I had to put ours on low as it was just too cold! We are in Scotland in a fairly large, ground floor flat which does get cold. All electric so our heating bill can go up to £400 in dec and jan ! I can’t bear to be cold though

Horsie · 22/09/2025 18:25

Waiting until November is really spartan, in my book!

Just had an update from my energy provider. The standing charge for both gas and electricity has gone up by £7 PER DAY!! £210 a month before I even turn anything on!😡😡 Robbing bar stewards.

Are you sure? My standing charge has just gone up to 80.5p per day. That’s a (roughly) 8p per day increase. Add on the rate change and my provider reckons I’ll pay about £30 more for electricity and £12.85 for gas per year (based on last years usage).

In many posters’ case it does, because their post isn’t just that statement. It includes clearly judgemental language about being ‘far’ too hot in other people’s houses and people ‘swanning about’ in inappropriate clothing. I’ve no idea why those posters care, but they do.

Also posts about how heating is "vile" and how anything over 13c is unbearable.

Heating on in September when the temperature is still in double figures?? Why??

Because the house is cold? It was 1° here this morning. If we'd been in our old house (Victorian semi) we'd have definitely had the heating on today. However, we're now in a new build, so the temp is fine, even with the window vents open.

Highest temp we've had today was 14 degrees and it's down to 4 overnight. The thermostat in my living room hasn't been above 18 degrees all day, even with the heating having been on for an hour and the sun on it all morning.

Isinglass20 · 22/09/2025 18:33

I’ve had to close the windows today and realised they need washing 😕

That's ridiculous, are you fixed into their contract or can you change? My gas and electric standing charge is 73p per day!!

My husband put our heating on this morning. Had to point out:

  1. he was wearing a tshirt and shorts.
  2. the sofa he was sitting on was pushed right up against the radiator therefore absorbing all the heat.
  3. the thermostat read 19°.

It’s usually me who is cold but I switched it off and told him to put a jumper on. Felt smug.

I’m holding out until at least October unless there are wet clothes to dry.

JJMama · 22/09/2025 18:37

Nowhere near cold enough yet!!

I don't think you of all people can comment on 'tone' after your comments on this thread... 'medicate it' didn't come across well.

H that was in response to people blaming everything on menopause. It doesn't make you permanently hot, so it was a bit pointless. I was nice about it the first time I said it, but people kept saying the same thing over and over.

MibsXX · 22/09/2025 18:38

1 degree here for the past 3 mornings, and not trying not to have it on, simply not been able to afford any heating oil yet!

Philcom55 · 22/09/2025 18:39

I went all last Winter without any heating but it meant staying in bed with lots of blankets some days. I must admit it gets harder the older I get - especially now I'm in my seventies. Hopefully I'll get the fuel allowance back this year, though it won't pay for more than a few weeks' electricity.

cardibach · 22/09/2025 18:41

warmapplepies · 22/09/2025 16:37

How can you accurately tell someone's tone via a screen?

When I say "most people have their house far too warm" that's just my opinion. It's not a judgement on them as a person in any way Confused

Then phrase it as an opinion rather than a fact. That’s what makes the tone sound judgemental. ‘Most people have their houses to warm for me’ sould sound like an opinion.
And I take on board I started doing a similar thing with regard to menopause posts, but for most people that’s something they can make better without reference to heating or lack of it. The way I and others feel the cold can’t.

November is when we start. Wouldn’t think of it yet. Am ooop north

Ah, they breed them tough oop north!

HeadNorth · 22/09/2025 18:45

I’m in central Scotland but haven’t felt the need to put the heating on yet - our house heats up amazingly with the sun and retains heat well - we are well situated for the winter sun and have great insulation. My office was bathed in sunshine when I worked from home today.

In general, I prefer a house on the cooler side. Looking at the forecast I can’t see us needing heating on for at least another week or so.

I put mine on today for first time..but l came home from Greece two days ago where it was 33 degrees... l pay monthly .. the same amount all year round.. so im always in credit by time Autumn/ winter.. so l can afford to have it on whenever... plus l became an OAP last year.. missed out on the fuel allowance...but will receive it this year.
But I'll also take an holiday to Lanzarote/ Fueterventura for some hot weather too in November and February.

I could have written most of this apart from the Greek trip. I overpay and am well in credit for the winter. That said left a chilly UK last week for a couple weeks in the canaries then 5 weeks here over Christmas and new year. I got my pension last year and missed the WF payment as well. Given up caring about the government and it's shit treatment of pensioners so stay out of the UK as much as allowed and spending my pension where it's warm and cheap to live.

Lavenderbluex · 22/09/2025 18:48

I’ve had it on this morning (North East). I have two young dc. If it was just me I wouldn’t have put it on.

friendsDisUnited · 22/09/2025 18:48

I scrapped ice off my car to do the school run this morning which was all the permission I needed to put the heating on when I got back. It’s now set to come on for 1 hour in the morning which won’t break the bank.

AInightingale · 22/09/2025 18:51

ICE on the windscreen on 22 September? Could you please tell me where you are all living? I'm in the north of NI and people are cutting their grass, bees are still buzzing about, most people are walking about in short sleeves...

Itdoesntmatteranyway · 22/09/2025 18:52

My husband has a heart condition and feels the cold easily and struggles to regulate his temperature. I am perimenopausal and can’t cool down. The heating arguments have already begun! We’re Yorkshire.

Went down to 4°C overnight but I'm under my duvet then so don't feel it. Was up to 12°C before the kids left for school this morning and was 18°C by lunchtime!
I'm still in shorts and t-shirt we're made of strong stuff up north!

They had snow in Scotland overnight and a frost in the North.

I didn't realise you were in charge of how people write on the internet - my bad.

alpenguin · 22/09/2025 18:59

Relented and put it on today. Was hoping to wait until oct but it got too cold. Seemed warm outside but it was only 13/14 inside.
