I presume you do not have a household income of 170K.

Glorious sunshine today house warm. But jakers by 7pm it was freezing. We've just lit the log burner. The bricks and mortar aren't holding the heat now I guess

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 24/09/2025 20:46

I did put mine on in the lounge tonight for our elderly greyhound.

JHound · 25/09/2025 11:55

My house is electricity only. Holding off for as long as possible!

That must be wildly expensive. Electricity is the worst. Mine is x3 price of a unit of gas.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 25/09/2025 19:41

It's not even 8 pm and we are all going to bed under duvets. It's not that cold, but the autumn transition makes it feel cold. We will get used to it no doubt!

What temp is it in your home? Do you not have any heating?

Slave123 · 26/09/2025 01:06

Im in Scotland and I don't put my heating on as they don't work properly haven't for the past 2 years. And because they are storage heaters they cost a fortune so socks and jumpers for us sometime gloves to

OhNoNotSusan · 26/09/2025 07:00

18 degrees currently
not cold enough for me to put the heating on

basherlass · 26/09/2025 07:02

I work from home and have a little heater on in my room. It's a fraction of the cost of putting the heating on. Not cold enough for heating yet!

StrongLikeMamma · 26/09/2025 07:58

Still not cold enough in this house

Can I ask what heater you use? The one we have in our home office seems to eat the electricity!

We're electric only too, but the newer high heat retention storage heaters are ok. They're programmable, so heat is released when you want it, and they have individual temperature dials. I put 2 of ours set to give a little heat in the morning and a little in the evening, during a predicted temp dip last week, and have since left them on - they don't actually kick in if the weather isn't cold enough though. We've no mains gas here and I detest coal/wood.

Our old storage heaters didn't work either, but we got new modern ones and they're much more user friendly. It's worth looking in to see if any grants exist in your area to help with updating the heaters.

I'm electric only as well. I have a heat pump and proper radiators, though so no idea if it's expensive or not. Previous house was gas/electric but that was 7 years ago and prices have shot up in that time.

Won't ever buy anywhere with storage heaters as I just have memories of my brother's flat being cold amd damp.

Modern storage heaters are much better tbh.
I do miss my old GCH, from previous houses, but no mains gas here and our house isn't suitable for a heat pump.

Heating on for about half an hour, morning & evening this week (first time since about March), just to get the sudden chill out (South East here)- hot water bottles though, even if we kick them out before getting into bed - they are wonderful ( and no I am not 95, lol). Don't ever be cold in your own home, layer up, duvets when in living room (plus water bottles, lol) - and maybe change duvet covers, its like a work out & you may have to open windows afterwards..... xx⚡

JMSA · 27/09/2025 06:15

Definitely cold enough for heating in Scotland.

Foolsgold74 · 27/09/2025 09:36

Still 18° in the North West and forecast to stay like that for another week. No heating here at all but blankets are out and the winter duvet is on. Hot water bottle will be out soon too and I can't wait!!

Nope, not where I am - still 19 degrees indoors! It’s my first winter in my new house and I’m quite surprised it’s as temperate as it is tbh.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 27/09/2025 09:57

It's 15.5 degrees in our house today. I am feeling it.

sashh · 27/09/2025 10:00

I'm in socks and a cardigan with a heated throw.

People talk about Scotland as if it's a county. Nobody says it's cold here in England. They say the South East, or Yorkshire or whatever. Scotland's a reasonable size, with counties and regions like everywhere.

Interesting that you turned it off in March. It's something I've noticed. Some posters who turn it on early ie Sep, also turn it off early. We turn ours on in Nov, but don't turn it off until Mid April at earliest, often 1st May.
