I never have it turned off. Hate being cold.

I don’t really understand why people get reluctant to put the heating on.

Yes, heating comes with a cost but presumably you have to cut back elsewhere to afford it? Like maybe it’s because I’m in my 20s, and energy bills have been high since I had my own place, but I just feel it’s a cost you factor in as opposed to just not putting the heating on.

personally I invested in electric blankets so usually I just turn those on, as opposed to the radiators

Agree. In my experience, people who ‘can’t afford to put the heating on’ can usually afford other things such as foreign holidays. It’s simply a choice about what to spend money on.

I don’t doubt that there is a tiny minority who genuinely can’t afford it, but not as many as make out on MN!

Middlemarch123 · 22/09/2025 20:44

I hate a warm bedroom. I have a window open all year round. It can be snowing and I still have a top window open an inch or two. I’d rather throw an extra blanket on, than sleep in an airless room. Find it suffocating.

Put the heating on.

my mum never put her heating on. She was in debt with her gas/electric (£200ish) so became really stingy with the heating. I hated seeing her cold.

she died a few months ago, unrelated, from cancer. Do you know what happened with her EDF debt? It was written off. Because once you’re dead, they don’t care. I wish she’d put her heating on everyday.

Put your heating on. Life is too short and cruel to be cold in your own house.

This!

Lifes too short to be cold and damp 🙁 Worrying about dehumidifiers and the like.

Just put the heating on!

nannyl · 22/09/2025 20:51

We had a frost this morning but I havent put the heating on yet.

I try and wait to after my childrens scout camp (this coming weekend, same weekend every year)

Upstairs has got as low as 15c so far, but after a sunny afternoon, right now it's 17.7 up there.

I will try and wait until October before it goes on constantly (controlled by hive) until May

Middlemarch123 · 22/09/2025 20:56

I also do this weird thing, where I sleep on my side and have to have my top leg on top of the covers, I can’t be covered completely. I remember my mum said I was like this as a baby. So if it’s really cold, I’ll have loads of covers with one leg on top. Told you it’s weird!

It’s not always that simple if you’re on a pre-pay meter or similar, or if you have the energy companies hounding you for money.

IronWoman · 22/09/2025 21:00

We haven't had the heating on for 8 years now. The warm air heating broke and it's so old, no one can mend it. We manage by wearing layers and small electrical blankets for our feet and hands.
We've survived.

LaurieFairyCake · 22/09/2025 21:02

Apparently it’s only 10 degrees outside but it’s 23 in my sitting room, too early in the year for us for heating. Hopefully be November before it’s needed.

That is totally miserable. You have no heating whatsoever?

TrickyD · 22/09/2025 21:07

Heating not on, but cosy fire in the sitting room.

Having a dehumidifier can really help in houses where the air feels 'damper'. They can be used alone or alongside heating and will help when drying washing inside (not everyone has space for a tumble dryer or even wants one).

Tastaturen · 22/09/2025 21:11

Plastictreees · 22/09/2025 20:19

Are there any particular dehumidifiers you would recommend? I’ve never used them but I’m thinking I should probably start.

Meaco brand is quite highly thought of, and that's what we have. It has low, high, auto and also a clothes drying function (which gives out a little heat too). Clothes dry faster even when not specifically on clothes drying option though.

Have you looked into the possibility of a grant toward replacing it? We had broken storage heaters at one point and it was miserably cold. This is partly why we use the new ones if we need it! The dehumidifier helped dry the air/clothes a bit but actual heat is needed too when it'sreally baltic.

IronWoman · 22/09/2025 21:16

WhereAreMyAirpods we have a tiny heater, but haven't used it. If it gets too cold we'll put it on for a couple of hours.

No heating on till november that's the rule. That's what extra jumpers are for.

That’s our rule too!

Yes I understand that, but having to dehumidify your house because it’s damp due to a lack of heat. Nobody should live like that!

IronWoman · 22/09/2025 21:20

Tastaturen I did look into it a few years ago but I was in and out of hospital so it never happened.

I mean it’s not a tiny minority who struggle to heat their houses. The families I work with don’t have holidays - they ration the pre payment meters because they don’t have much money.
I had a few years where I couldn’t heat my house - house rich cash poor. A old and big detached house too so it costs a fortune! There were just basic bills and brutal economies one of which was heating. It was shit. My roof went and the damp levels rotted my bed. I now have a dehumidifier and use heating but those years must have reset my thermostat as I still class this as warm.

flobalobble · 22/09/2025 21:31

Heating on in this house, genuinely don’t care what month it is TBH ! Only on for a couple of hours.

Ihadtheonearmedbanditfever · 22/09/2025 21:31

We don't have arbitrary rules about temperature or waiting until a certain month before the heating is allowed to go in.

If the house is chilly, is time to heat it a bit. I don't care if it's June or December.

It's not been cold enough since March for the heating here however.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 22/09/2025 21:37

Heated towel rails on, heating not

Unfortunately some people cannot afford as much heating as they'd like. Dehumidifiers also help dry clothes when it's raining but not cold enough for much heating.

November works for us, September/ October don’t tend to be very cold and I love winter clothes.
