I let the thermostat have its own way. Sunday 14th it decided to wake up from hibernation.

My entire childhood & teenage years were spent being cold for 6 months of the year. Now, I'd make a choice between heat & food if I had to, & heat would just about win.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 22/09/2025 18:59

We plan to avoid putting the heating on this year except for an hour every several days to ensure the pipes are still running properly. Old Victorian house and the last 2 years we shut the downstairs down and we live out of 1 communal room and out bedrooms.

ICE on the windscreen on 22 September? Could you please tell me where you are all living? I'm in the north of NI and people are cutting their grass, bees are still buzzing about, most people are walking about in short sleeves...

I'm in Cumrbia and my car said six degrees this morning at 8.30 when I went to work - but honestly it didn't feel as cold as that, especially not in the sunshine. Saying that, though, there were cars with frosted windscreens in the shade.

Edited

Was 2 degrees at9am on walk to school but with wind chill felt colder.

We're right on the south coast (a couple of minutes from the sea in West Sussex) and it's still warm enough not to need the heating on...which is a good job as currently the only heating we have in our not very well insulated Georgian cottage is a wood burner! OH wanted to light it yesterday but I told him he was being ridiculous.

I have put socks on the past few days, though and had a hot water bottle in the bed to take the chill off last night.

We're mid way through a fairly major DIY renovation project and I'm hoping the new boiler will be installed by the beginning of November 🤞

Chinsupmeloves · 22/09/2025 19:03

Have literally just put it on! Just to take the edge off quite cold up north today. Xx

MeandT · 22/09/2025 19:03

Whoever said "Our rule is not to be competitive under-heaters".... send me a badge, I'm joining your club!

limescale · 22/09/2025 19:04

Essex/Suffolk border here and it's been lovely. In the sun traps it's been t.shirt weather, but there is a bite in the wind and now the sun is going down it looks like it'll be a cool night. Not a thought of heating though! I've moved from my evening lounge shorts and vest to my thick dressing gown.

Idontpostmuch · 22/09/2025 19:04

Aha here it is. Every Sep or Oct. Someone on MN asks about heating. No, not on yet. Not until Nov.

Blablibladirladada · 22/09/2025 19:04

Yeah, autumn is defo a “put a jumper on, double socks and where are the warm sleepers” season…no heating just yet. I did take out the warm duvets though…

House is on 18/19C so it will happen when it will happen …

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 22/09/2025 19:05

I'm still sleeping with the windows open and the 3 tog summer duvet.

It's enough to pop a jumper on and some wooly socks if I feel chilly at the moment. But if I'm cold enough, I will put my heating on. I refuse to be cold in my own home.

Doodlingsquares · 22/09/2025 19:09

cardibach · 21/09/2025 20:38

That’s a stupid rule. What if it’s below zero in October but warmer in November?
Heating should be decided by temperature, not date.

Agreed. Ive never understood these people who pick an arbitrary date and say the heating cant go on before it. You can have a really cool september followed by a much milder october! Its just a bit unintelligent really. 15 degrees in october is not suddenly magically colder than 15 degrees was in September 😂

PetuniaT · 22/09/2025 19:09

We caved in today (22nd Sept). We're on the NW coast of England and it was cold but worse was all the rain we've had over the last weekend.

atinydropofcherrysherry · 22/09/2025 19:09

I love being warm, so yes, heating is coming twice a day and sometimes I put in on even when my husband is out

JustMeAndTheFish · 22/09/2025 19:13

Mine’s been on the odd hour … but I did come back from a very delightful 35 degrees in Central Asia on Friday. That’s my excuse.

Crazyworldmum · 22/09/2025 19:14

I had mine on yesterday for 2 hours . I’m in the highlands it was 7 c sensation of -1 yesterday

Plastictreees · 22/09/2025 19:17

It was still 20 degrees in my old house on the west coast of Scotland today. Definitely no need for heating!

MiddleAgedDread · 22/09/2025 19:18

ManteesRock · 22/09/2025 18:53

Went down to 4°C overnight but I'm under my duvet then so don't feel it. Was up to 12°C before the kids left for school this morning and was 18°C by lunchtime!
I'm still in shorts and t-shirt we're made of strong stuff up north!

I’ll put money on me living further north than you do 🙄

lessglittermoremud · 22/09/2025 19:19

Our house is currently 17.5 degrees in general areas, I’ve got a jumper on but everyone else is in t-shirts….
Once it drops to 16 degrees I tend to put on constant set to 18 degrees so it kicks in if it drops below that.
We are in credit with our utility company so I’m not too worried at the moment but we are definitely more mindful of putting it on.

I might live even further north than a lot of the posters on here too! 😁

padso · 21/09/2025 20:42

How do people know how hot the inside of their house is?

They look at the thermostat.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/09/2025 19:26

@cardibach yep some posters sound like my great grandmother with the ‘never cast a clout till May is out’ hence them sweating like mad on buses in coats in a warm April/ May

Ilovetravelling · 22/09/2025 19:33

Heated throws are definitely the way to go if your chilly at home but don't want to put the heating on yet. They can be expensive for a good one but well worth it. They are cheap to run too. Mine is a Dreamland Intelliheat with several heat settings. Your feet will never be cold again.

Don't you have to go through the downstairs to get to the upstairs?

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 21/09/2025 20:35

No heating on till november that's the rule. That's what extra jumpers are for.

Not in my house. I pay the bills and if I feel cold I will put the heating on, even if I have to economise on something else.
