Heather blankets are good

I know you corrected this to 'heated', but you might be onto something... you should trademark the idea of stuffing heather into a duvet 🙂

Honeypizza · 22/09/2025 09:30

DS bedroom clock said it was 13 degrees in there this morning. The winter duvets are on and we've occasionally put the fire on in the evenings to take the chill off. This morning felt very nippy though! We don't have central heating but I usually wheel out the oil heaters in October.

OhNoNotSusan · 22/09/2025 09:40

the only concessions i have made is to change into trousers in the evening, after wearing a dress/short trousers, all day

You do realise those seasons are all out of kilter now?

We had snow in the winter, a beautiful spring, a warm summer and the temps have dropped in the last week or so now it's autumn. Feels pretty standard to me.

Miyagi99 · 22/09/2025 09:56

It’s only been under 10 here at night and I never have the heating on at night anyway. Doors and windows open today as it’s chilly but lovely in the sun (Wales).

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/09/2025 09:58

I’ve been having it on first thing in the mornings because I have secondary school kids who have to get up really early- I’m not adding being freezing cold to the already horrible experience of a 6.15 start.

I haven’t been putting it on in the afternoons yet, that’ll come later.

This is third time I’ve seen you say “medicate it”…… you know it’s not that easy right?

For most women it is.

Have you checked that you will get the WFA this year, I thought even after Labour reinstated it, only those on pension credit will get it?

No, those on pension credit got it last year. This year it’s income under £35k for a single person. I thin’ it’s doubled for a couple but I’m not sure why - doesn’t cost more to heat for 2!

cardibach · 22/09/2025 10:24

warmapplepies · 22/09/2025 08:57

Oh I know, but it happens ever year on these threads. Someone innocently says they’re not cold enough for the heating and within five posts someone inevitably brings up some official guidance telling them they’re going to make themselves sick and destroy their home with damp if they don’t put the heating on immediately 😉

There’s a subset of posters every year (and it’s always the same names) who genuinely seem
to get offended when you say you’re not cold and don’t want the heating on yet. They bring out guidance, talk about how being cold doesn’t make you superior and seemingly hate the idea of people being different to them.

I think it’s more because the heating-not-on people seem offended and incredulous that anyone might want their house at a moderate temperature - say the lower end of medical advice - and scoff about ‘swanning aroundin t shirts’ even when they are told people are wearing thick clothes. There’s a distinct superiority in the posts about it. They think they are the only ones who are able to dress appropriately and are much healthier and tougher than anyone who still needs a jumper (or oodie) at 18.
It’s the no heating people who seem to hate and look down on everyone else as far as I can see.

justasking111 · 22/09/2025 11:21

16.5c in the hall. I'm back in fleecy dressing gown and winter slippers. But the sun is shining, will warm up later.

Will ask DH to check the heating today. One year it was kaput.

mondaytosunday · 22/09/2025 11:22

Not cold enough yet here but if it was 8 degrees out it would be on! I’ve set it at 18 and it clicks on whenever it gets below that. I do have my gas fire on in the living room occasionally- think first time this season was a couple weeks ago.

RedPony1 · 22/09/2025 11:29

it's been t shirt weather all weekend here. Our thermostat hasn't dropped below 20 yet when i've been checking, toasty!
We've still got the fan on at night at the moment

No, that’s just your interpretation - I’ve had this discussion with you multiple times under previous names of mine. You’re very very predictable on these threads!

These threads are always the same. It's like a competition on who can wait the longest before putting their heating on.

I work from home, sitting in my office gets cold (it gets very little sun any time of the year, it's lovely in the summer though😂). I'm sat here really cold, my hands are so cold they're getting painful and my dodgy finger is starting to hurt. I'm in jeans and a jumper, with slippers on so not inappropriately dressed.

I've just put the heating on. I had a few years without heating and by God that was bleak, I wouldn't do that out of choice.

I have always turned it once the washing stops drying overnight. Wet washing hanging around isn't good for the place.

walking my dog the wind has been beautifully warm, up until today, a bit of a chilly wind, but no coat needed

OhNoNotSusan · 22/09/2025 11:46

made my bed the other day, well changed all the covers and what not, that is a very good method of getting warm! top tip

This comment suggests you are too…
That I’m insulted or hate anyone for their heating preferences is just your perception. It’s wrong, incidentally. I dislike being judged or considered too stupid to know how to stay warm is all.

I walk dogs for the local dogs’ home. Still walking in a t shirt, but the heating has clicked on from the thermostats a few times (clicks on below 19). Walking is different, particularly with a dog to wrangle.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/09/2025 11:50

@cardibach I think it also really depends where you are and what kind of house you have - our lovely rental is big but stone built and whilst nice and cool in summer it easily gets chilly - we also have tiled floors and underfloor in hall and kitchen ( plus radiators) the underfloor is not efficient and hence we need the radiators on for some of the day - mainly late afternoon onwards and first thing for a couple of hours or house just feels chilly - it is also not warm here in Bath for last few weeks and a lot of rain . When people say its20 degrees and lovely it’s clearly not round here, sun yes intermittently but not warm-

BlackBirdOracle · 22/09/2025 11:50

Just a quick 10 mins once or twice on cold days, it stays warm for a while after I turn it off, and helps dry my washing, I don't get much sun this time of year in my garden.

You’re right, I do read them a lot as I find them oddly fascinating. Your name in particular stands out as you’re always on these threads saying the exact same thing every single year.

it depends on many many factors and no i dont look down on those who chose to put the heating on, their money!

anothercortisolqueen · 22/09/2025 11:55

I moved into a new house at the beginning of the summer, I’ve got no idea how to use the Nest or download the app or anything , trying to figure it out. I may succeed in in not putting it on at all at this rate 😂😂

Yes, you’re correct, I apologise for asking without checking! It says that all pensioners will get it but HMRC will claim it back if your total income is more than £35,000.

That’s almost £3000 a month I think, seems quite generous to me. I’m a pensioner and don’t have that much income each year but my retirement plan is set up to reflect that. I get a modest income monthly from two work pensions and the state pension then use my savings and drawdown from a large private pension fund to pay for home improvements, cars, holidays or other needs. Looks like these funds don’t count as they are not part of my income per se.

No33 · 21/09/2025 23:28

I have had it completely off since end of April.

Turned it on today. It's set 3 times a day to come on at or below 18'. We have a nest. It came on around 5pm. It goes off again at temp or timed.

I'm in greater manc

Edited

I’m also in Greater Manchester, it’s a lovely sunny day but a bit nippy, my heating came on at 7am this morning so it must have dropped below 18° in the house. I’ve got the window open but I’m about to shut it as even wearing thick joggers and a fleece jumper, I’m starting to get cold.
