I also grew up in the 70s and there were indeed children that were what you call slow - lower intellect. There were also children who were introverted, low on social skills, the ones we called odd and those with behavioural issues. But they all managed to attend school. I went to a very big school and literally no one ever had a meltdown down or was unable to attend because the environment was too challenging. The severity of autism has changed if not the absolute numbers.

My dad reckons he is autistic. He would have been battered by the brothers if he had a meltdown in class. I'd say the kids that can manage mainstream school with support but are diagnosed just had to mask very heavily and pay the price with their mental health.

When was paracetamol first introduced?
ChatGPT said:
Paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen in the US and Canada) was first introduced for medical use in 1955.
Key Historical Points:
1877: The chemical compound acetanilide (a related compound) was first used, but it had toxic side effects.
1887: Paracetamol itself was first synthesized by Harmon Northrop Morse.
1940s–1950s: Research confirmed that paracetamol was safer than other related drugs like acetanilide and phenacetin.
1955: Paracetamol was introduced as a pain reliever and fever reducer under the brand name Tylenol by McNeil Laboratories in the United States.
1956: It became available in the UK under the brand name Panadol.
Let me know if you'd like info on how it compares to aspirin or ibuprofen.

What was acetanilide used for?
ChatGPT said:
Acetanilide was originally used as a fever-reducing and pain-relieving drug (an antipyretic and analgesic) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Key Uses of Acetanilide:
Fever reduction: It was one of the first drugs used to lower fever.
Pain relief: Used to relieve mild to moderate pain, much like paracetamol and aspirin today.
Historical Timeline:
First used in 1886 under the trade name Antifebrin.
Quickly adopted due to its effective antipyretic properties.
Problems with Acetanilide:
It was found to have toxic side effects, particularly:
Methemoglobinemia (a blood disorder where hemoglobin can't release oxygen effectively)
Liver and kidney damage with prolonged use
These issues led researchers to look for safer alternatives, which is how they eventually discovered that paracetamol (a metabolite of acetanilide) was responsible for the beneficial effects without the dangerous side effects.
So, in a way, acetanilide was the stepping stone that led to the development of modern painkillers like paracetamol.
You said:
How widely was acetanilide used?
ChatGPT said:
Acetanilide was widely used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly from its introduction in 1886 until around the 1940s, when its risks became more apparent and safer alternatives like paracetamol (acetaminophen) and phenacetin were developed and adopted.
Scope of Use:
Medical Community Adoption: When it was first introduced as Antifebrin in 1886, it was quickly embraced by physicians due to its effectiveness in reducing fever and alleviating pain.
Popularity: It became a common over-the-counter remedy in Europe and the United States, especially before the widespread understanding of drug metabolism and toxicity.
Global Reach: Its use spread throughout much of the industrialized world, as it was seen as a modern, science-based alternative to traditional herbal remedies.
Why It Was So Widely Used:
It was easy to manufacture, relatively inexpensive, and effective at symptom relief.
At the time, there were limited options for treating fever and pain, making acetanilide an attractive option.
Decline:
By the 1930s–1940s, reports of serious side effects—especially methemoglobinemia and liver toxicity—led to decreased use.
It was eventually replaced by its less toxic metabolite paracetamol (acetaminophen) and by phenacetin (which also turned out to have its own issues).
In Summary:
Acetanilide was a mainstream drug for several decades and played a major role in the evolution of antipyretic and analgesic treatments, despite its eventual fall from favor due to toxicity. It’s now mainly of historical and pharmacological interest.

Purely anecdotally and looking back with the knowledge I have now...

I'm 64. When I was at Primary school there were children who behaved 'differently'. Corporal punishment was still a thing and you were given a beating if you transgressed. Many of these children were terrified into compliance. Some just went through school being 'the weird ones'. Everyone knew of someone who had a brother (or sometimes, very occasionally a sister) who didn't go to school for some unknown reason, or who had been sent away to a 'different school' and were never seen in public. At secondary school the 'beaten into compliance' was still evident, but for a few 'bad girls' who were 'disappeared' (and rumoured to have been sent to Borstal, but who knows?). I was one of the 'weird kids' but too scared of my mother, the teachers, the police etc to act up.

I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. I took paracetamol during ALL my pregnancies (my SIL was a midwife and told me that there was no need to suffer and paracetamol had been proved safe in pregnancy). One of my children has AuDHD, one has likely ADHD but never diagnosed. The other three are perfectly NT.

What was actually said:

“I see that disinfectant, it knocks it (the novel coronavirus) out in a minute. One minute. Is there a way we could do something like that, by injection inside (the body)?”, Trump asked medical advisers at the White House during the Coronavirus Task Force daily briefing on Thursday, April 23, 2020

And that's better in what way?

ColdSalads · 23/09/2025 11:39

oneoneone · 23/09/2025 11:37

I'm not sure if you're trolling but he was asking a question to advisors, not advocating that people inject it/drink it.

Tell me you're susceptible to media manipulation without telling me you're susceptible to media manipulation.

spoonbillstretford · 23/09/2025 11:42

I wonder what Trump's hot take on narcissism is.

There seems to be an epidemic of it among politicians and heads of state. Between Russia and the USA it has mysteriously increased by 50% since 2024.

Perhaps we should be working out what Trump's mother consumed when she was pregnant and banning it?

The question was scientifically illiterate and ridiculously irresponsible during a public health crisis. It revealed a childish, simplistic mentality and complete lack of interest in scientific rigour.

Johnson played the part of jovial buffoon when it suited him, but to be fair he didn't talk shit over medical advisors during C19.

Phoenix45 · 23/09/2025 11:46

Absolutely harmful rhetoric that not only perpetuates the thinking that Autism is a problem and can be “cured” but also blaming mothers, which is reminiscent of the “refrigerator mother”
theory back in the 1940s/50s.
It’s not surprising tbh coming from a bigot and a misogynist. Just so backward.

Um, well, I watched the actual press conference at the time. And it's true, he didn't suggest people drink bleach. He just demonstrated his absolute moronic lack of understanding of science in front of the entire world, which, is not better, if you ask me.

Tell me you're down a YouTube/x algorithmic rabbit hole that makes you think you're smarter than the 'sheeple' without telling me you're down a YouTube/x algorithmic rabbit hole that makes you think you're smarter than the 'sheeple.'

Countless people on here promoted the media manipulated lie, it's laughable.

Is Trump an idiot - yes, just as much as the previous idiot.

But I'm fed up with letting blantant lies not be challenged.

Nothing very brave in going with the narrative of this administration, surely?

You're not really answering questions.

So, how do you feel about all the grants and funding he's cancelled? How do you feel about the curtailing of cancer research? What's the rationale for that?

What have you seen so far, that makes you believe there will be real studies, properly conducted?

What, specifically, about his testimony did you think was great?

I'm not going to convince you with arguments as you have your mind made up. I am looking forward to seeing the results of the studies. You aren't. That's ok.

You don't like or respect RFK jr and think he is not intelligent, I do. That's ok!! We can disagree and I don't have to try to convince you of my side. You judge the I'm wrong and haven't done enough research, that's ok. I think I have and have a different opinion to you.

I have liked and respected RFK Jr for many years for many different reasons - I'm not someone who has just come across him recently and been influenced by the current narrative.

I support anyone, whoever it may be, finding the cause or causes of autism, or any illness affecting children. There is zero chance of any argument or point I make making one iota of difference to your opinion on any of these subjects.

sittingonabeach · 23/09/2025 11:59

@ColdSalads so are there disinfectants that are good to ingest/inject?

I didn't agree with everything the late Janey Godley said but I'm with her on this.

Trump on autism
LaurieFairyCake · 23/09/2025 12:01

I’m really pleased he’s said this, finally we have an explanation for autism (not really).

I’m really enjoying watching the MAGA lot twist themselves in knots over this as he’s finally said something any of the vaguely normal Republicans will take issue with if they engage their brains.

Best I’ve seen so far is a Republican say ‘well at least someone is looking for an explanation’. That is brilliantly damning with faint praise.

ColdSalads · 23/09/2025 12:03

sittingonabeach · 23/09/2025 11:59

@ColdSalads so are there disinfectants that are good to ingest/inject?

Don't you know, you're the one repeating that's what he said when in fact he didn't. I'll ask again, who is the liar, you or him?

sittingonabeach · 23/09/2025 12:09

@ColdSalads you are amazing that you are standing up for an idiot who asked whether it would be possible to inject disinfectant or 'almost a cleaning' in front of the world media, when he knows that there would a be a large amount of vulnerable, scared people watching who might think, well the President said that so it must be right.
