Random drunk stuck his head through my open living room window and scared me senseless

I know I’m not being unreasonable but just need to say this somewhere as I’m a bit speechless. I live on a road either just a few houses and a golf club. No pavement on the road and it’s a bendy country road so very rare we get people walking it, but it is just a few hundred meters before you get to the pavement and streets heading into the little town.

I’m up late working and there’s obviously some event on at the golf club that must have ended around 1am as I heard drunk people walking up to the town, happens every so often after an event at the club. It’s warm here so I’ve got the living room window open, and I was writing so looking down when I heard laughing outside and a noise, which was my window being pulled further open. I looked up as a man put his head through the window whilst making stupid laddy drunk noises and a gurning face. I did actually scream and jumped up. It all happened in seconds and I actually went towards the window, where there is a table by the window and it had some kid’s toys on it so I grabbed one of the plastic chuck and swung for the guy as he ducked his head back outside. I saw a him run back to a few other lads and they then ran off up the road.

It was obviously a “prank” by some drunk idiots but it’s really shaken me. I think I’ll be popping down to the golf club in the morning to have a word and see if I can find out whose party it was but it’s not like anything will come of it even if I can track down whoever had the invite list.

I’m just shaken and quite angry about it, not really sure what else to say.

I hope you’re you’re okay. Next time he might poke his head through a window where a big burly bloke is sitting on the couch.
I must admit I’m laughing because I read your thread title as Random Duck 🤣instead of random drunk.

This makes me think - what if there was a very large dog such as a Bully or some other stereotypically aggressive breed (sorry I’m a cat person so don’t know much about dogs) who happened to be laying there and attacked the man? That would just show them (the idiot leaning their head in to someone’s home) the consequences to be honest.

Well, the restaurant/bar manager from the club came round along with the club president to apologise again and check all was ok with the window and with us. The staff member has been spoken to, is very shame faced and his mum is furious with him as well! He won’t be passing his probation, but I’m actually feeling really shitty about that.
They had a word with one of the playing members who is in the police, and that’s how the mum found out as they went round and had an informal chat. He is under no illusions that what he did could be taken further and could have been bad for him etc. Not sure that would happen in a city but it’s a small town!

So, he’s lost his job and had a fright from local police. He’s only 19, has learned a lesson but I’m the one feel crappy about it.

OP I have just caught up on this post. Please do not feel bad for this person. I understand they’re only 19, and we all did stupid things in our younger days. But this is a life lesson for this person. If it wasn’t you, it would have been someone else. This person chose to act in this way, and actions have consequences.
This young person will be ok. They’ve made a silly, idiotic mistake but they’ll get another job and hopefully learn from this mistake.
I’d say it’s well justified considering what they did. This could have happened to a little old woman of 85 years old.
I understand you feeling a bit of remorse that they’ve lost their job, but this was a bit beyond normal silly drunkenness of singing in the street. I’m glad for you they’ve had to face the consequences!

Miaminmoo · 23/09/2025 23:55

I would have been scared and then furious, I’m so glad you have reported it to the club as it’s totally unacceptable. You have the right to feel safe in your own home.

Exactly. I highly doubt there’d be any sympathy for them either.

ThatBlackCat · 24/09/2025 06:49

Don't people have fly screens on their windows in the UK? Where I am it's rare that a window is without the mesh screen, and that it's even possible to stick a head through even a wide open window.

CalicoPusscat · 24/09/2025 06:51

@ThatBlackCat some do. I hate it when a fly gets in 🙁

I think it’s shaken me because I’m a single parent, so it’s just me and the kids. There isn’t another adult here. It’s not the drunk guy gurning at me that’s upsetting; it’s the thought of what would have happened if that had been a not drunk/idiot guy but something more serious.

That's scary but a window should not be able to have someone's head through like that. That means any burglar can climb through the window. If he can stick his head through the window, he can climb in through the window. You could have left the room for a minute, come back, and find he is standing in the room after climbing in. You really need to get an insect/fly screen on it.

ThatBlackCat · 24/09/2025 07:01

Bobiverse · 22/09/2025 08:28

Needs to move on from it? Bloody hell. It happened late last night. I’ve just come back in so am replying. It’s hardly like I’ve been banging on about it for a week.

You ever had a strange man just half climb his way into your house in the middle of the night? While you’re a single woman with two kids in bed. Why don’t you just move on from it. So easy.

You should have had a fly screen on it. No one should physically be able to half climb his way into your house. You should have had your window fixed so that's not possible. Especially as you're vulnerable with 2 kids. That would be hard to get over, but your house is clearly not secure and you need to fix it.

ThatBlackCat · 24/09/2025 07:06

Bobiverse · 23/09/2025 20:34

And the other staff got a telling off for being involved, and a lecture on the club being part of the community and not to screw that up with idiot behaviour. But it was the new kid who was the instigator/ring leader so nothing further happening with the other staff.

Well that's good that he has had consequences. Quite confident for a newbie wasn't he? I bet that's taken him down several pegs.

SparklyGlitterballs · 24/09/2025 07:07

Well done OP. Don't feel bad about the outcome. This lad has learnt an important life lesson the hard way and hopefully won't repeat his idiotic behaviour.

Try to not focus on the "cool girls" who tried to victim blame you on the thread. It's the reason I don't create my own posts on here. Even when you contribute on a thread you often get someone calling you out for stating a fairly innocent opinion. There's a lot of bitchy, unpleasant keyboard warriors on MN.

Christ almighty! Wtf should OP or anyone else do this? Smacks of victim blaming, the OP is perfectly entitled to have a window open, she’s explained why several times.

OneMoreProfiterole · 24/09/2025 07:17

Bobiverse · 22/09/2025 08:24

No, there is literally nothing else here.

We’re down a country road with no pavement. There are 4 houses dotted along and then the golf clubhouse. We are surrounded by fields out the front and to the side, then the golf course down the back. When you head along to leave our road, you get to the road into our tiny little town with a pavement. If someone I walking past my house and running off in the direction of town, then they’ve come from the golf club. Especially on a night when I know there’s been an event on as others have walked past throughout the night, when usually we have zero foot traffic.

Drunk dickhead aside, where you live sounds absolutely lovely.

It's not victim-blaming at all! She can still have the window open with the mesh fly screen on it!!!

Is it 'victim-blaming' to tell people to lock their house doors at night?

We don't have these screens in the UK. Millions of houses and bungalows and no fixed screens. It is just not a sensible suggestion.

How would a fly screen have prevented what happened? They aren’t a security measure. They are for keeping flys out, not drunk men. Ones we have used have just been velcroed on and would have popped if in the scenario described.

Fly screens are fixed over the window completely covering the window opening. You cannot physically pop your head through them. It is mesh installed over the opening. You cannot stick your head through solid mesh.

It’s just not really a thing that’s needed here and would feel very odd to have fly screens.

The most you might get is that in the four weeks of summer we get, some people might hang a temporary thing up with strands of plastic to keep flies out if you have a particularly bad issue with them

These are the types of windows I have. They can swing right out; very very common in the UK.

Hardly anyone has fly screens. I’ve literally never been in the house of someone with fly screens, in my whole life here.

I don’t need to do anything. If I leave my windows open while I’m out or asleep and someone burgles me then that’s because I gave them an easy way in. If I’m sitting in my living room, music playing and lights on, with my window open an inch or so, then I’m doing literally nothing wrong.

V glad to read your updates. It's a good thing that there's a serious consequence for the young man. It's good for him to have a wake up call and good for society that some actual adults have acted and done the right thing.

We have a major problem with male behaviour in society. This is trivial compared to your incident but I too am a lone parent. I took my child out for a pub lunch at the weekend. Place I hadn't tried before. Only one table was occupied. We were looking at menus and my child was seated (I was about to sit).... And two men came over and told us loudly and abruptly that was their table. I apologised and said I didn't realise it was reserved and we moved. As we did so the other man laughed and said his friend was a liar. So just a bit of a laugh to make a mum and her kid get out of their way. I was so pissed off with their behaviour we left. I'm not putting up with it. It's trivial I know but it's horrible.

Hopefully that young man won't grow up to be a dick like that or worse.

Yes, it’s 100% her fault that some random drunk decided he had the right to open her partially opened window and trespass on her property - perhaps she should just put metal grills on all her windows and be done with it 🙄tell me you’ve missed the point without telling me you’ve missed the point. Nobody has the right to walk on to your property and touch your open window much less stick their head through it. Regardless of whether the window is open or not?! Someone get OP stripped naked and a let’s all shout ‘shame’ at her as she walks the streets of her local town 🤷🏼‍♀️
