it depends on many many factors and no i dont look down on those who chose to put the heating on, their money!

Exactly - why would anyone care that a total stranger has their heating on or needs an Oodie in September?

Saying “it’s not cold enough for the heating” or “I’d be far too hot in a jumper at 18 degrees” doesn’t equate to looking down on people who are cold and need a jumper 🫣

In many posters’ case it does, because their post isn’t just that statement. It includes clearly judgemental language about being ‘far’ too hot in other people’s houses and people ‘swanning about’ in inappropriate clothing. I’ve no idea why those posters care, but they do.

You're correct.
Saying it's generally 'too hot for heating' where you are is not the same as implying others mustn't be wearing enough clothes or are somehow inferior when it it isn't 'too hot for heating' where they are.
It's dull with a north wind where we are, and a little bit of heat can make it so much more comfortable.

reabies · 22/09/2025 12:30

We've just agreed this morning that ours can come on for a blast between 6.30-8am, after everyone felt the chill today. DH slightly aghast that it's still September. It's our first winter in this house so we'll see how well it holds the heat. it's been lovely all summer to be fair.

I am cold blooded and wfh, sitting here in trackies, slippers, tshirt, jumper, oodie and fingerless gloves for typing, and I'm still cold. I would have heating on September-June if I was allowed 😅

Arran2024 · 22/09/2025 12:35

We have two bernese mountain dogs and it just isn't fair to them to have a roasting house. So we use minimal heating and tend to wrap up warm instead.

Saying you think it’s too hot in other peoples houses is just an opinion - it’s not some moral judgement.

incognitomouse · 22/09/2025 12:46

I'm still at chuck-another-layer on stage. I'd put it on to take the edge off but I am trying to reduce our usage this year, as last year it was ridiculous.

You are aware of tone?
’Too warm’ is part of it. ‘I find it too warm for me in many people’s houses’ - fine.
‘Most people have their house far too warm’ - judgemental.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/09/2025 12:57

I’ve got my heated blanket on today for the first time as sitting still at a desk working.

However on Saturday, it was a colder day but I was making a roast (I know that’s not traditional for a Saturday!) and was absolutely roasting myself by the time I’d done it and had to open the back door.

Then of course everyone came to eat it and said they were cold!

It depends what you’re doing as much as anything else.

Peteryourhorseisheree · 22/09/2025 13:22

I wish we could. 3 weeks into a 10 week house renovation and the whole downstairs, hall and upstairs landing are back to brick and all the radiators are currently in a skip 🤣. I’m fucking freezing!

I'm cosy in my fleecy dressing gown over my clothes and my thermal slippers. I use throws to be extra cosy on the sofa. The fire is laid up for later.

DH went fishing this morning was in a teeshirt on the boat in the bay. Came home saying it's cold here

How can you accurately tell someone's tone via a screen?

When I say "most people have their house far too warm" that's just my opinion. It's not a judgement on them as a person in any way Confused

I don't think you of all people can comment on 'tone' after your comments on this thread... 'medicate it' didn't come across well.

Mh67 · 22/09/2025 17:07

Never use it. We are top floor flat and get the heat from the other flats

landlordhell · 22/09/2025 17:14

Yes I try to get to October. We are out all day and then cooking and out with the dog, both of which make me warm . When I do sit down I’ll throw on a blanket.

OneWarmGreySloth · 22/09/2025 17:47

I’m just outside Glasgow and my car had started to ice over when I went out to do the school run. No need to scrape but was that slushy ice way. Car said it was 2•. Absolutely Baltic and the heating went on as soon as I got home from dropping Ds at school.

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 22/09/2025 17:51

Mine’s on - so is the big jumper! Had to scrape ice off the windscreen this morning - definitely the earliest date in the year I’ve ever had to do that.

Emmz1510 · 22/09/2025 17:51

We have a considerable tolerance for chilliness in this house and we all prefer the house to be slightly on the cool side, but even we have needed it on for a couple of hours in the morning to take the chill off. The weather is actually surprisingly pleasant for the time of year here in the west of Scotland- it’s dry, been sunny for most of the day, and temperatures hovering around 13/14 for most of the day but there was a covering of frost this morning and hubby had to defrost the car for the first time since last winter.

Skyelils · 22/09/2025 17:52

I caved yesterday and had it on in the morning . But got my blanket out today can’t be doing that too often

PrissyGalore · 22/09/2025 17:55

I just have mine set to a thermostat-if it’s colder, it switches on. I lower it overnight as I don’t sleep well in warm rooms. But if I want the heating on, I’ll put it on-it’s not a competition!

mateysmum · 22/09/2025 17:57

It's been a a lovely sunny day here today and currently 23c in the house with no heating on. I was in the garden earlier and it was fine with just a light jumper on. So no need for heating yet.

Don't need it on. Tbh you get used to lower temperatures. Our boiler needs replacing but it's 6K. Can't afford it.

Middleagedspreadisreal · 22/09/2025 17:58

Had it on & off for a week. Hate being cold.

Soberinthecity · 22/09/2025 17:59

Toomanywaterbottles · 21/09/2025 20:32

It’s not cold, though. I’ve been in sandals and a summer dress all day, out and about. Got three loads of washing dried on the line outside.

Depends where you are I guess.

WhereAreMyAirpods · 22/09/2025 18:00

People who manage their heating by the calendar are nuts. Seriously - "no heating until November" is batshit crazy. If it is cold, it is cold.

And it was fecking baltic in Glasgow this morning, it was 4c when I got up at 7am and there was frost on the grass. That is not wafting around in sandals and a summer dress weather. We have a well-insulated house but 16c inside is too cold for sitting comfortably indoors.
