To think criminals are very common?

I see lots of threads on here claiming moral high ground and pearl clutching for example about people not correcting large company’s on a billing mistake. All very tsk tsk tsk “that’s stealing” etc.

it got me thinking, I’m sure it’s dependent on your region but I don’t believe there’s a single person where I’m from that doesn’t either know or have a relation to a criminal in some way. If mums net was a true representation of the public, surely criminals would be shunned from communities and the holier than thou would reign free.

where I’m from, everybody, and I do mean everybody - either knows someone directly or are themselves involved in illegal activity in some way. Even if it was historically. It’s astoundingly common. Anyone who claims otherwise is either lying or incredibly naive.

what are your thoughts? How do the whiter than white cope in life? FWIW there’s absolutely not a chance on this earth I’d correct for example Tesco on sending me a free online shop by mistake. I’d actually find it more morally inferior TO correct them.

The stats say that something like 30% of men in the UK have a criminal record excluding motoring offences(!)

Really?! Love to see that link.

Anothercoffeeafter3 · 24/09/2025 08:18

If you think of it like the American system of felony vs misdemeanour a lot of people will know someone who has had a misdemeanour offence e.g speeding or possession for personal use but a lot would not associate with the felon. If you include civil enforcement the numbers would be even bigger with school fines.

As the saying goes - If it’s punishable by a fine it’s only a crime if your poor

Most of the country lives in areas that are deprived. Youre saying this like it is an insult that someone living in a deprived area should feel ashamed of. Reality is that many of the rich people living in nice areas do so because they have been and still are doing something illegal. Might be tax evasion, might be cocaine dealing, might be fraud. And those who do not? They use their legally earned money to buy drugs, use sex workers, and frequent places which exist to launder money.

Your ignorance is just that, ignorant.

You said’Most of the country lived in areas that are deprived.’

No, they don’t. Most of the country (well 51%) have one measure of deprivation according to your link.

This doesn’t mean they all live in a deprived area, Even though that’s what you said. A1/3 of the country live in a deprived area.

Stop twisting things.

I’m h @LoftyRobin you weee the one arguing that you feel no safer in a single space changing room than mixed.

I mean…. On the basis of that alone, I think I’ll just ignore future posts from you. As others have decided to do

No i don't because women close to me enabled my sexual abuse so I see women as no less likely to exploit me than I do men. Might just be for different reasons but also sometimes not. Female paedophiles just get off at molesting children too. Sorry if that offends you..

Okay so only a third live in a deprived area, but more than half experience one area of deprivation, is that correct?

If so, that's still a shitload of people who are competing for basic resources and explains why so many turn to some form of crime

LoftyRobin · 24/09/2025 15:45

My ex used to sell cocaine, MDMA and poppers to nice business men with wives and families around Hampstead and Highgate. Their wives had no idea what their Jonty did at work. Literally on his lunch break at work they'd be meeting street dealers so they had some lines for 4pm pub time.

Ive even had 2 dads covertly ask me as a midwife if their secret recreational drug use would have harmed the baby. Both married middle classed white men married to very sensible and nice ladies who probably frequent this site.

lol. I don’t live in a dodgy area I live rurally so unless you class my land as dodgy and animals as criminals?

however the city I grew up in yes absolutely 100% of people are related to drugs in one way or another.

It is ridiculous to say that 100% of people living in cities are related to drugs. I know people who live in cities who would never go near drugs are you including alcohol? In a very specific area of a city the % could be quite high, but every nurse, doctor, policeman, teacher, taxi driver, bus or train driver, building site worker a lot of those professions are randomly drug tested and failing means you get fired, or pregnant women. Or are they all dealing in their spare time?

Well some of it was social deprivation through illness. Which l fit into. I’m not competing for any resources.

Neither are my ndn. Neither is my dd who has a long term disability.

You are pointing out in your link that not all deprivation is economic, then say all of the people includided are competing for resources. It’s not true.

I live in a huge city with a massive drug problem.

No one in my extended family or friends have anything to do with drugs.

So the NHS in your area isnt flailing under cuts etc? Ambulances are on time, waiting lists decent, all that? Yes?

This side quest into posters being mortally offended at the implication they might live in deprived areas is peak mumsnet

😂

I’m the same as the OP. Everyone where I come from is either dodgy themselves or knows someone dodgy. DH comes from a nicer area than I do, but his village is the same.

what are your thoughts? I’m sure there are plenty of people who are law abiding and don’t have any law breaking/drug taking friends. Maybe in slightly older age groups? At least, I hope there are.

How do the whiter than white cope in life? FWIW there’s absolutely not a chance on this earth I’d correct for example Tesco on sending me a free online shop by mistake. I’d actually find it more morally inferior TO correct them I’m 99.9% good as gold. I won’t even let DH download a film illegally. I wouldn’t accept a Tesco delivery that wasn’t for me; not because I’d be averse to keeping it, but because I couldn’t be arsed with being asked to pay for it if they came knocking. I can still recognise old bill at 500 paces but I don’t think that ever leaves you. The peace of mind that comes from knowing my house will never be turned over by police is totally worth it.
