Clearly the people who actually live there are happy.
If the house stinks it's probably down to more than just heating.

No, central heating has a smell. It’s musty and makes the house smell unclean. Horrible invention

“Warm enough” is not the same as too hot to wear a jumper! It’s horrible. The air stinks, and everyone’s uncomfortable. The heating will be going on at work soon and I’m dreading it

No ones uncomfortable in this house with the heating on.

I loathe cold houses and offices. My hands get too numb to do anything and l ache. I also shiver. Even with lots of layers, Akthough l hate layers too.

And the only jumpers l can wear are cotton and silk. Cottons not very warm and silk is too expensive.

padso · 21/09/2025 21:49

@Whenthetimeisright you are ineligible if your household incomes exceeds 70k for 2 or 35k for 1

In your opinion.

padso · 21/09/2025 21:51

the point is you shouldn’t need to - your house shouldn’t be that hot!

Your house should be how you like it. I bet people love visiting you!

If there is a smell, either the house is dirty and dusty and someone needs to clean behind the radiators, or there's a problem with your installation. That is not normal.

sugarapplelane · 21/09/2025 21:54

I’m in the South and am still walking around in bare feet and sandals. The windows are all wide open too.
It’s certainly not heating weather yet where I am.

Our house doesn’t smell because we don’t have it on - we open a window! Keeping your windows shut all day is awful for you. So is having the heating on. My dad’s consultant confirmed it, it’s horrendous.

Yes, that's very true. I've never detected a smell.

Titsywoo · 21/09/2025 21:54

Our house holds heat well so it is still 20 degrees inside even though it is 10 outside. Unlikely to need to put it on until it gets nearer 5 degrees outside.

I’m not sure that’s true.

I know plenty of old to very old people who never open windows, Dm never did and she lived to 86

Not airing the house is a bad idea, however I doubt any consultant would tell you that putting heating on when it's cold is a bad idea in general.

AzurePanda · 21/09/2025 21:57

Never put the heating on before Remembrance Sunday.

It might smell of damp though if you never put the heating on.

It is - it dries out the air and it’s awful for your lungs, sinuses and skin.

Nope. Cos we ventilate.

cardibach · 21/09/2025 20:46

Surely anything below 20 would be abit chilly for a bath for children? At 18 I need an oodie, for instance. So you are saying your house is between 30 and 35? This seems unlikely.
What do you mean by using Ugg boots as sleepers?

Edited

20 degrees and everyone in this house would be sitting in their underwear sweating.

18 is just about top end of comfortable to me, certainly not Oodie territory.

People like different temperatures!

I don't know what you are on about.

I open my windows like most people, but "having the heating on" is not awful for you.

You might want to read about the health problems that people living in poverty and unsuitable conditions experience, and what the lack of heating actually does.

A cold house isn't great for the respiratory system either.

I’ll trust the consultant over people on Mumsnet who are apparently numb when it’s 18 degrees!!!

It can still be damp though if unheated. Unless you have your windows open 24/7 even in the depth of winter.

You can wear others. You choose not to!
