People talk about Scotland as if it's a county. Nobody says it's cold here in England. They say the South East, or Yorkshire or whatever. Scotland's a reasonable size, with counties and regions like everywhere.

Edinburgh then. Happy?

Edinburgh has reputation for cold weather.

Still 18° in the North West and forecast to stay like that for another week. No heating here at all but blankets are out and the winter duvet is on. Hot water bottle will be out soon too and I can't wait!!

Is that 18 as the highest temperature? It’s unlikely to be that for more than an hour tops. What’s the low temp? And at what time does it drop significantly? And at what t8me does it increase again?

Tiredofwhataboutery · 27/09/2025 12:31

Freezing in Perthshire too if it helps. Possibly a helpful Scot or two could let us know any toasty spots.

justasking111 · 27/09/2025 12:32

West coast of Wales not too cold here, some mini jet stream east of the mountains. But it's damper. My towels aren't really drying after a shower. Otherwise managing with the log burner.

Interesting that you turned it off in March. It's something I've noticed. Some posters who turn it on early ie Sep, also turn it off early. We turn ours on in Nov, but don't turn it off until Mid April at earliest, often 1st May.

Dont you turn on and off with the temperature? It was really warm in early spring this year. This is why I don’t turn mine on or off at all. It sits with its thermostat all year and comes on if it’s cold enough. I don’t care what the calendar says, I care what the thermometer says.

Baggyit · 27/09/2025 12:34

Not nearly cold enough for the heat to be on.

You'll need to humidify. There's things you can put on radiator and fill with water We don't have the radiator on in the bedroom for that reason.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/09/2025 12:40

im cold so put heating on. I pay same all year round to build up credit

sometimes just having on for 30m makes a huge diff to warm house up

for some strange reason I woke really cold at 3am. Nose freezing so put heating on - it said it was 18 but felt more like 8

south east

I think it's because we get used to having it off, and it takes a long time before it starts to seem cold. Then we get used to having it on. Yes, there is some consideration of the temp, hence sometimes turning it off in April and sometimes a bit later. Yes, many posters leave it on thermostat year round, but many others turn it off for summer. Otherwise we wouldn't keep getting these threads because there would be no such thing as turning it on.

It’s 12 degrees here on the west coast so not toasty but definitely not freezing. Still 19 degrees in the house so the heating hasn’t been on yet.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 27/09/2025 12:49

Freezing is possibly an exaggeration it’s 11 degrees but it’s thst sort of damp cold and I slready feel like I have flu.

Where you are, in your particular house, with your particular sensitivity to cold.
I do wish people would stop with blanket statements like this about whether it’s cold enough.

justasking111 · 27/09/2025 13:16

We lived for 20 years in a stone built farmhouse top of a hill 600 feet above sea level. The car thermometer read two degrees warmer when I drove a mile down to the main road in the winter.

The house was lovely and cool in the summer with two foot thick walls. In the winter you needed the log burner as well as the oil heating on morning and evening to get cosy.

Incidentally it's cheaper to heat with oil now than gas or electric especially if you purchase at the right time. A month ago it was 10p a litre less than it was yesterday. We also buy our logs in the spring, much cheaper split and stack to dry out.all summer.

It's the damp that gets us living on the west coast

I’m also in the NW, near Stockport and my heating came on this morning so it must have dropped below 18°.

I don’t go by dates but by how cold it is. My heating is set to come on if it drops below 18° during the day and 10° overnight although in the warmer months I might move the daytime temp down if the direct sun is heating up my lounge.

If I’m cold though, I over ride the thermostat and put the heating on for an hour or so. My bungalow tends to get damp and I’m anxious not to cause long term problems. I’m lucky though in that I can afford to put the heating on.

I woke up freezing the other night too, the nights have been in single figures though. I'm South East also.

I asked DH for the second time to run a test on the central heating to ensure that the radiators work. When he deigns to put them on post October 1st. The second year we were here it all went tits up he had to call in the plumber who had to order a part. So it was cold and plumber was backed up with cries of help.

DH denies all knowledge of the plumber being called in eight years ago. I remember it well. All the twonk has to do is fire it up, check the radiators and boiler are behaving nicely. 🤬

WilfredsPies · 27/09/2025 15:26

It’s not feeling very cold here (south east and peri menopausal hot flushes, but DH is still just wearing shorts, so not just me)

This is the time of year that gets me through the summer. I live in a sweat box HA flat that is unbearable in the summer. Imagine it’s 30degrees outside, you’re wearing your winter coat and you’ve got the heating on full blast. That’s what it feels like morning, noon and night during the summer months, irrespective of when the curtains and windows are opened or closed. It’s horrendous. This time of year is the payoff. I have a pre payment meter, so continue topping it up all summer, then come late November ish, when it does feel cold enough, I can afford to have it on whenever I want, without worrying about cost. I would rather have a better balance, but it does mean that the colder months don’t put me into fuel poverty.

Why does he need to do it? Just switch it on yourself and see if it works. If you have your regular service there shouldn’t be an issue, but it’s not hard to check. I live alone and seem to manage.

I’m just pointing out that saying ‘it’s 18’ is a bit meaningless and doesn’t in any way suggest it’s too warm for heating. It could well be in single digits morning and evening.

This is very true. In July when we have longer hours of daylight the sun has got to work by 6am and by 9am it can be toasty. Temperature does not start easing off until well into the evening.

At this time of year though, although it might hit 17c or 18c at 2pm, it's taken all day to get there and it will be a lot colder in the evening.
