. I just have to live with it now as I can't afford to go private and the NHS don't think it's necessary!!

LadydeBathe · 25/09/2025 19:24

coldandflu · 24/09/2025 18:53

Not up to UK code. Don't use. You'll be drinking poo water

This is quite an ignorant comment. Completely misunderstanding basic plumbing.

And we don’t have ‘codes’ in the UK.

whiteandgreenandgold · 25/09/2025 19:26

OP thank you for having the courage to post about this, I've secretly been struggling with the same issue for a few years now. I feel like it's my dirty secret, literally! I feel shame about my underwear and fear anyone knowing. I haven't the courage to see my GP as I feel quite disgusting, I will watch and see what you come back with. It's reassuring to know I am
not alone.

RanchRat · 25/09/2025 19:59

I have had this problem for many years - I am a bit leaky following a colo-rectal cancer op. My solution might be a bit yukky for you but I find if I use a finger to clean out my rectum after a poo, there is nothing lurking in there to leak out.

The UK is so antiquated, go a bit more SE Asian:

I do too and can actually see my bowel bearing down due to gravity.. I also physically push back up. I have the same problem as the OP but never constipation. I also have IBS . Am 68 and was worrying about all of this for quite a while before I went to the GP a couple of years ago and all bloods came back fine, also the Bowel cancer poo test. Never had a scan or colonoscopy as the bloods were fine.
My husband had a poo test a yr ago. All apparently was fine, then he had a major emergency op and a stoma fitted 9 months ago., followed by chemo. He is fine now, looking forward to a reconstruction this year/next yr. The poo test is not always reliable so best to see a doctor.
