I stayed with my UK born&bred DS in his adopted NZ home.

"We olnly put the heating on after x date" said his fucking stupid partner.
DS was a bit puzzled when we moved to a warm , comfortable nearby hotel.

Strikingitlucky · 22/09/2025 19:50

We caved last week and have been putting it the heating on an hour or two in the morning and evenings.
We are in South Wales and yesterday it was the first time we seen the sun after nearly fortnight.

JLou08 · 22/09/2025 19:57

I've not considered using the heating, I've not even had the big coat out yet. I'm in the North West.

North West of England or Scotland?

ChicJoker · 22/09/2025 19:59

I live in a fully electric freezing cold farm house. Had to have it on most of the year so far. Dreading the bills for my first winter here. Miserable.

padso · 21/09/2025 20:33

I caved

Me too…… we “ live “ at the back of the house which is cold….if we lived at the front of the house ( where our kitchen is) it’s warm all the time …heyho…

Ammophila · 22/09/2025 20:01

I put the heating on for a couple of hours this morning to take the chill off the house, but then it was warm enough not to need it again.

The heating only goes on properly in October, or later, whenever it feels properly cold. But first, extra jumpers, thicker socks etc.

GoodOldTrayBake · 22/09/2025 20:04

I just put mine on. Life’s too short to be cold.

Startingover25 · 22/09/2025 20:10

I'm also a 'the heating doesn't come on until November' person. If I were better off financially, that wouldn't be the case. I'm under my heated throw at the moment and wearing Primark fur-lined leggings. I'll be using gift vouchers towards buying a dehumidifier to take the edge off in winter.

England.

Mumwithbaggage · 22/09/2025 20:11

Mine goes on when I tutor from home (only needed once so far this autumn). Otherwise I don't really sit still and the blankets, heated or otherwise, are fab for telly watching. I just don't want to spend the money so wear layers!

Ladygardenerinderby · 22/09/2025 20:11

Been gorgeous here in east mids today til about 4pm and then it suddenly dropped, I was shivering so I lit the woodburner in the lounge shut the doors n it’s toasty but the rest of the house is really cold . Hate living like this too . Lucky as hubby’s a gardener so we get free wood , feel blessed

Much as I hate to like Primark, those lined leggings are great! A dehumidifier should help too, ours definitely makes the air feel less chilly and helps dry clothes too.

Are there any particular dehumidifiers you would recommend? I’ve never used them but I’m thinking I should probably start.

I don’t really understand why people get reluctant to put the heating on.

Yes, heating comes with a cost but presumably you have to cut back elsewhere to afford it? Like maybe it’s because I’m in my 20s, and energy bills have been high since I had my own place, but I just feel it’s a cost you factor in as opposed to just not putting the heating on.

personally I invested in electric blankets so usually I just turn those on, as opposed to the radiators

Because heating costs have soared recently, and lots of people are struggling to put food on the table, let alone to pay for heating when it's so early in the season.

We're very lucky that we can afford to put our heating on but I know lots of families who aren't so lucky and genuinely have to choose between food and heat.

If you can only afford say, £400 to heat your house each winter, you're going to wait until it's really bitter outside before putting it on, not when it's still relatively warm out.

Retiredfromearlyyears · 22/09/2025 20:25

I'm in Glasgow. It was only 4 degrees here by bedtime . I had no heating on, but at bedtime we had long hot water bottles. Socks on and my fur bed rug over the duvet. Toasty! I slept through until 7am. It's 11 degrees outside just now. We have the fire on in the sitting room. Heating will come on at 7am tomorrow until 9am. However at night time we just switch it on manually,if we need it! We also have Heated throws and Sherpa Fleeces if its cold earlier in the day. That and the " Guid Scotch Broth" keep you warm and saves on the bills.

Thingscouldntgetanyworse · 22/09/2025 20:27

Put the heating on.

my mum never put her heating on. She was in debt with her gas/electric (£200ish) so became really stingy with the heating. I hated seeing her cold.

she died a few months ago, unrelated, from cancer. Do you know what happened with her EDF debt? It was written off. Because once you’re dead, they don’t care. I wish she’d put her heating on everyday.

Put your heating on. Life is too short and cruel to be cold in your own house.

sgtmajormum · 22/09/2025 20:28

I'm in the South East. It was 7 degrees this morning outside but over 18 degrees inside so no need for heating.
I always try and hold out til late October before putting on heating.

I might pop it on for an hour occasionally to keep the damp out but definitely not properly on until the clocks change is my aim.

CantBreathe90 · 22/09/2025 20:29

We have ours on. Told Shell they can have £150 per month and no more, because we honestly cannot afford it. But I'm not sitting in the cold all winter either, with the kids getting ill and the house going mouldy.

If people are already stretched in the summer months, where do you suppose they 'cut back' to afford heat in the winter?

Athomewithmydog · 22/09/2025 20:32

Sneaked mine on while the heating police (husband) went to work. Go for it.

Notadramallama · 22/09/2025 20:33

I'm in Lancashire and a few times recently the house has been 16 degrees when I've come in from work so the heating has been on for a short while.

PlasticineKing · 22/09/2025 20:33

I love how on the first page there’s people declaring it’s 21 degrees where they live without consideration of other people’s locations 😂 it astounds me how so many people can’t see beyond the end of their own nose!

My house is always on the cool side, even in summer. I live on the east coast of Scotland, and WFH in a north facing room that gets no sun even in summer. I’ve had my small oil heater on today and one day last week. Definitely needed for me.

This definitely makes a big difference. I’m on the west coast but my house is mainly south facing, probably explains why it was still 20 degrees in the house today!
