Farage promises to deport people with ILR

1000 replies

Acidburn · 22/09/2025 12:21

Posting in AIBU for traffic.
Nigel Farage stated he would deport anyone with existing indefinite leave to remain. We are talking about millions of people.
This terrifying. If people live here, work here, have kids and mortgages - where are they supposed to go?

Stupid fucker.

dropoutin · 22/09/2025 18:40

I've lived in this country for 35 years - almost all of my adult life. Apart from a brief initial study period (which I paid the fees for) have worked and paid tax all that time. Never claimed benefits. Have a child here. Under these rules I'd be gone - back to the country I was born in but never worked in, and which isn't one of the ones in which a UK pension is increased yearly with inflation. Absolutely extraordinary.

First reaction is that it would be legally impossible. But then look at Trump's ability to just trample all over the law, and the way these populists specifically appeal to people by being simplistic in their promises to "cut red tape". People love it; it makes them feel like the government enacting what they want will be so much more powerful, so by extension it makes them feel powerful. It's also a big middle finger to all the technocrats and experts that they've been primed to hate and to blame. So it wouldn't surprise me at all if it happens.

Second reaction is that it might just be Farage's step too far. Most people probably know someone like me, that they think of as effectively "belonging" here, British in all but name, that they might not even be aware is on ILR rather than holding citizenship. At this point they might think "hang on..."

But then we've seen even on this site just how the racism and bigotry and hatred is snowballing. Just when you think you've seen its limit, it goes one step further. And it's uniquely impervious to reason so pretty much unstoppable. There'll probably be some vague statement about exemptions that will make them think "OK then, it won't happen to my nice white friend". Like Brexit, when they don't really know what the hell they're voting for. And then their nice white friend is out. And that'll probably be the woke left's fault.

So bigots: This is the point at which we stop worrying about your poor little hurt feelings and how you HAVE to get behind nice Mr Farage because he's the only one willing to save you. This is personal, and it wasn't me/us that chose to make it so. Your boss wants to destroy my life, and by supporting him so do you. I no longer give two shits what the government does to you or for you. My priority is to protect myself and my child from the effects of your profound stupidity.

Fuck you.

What Boris got to do this?

Just one of the people in the UK with immigrant background. We want many out to keep British values. Might as well go scorch earth, no?

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/09/2025 18:43

I had a meeting today at work on a project that is about signifcantly improving key parts of our infrastructure, especially in underserved places.

If we lost people with settled status and ILR I would lose about about a third of the team and the country would lose a good amount of very highly skilled and well paid professionals.

Iamthemoom · 22/09/2025 18:48

@dropoutin
Very well said. Absolutely agree and feel the same. My parents were both immigrants who came here as children, worked from age 16, paid taxes and never claimed benefits. My dad never had citizenship and at Brexit I had to get him leave to remain. I’m glad he’s not alive to see this absolute shit show because he’d be on Farage’s list.

NautilusLionfish · 22/09/2025 18:50

Are the Battenbergs and Saxe-Coburg Gothas living on the largest benefits in the biggest tax payer palaces hotels in the country deportable? Am sure they Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha would love their royals back. Or do they get a pass because they wave so beautifully? I mean, that's skilled migrants right there

WalkDontWalk · 22/09/2025 18:58

usernamealreadytaken · 22/09/2025 15:58

If I was in that situation I’d probably want to have the same nationality as my spouse and children.

That hasn't answered the question, has it?

WalkDontWalk · 22/09/2025 19:00

British values, my arse.

Speaking as a Brit with family going back well into the mists of time, I'd like to say that if what Farage represents is British values, then not only do I not expect immigrants to adopt them, I want the fuck rid of them myself.

And before anyone says 'if you don't like it, leave the country', I'll just stress that I am as British as shepherd's pie, and my values are solidly British, and completely at odds with Reform's. If leaving the country is their solution to being out of step with local values, maybe they should fuck off to Alabama.

This would break the deal we had with Brexit, no? I doubt even doable. He's just a hideous attention grabbing liar, it's going to be horrible having him as our PM.

No it wouldn't break the Brexit deal because Reform are not proposing to scrap European Settled Status, which grants the same rights as ILR for EU citizens to claim benefits.

The proposed changes to Indefinite Leave to Remain would only non-EU citizens, because of the Brexit withdrawal agreement.

EasternStandard · 22/09/2025 15:54

Yes exactly. If anyone thinks they will be deported it’s because they’re in the small group that don’t follow requirements.

With IRL, there's no requirement to take citizenship. It's an option. It's not a requirement.

MsJinks · 22/09/2025 19:06

Iamthemoom · 22/09/2025 18:08

I said this to DH this morning. And that would be me. He said that was ridiculous because I’m British but I’m not sure it is ridiculous. It’s the next logical step in making Britain white again. I keep thinking of what Katie Hopkins said at the rally. She said ‘this is what London should look like every day’ I took that to mean the sea of only white faces and it made me feel sick.

WT! - I was in the counter match - personally think ‘this is probably what a Dante’s circle of hell looks like’ would have been more apt.
That’s a bit facetious- honestly there are few who agree with Hopkins, she’s a vile, vile woman, who says vile, vile things and that’s why she got on that vile, funded March - but I still do believe there are more decent folk than not, just we are quieter and less organised right now.
But having said that these are worrying times - not least when people choose to ignore, disseminate, avoid - but maybe it’s just too scary a thought.
Take care.

I absolutely love legal immigrants. Not a fan of criminals though.

Thicko. You think the illegals are criminals? The criminals are in the RF and the government

Yes I haven’t said otherwise. If you follow the conversation it’s about using the term deportation correctly.

So, he is just singling out non-EU immigrants?

I wonder why 🤔

Whattodointhissituation · 22/09/2025 19:10

I’m finding the whole situation deeply depressing and upsetting.

When people try to justify their support for this rhetoric by saying it’s not bigotry, racism and otherism - it’s a load of nonsense - of course it is and it’s becoming more explicitly so everyday. My local FB community page is full of vitriol.

I’m a British born but my parents were immigrants and naturalised. My husband has EU settled status and we have children.

I have never felt so unwanted in what I see as my home and my country. Undoubtedly, “dual citizens” will be targeted next (they of course won’t use the word British citizens - othering is easy with a twist of words).

For those who support this vile movement, there will be a day when they’ll target you too - maybe you’re too old, disabled, sick, gay, wrong political view (don’t forget he wants to do away with our human rights (but protect free speech - make it make sense))…..and you’ll be alone….its all fine until you are the target .

Depressingly, I don’t see how Reform won’t get elected - the electorate is too divided at the moment when it comes the other parties.

In his dreams, it will never happen.

No but it's throwing a very lard crust indeed to the gammons.

mugglewump · 22/09/2025 12:48

@Friendlygingercat, how do you define too many people? Or too many immigrants? The biggest group of economically inactive are pensioners, like yourself. We need the working age immigrants to support our ever increasingly aged population. And those 'unproductive, negative contributors' are largely children who will be working and paying taxes in the next 10 to 15 years, supporting the likes of you. Please stop this inhumane hate and realise that it is the billionnaire newpaper barons that are manipulating you because they wish to hide the truth that it is the super wealthy that are making us poor, not the desparate to make a better lives for their families immigrants.

My DM is a pensioner. Shes eighty nine and didnt retire till Christmas twenty fifteen. Worked in the food industry in factories FULL TIME Shes also Italian I cant see this happening but if it does there will be LOTS of publicity I will make sure of it.

Im in North Essex but i remember this....

The Italians asked to apply to stay in post-Brexit UK

Elderly Italian women invited to work in the UK in the 1950s now have to apply to stay after Brexit.

I apologise. I didn't mean to appear to argue with you. I was attempting to clarify. But, yeah, it read a bit...bolshy.

This thread has raised my bolsh level.

Dippythedino · 22/09/2025 19:12

Would he also deport his French born girlfriend and German ex wife? Or just brown & black people as they don't fit in with his particular image of acceptable immigrants?

I'd also like to know how he's planning to plug the gap in higher tax & NI contributions made by the a large percentage of the people he's planning to deport? Most of the immigrants that I know are higher tax payers & I doubt that many of Farage's & Tommy Rs followers are higher tax payers. So, he'll have to plug the gap by raising the taxes & cutting the benefits of his loyal followers.....

That shows the "it's the only way to cut the massive benefit bill" whine up for the lie it is then. Since 70% of non-UK/Ireland UC claims are by EU nationals.

So, it is all about skin colour, despite Farage's limp protestations.

gotmyknickersinatwist · 22/09/2025 18:25

I'd actually like to see Farage in power, and not being able to put all his promises and policies into action.

I don't want him anywhere near a Govt. Once the door is open his less public facing friends will have access.

Crazyworldmum · 22/09/2025 19:20

He has since backtracked and said he didn’t mean people with settled status . Off course it still a lit if people . I doubt this could be achieved , he is so stupid he doesn’t even understand the implications of the rubbish he is claiming

CoreyFlood · 22/09/2025 19:22

It’s astonishing to me, when people trot out the phrase “ unskilled migrants” .
What does it mean? No degree? Earning under a certain amount? Who decides what is skilled and what is not?
Does the senior HR consultant have greater skill than the hospital porter? Good hospital porters have added more to the quality of my life, personally.
My husband ( EU migrant) has no qualifications due to having to work from being a teen. He’s worked so hard all his life, weekends, shifts, holidays. Never complained. His job is paid well under 60k but he improves the lives of many through his work and is very good at it. Who decides this criteria?

He knows. Like Trump he throws this stuff out there to attract the headlines eg Mexico paying for a wall. Then they go quiet but the idea is out there.

I haven’t seen a wage threshold reported but obviously there are separate visas for required low wage workers that is tailored to the roles we actually need.

I am amazed at the number of people who have an issue with parties trying to stop ‘benefit tourists’ moving here and not getting a job to contribute to society. It’s not like we’ve got lots of cash to spare atm - Rachel Reeves’ ‘black holes’ are getting numerous.

Whereas I'm amazed at the number of ill-informed muppets who are stridently against "something" that is a complete myth, all because they read it in the Daily Fail. They could of course look up the facts before commenting. Maybe that's too much like hard work.
