We've given in and had 18 at night and 20 for a couple of hours in the evening.

HardyMauveQuoter · 22/09/2025 18:01

I've had to have the heating on because my husband is a cold arse 🙄

catlover123456789 · 22/09/2025 18:01

It got to 6c here last night and I woke up cold. This September has been unusually cold.
My house has been fitted with electric heating and can be controlled per room, I have put it on a couple of times in the evening in the living room, but not bothered elsewhere yet. I've noticed the towels are not drying so the next thing to put on will be the towel rail in the bathroom.
My set-up is quite unconventional but it works well for a house where one room needs heating most of the time (because I work remotely), and the other rooms only occasionally.

Soberinthecity · 22/09/2025 18:02

Not yet, but I hear you. I eke it out for as long as possible. I live in a Victorian house which is really poorly insulated and when it gets to the point where I’m wearing a dressing gown over lots of layers and a hot water bottle and I’m freezing I give in and put the heating on. It’s ridiculous. Never did I imagine myself at the age of 54 being frightened to heat my home. it makes me so cross.

PurpleYarnivore · 22/09/2025 18:02

I’ve not had more than a T-shirt on ( ok, put a light jacket on to do school run this am ) and our windows are still on the latch open as have been since May , still on my 1 tog summer duvet ! Never put heating on before November here ( in Midlands )

paddlinglikecrazy · 22/09/2025 18:03

Caved this morning & stuck it on timer for couple of hours am & pm if temp dips below 19 in the house. It came on this morning but the house warmed up and won’t come on tonight.
we never need the heating on upstairs though, always warm enough for sleeping year round.

catlover123456789 · 22/09/2025 18:04

Heated blankets are also an awesome way to keep warm if you don't want to heat the whole house. I live under them in winter.

DoubleShotEspresso · 22/09/2025 18:04

It’s been chilly where we are today. Caved and put heating on for half an hour mid morning as homeschooling here…
By mid afternoon it was glorious outside, much less chilly. We have fluffy blankets rolled up in storage baskets by sofas and are very much “autumn ready”, extra layers and our tumble drier helps warm tbings up a but, but our house is very old with high ceilings, so we really feel season changes.
Haven’t used it yet, but also have a little oil filled radiator that we move about the house as needed.

Granof5 · 22/09/2025 18:09

Yes I put the heating on today it’s currently 10° here

Symposium123 · 22/09/2025 18:10

Not sure where you are, OP, but it’s very warm in England. We had the air con on over the weekend.

Starlight7080 · 22/09/2025 18:12

Not the heating but I have got in and put my fire on . Its super cosy . Quite chilly here today

Air conditioning? Seriously? I am in London and it’s been sunny but also quite chilly. Max of 15 degrees yesterday.

Strawberrypicnic · 22/09/2025 18:13

I can just feel the nasty nip in the air in all the houses of the competitive no heating people

MiddleAgedDread · 22/09/2025 18:13

It was 13.6 degrees in my living room this morning, the heating went on for an hour and I've been wfh with the heated blanket over me.

MD86 · 22/09/2025 18:13

Had the woodburner lit for the last three evenings. Temperature dropped from 32°C to 17°C at the weekend. And it's raining

staringatthesun · 22/09/2025 18:13

I haven't found it cold enough for the heating to be on yet. We have lots of cosy blankets for the sofa for when it starts getting cooler in the evenings.

Teddybear23 · 22/09/2025 18:17

Just had an update from my energy provider. The standing charge for both gas and electricity has gone up by £7 PER DAY!! £210 a month before I even turn anything on!😡😡 Robbing bar stewards.

EverythingElseIsTaken · 22/09/2025 18:18

My heating system is never turned ‘off’ it is on a timer and thermostat system. The first I know of the heating coming ‘on’ will be one morning when I go into the bathroom and feel some heat in the radiator. Heating is timed to come on at 0530 if the temperature is below 17 degrees. The house thermostat says it is currently 20 degrees in the house and my outdoor thermometer shows 16.5 degrees.

Catsknowbest · 21/09/2025 20:40

Always makes me 🙄 this. Our seasons are up the creek yet people still insist on this no heating until....as if its 30 years ago.

I think people are reluctant to put their heating on mainly due to the cost. Thats the reason im holding out as long as possible anyway, as its just too expensive. im dreading my winter fuel bill this year. Its such a shame that having a warm home has become such a luxury in the UK.

Redragtoabull · 22/09/2025 18:19

In our house, if you're cold, stop walking around in battyriders and crop tops, get some proper clothes on, start with a T and some light pj bottoms and as it gets colder migrate to jumpers, socks, a blanket as the heating only I pay for goes on in November, as late in November as possible, no wriggle room for a warm room here, and I earn well, it's not a stingy thing, it's not having heating as a kid, getting warm by the hob as there was no money for a cozy pj set for £10 from Shein

Wrenjay · 22/09/2025 18:20

We are in our late 70s/early 80s and are in credit on our fuel. Consequently we have the heating on when we feel chilly. Both of us have been cold as children and when we were first married, but regard warmth as a necessity now in older age.

that cannot be right surely?

OddBalling · 22/09/2025 18:23

No heating on here yet either, it's currently 14 degrees (6:30pm) but trying to wait until October before it goes on. We're having a wood fire stove installed next month which I hope will keep the ground floor warm, and my son's room, which the chimney breast goes through. We have an electric heater in the living room but haven't needed to use it yet. I have been using a blanket upstairs though in the evenings when I'm reading on top of the bed covers.

It's a sad existence but having the heating on bare minimum as it is costs a small fortune 🥶

ManteesRock · 22/09/2025 18:23

Heating on in September when the temperature is still in double figures?? Why??

Packetofcrispsplease · 22/09/2025 18:23

I’ve had heating on once for an hour as inside our house was only 16.5c and I wasn’t feeling well .
Then we had some sun for a few days so I haven’t needed to have it on yet .
We are now away from home in an old cottage far North , heating seems to be pre set and it’s coming on and off depending on indoor temperature.
It is cold though at nights here .
