"Can I take you out for a meal"?

Would you find this odd? It sounds like it's come from the 70s. What's a meal anyway? It sounds creepy. Lunch or dinner maybe yes but a meal?

I said I was busy.

There really are strange people out there.

Out there?

In here! 🤣

I created an account to join the chaos, AND I DIDN'T EVEN DO THAT FOR PENIS BEAKER.

The human race is going to die out pretty darn quickly at this rate

I know, it's wonderful isn't it 😁

For a bit of context, this is a man I've chatted with at the sports centre. It seems a bit full on to say this to me as we've only said hello, had a nice weekend sort of thing. He's nice but a bit quaint.

I genuinely am busy on Saturday all day I wasn't fobbing him off. I might suggest meeting for a coffee in the day instead. A "meal" seems a bit much, but I guess he could have meant fish and chips for all I know.

It’s literally just going out for something to eat. You sound like hard work.

74Violette · 24/09/2025 13:31

Nothing wrong with the word 'meal' that's quite normal. If I was being asked out I'd prefer him to say "How about we go for a meal sometime?" and then if I went, I'd go halves.

Umidontknow · 25/09/2025 05:11

You are weird. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that question. Sounds like he dodged a bullet.

HatStickBoots · 25/09/2025 09:58

This man has no idea how many bullets he’s dodged. “Can I take you out for a meal?” should come with a health warning.

A whole hail of bullets. An ammunition dump worth of bullets.

You've all mostly decided I'm a weird nutcase who's dangerous, as there's a lot of bullets involved in posts here, so I think I'll just hibernate for the winter.

If you would have gone out on a date before he said it, why don’t you just go and see how it pans out? It might have just been an awkward interaction from an otherwise perfectly nice bloke or he might be one dated phrase after another and no more chances from you? You won’t know unless you go.

HatStickBoots · 25/09/2025 11:53

Times have changed since all I got was “Fwoooarrr! I betcha don’t get many o’ them to the pound?” And “Fancy a bit do ya?”

Overtheatlantic · 25/09/2025 12:01

In the film “Notting Hill” Huw Grant’s roommate wears a Tshirt that says “Fancy a shag?” I think he wears it on a date 😆

I’d forgotten that! 🤣

I agree OP. Although I can’t explain why - a bloke once asked me out and said he’d get some ‘nice picky bits in’. I never turned up! Argh, what a cringe

More cringe to not show up instead of being a big girl and telling him you wouldn't be there

Just tell them you aren’t interested. No need to be a weirdo about it.

MyMiniMetro · 26/09/2025 09:10

…..aaaaand that’ll be why you’re still single.

Are you really freaked out about the words used, or are you someone who is freaked out by a potential date being nice to you for a change?

If you’re mostly used to being metaphorically ‘clubbed round the head and dragged back to the cave’ by neanderthals, then formal invitations like this will feel abnormal.

I genuinely think you need therapy if you’re getting the ick when a potential date treats you nicely.

Julimia · 26/09/2025 20:41

Just what is creepy about that? Tea, dinner, lunch, are all meals. If you don't want to go then don't.

Firefly1987 · 26/09/2025 21:55

See if this was me I'd be focusing on all the dumb cringe things I'd probably said on the date not the other person. Must be nice to be perfect!

NarnianQueen · 27/09/2025 08:48

I’d take it as meaning they want to make it clear they’re paying!
