To say Aldi is not even cheap anymore

Abdican · 21/09/2025 14:32

basically I went earlier with DD16 and spent 97 quid and I don’t even feel like I got a proper shop it’s just bread milk fruit bits for lunches some nappies and cleaning stuff and it’s gone. honestly I remember when you could do a full trolley there for 60 and that wasn’t even that long ago

I don’t know if it’s just me cos the kids are eating more now like DS14 eats constantly and DD6 is so fussy I end up buying extra bits for her to actually eat something but it feels like no matter where I go (aldi lidl tesco) it’s all the same price now.

DP just rolls his eyes and says I must be wasting money but he doesn’t see how much food they all go through. DD16 eats like an adult now plus she had to get stuff for college lunches cos apparently “everyone else” takes meal deals 🙄 so I caved and got her some wraps and chicken bits which aren’t cheap either.

sorry long post I just wondered if anyone else feels like Aldi isn’t even cheap anymore or if I’m shopping wrong xx

Aldi and lidls crisps are shite.

if you wanted a bakery I think Lidl might be more your friend.

Some are ok. I like the currywurst sausage crinkle crisps.

I am sure there are more OK ones. But the Jalapeno and Cheese ones I would agree are a pretty awful substitute for Walkers witha very insipid taste and no heat.

Not really got a Lidl close to me, Aldi is the close shop and then Morrisons or Tescos for everything not Aldi.

I prefer the Aldi version of Pringles to real
Pringles, which I find too salty and a bit cardboard-like in texture.
Aldi fake Mars chocolate bars are also fine and their ice cream fake Mars.
Their diet cola is fine at about 50p. Maybe I don’t have a very discerning palate but I’m sure in a blind taste taste I wouldn’t know the difference between branded and unbranded. Same for biscuits, oven chips etc.
Can’t think of anything I’ve brought from Aldi which is inferior to other supermarket owners brands or branded items.
I can get most of my shopping there except frozen croquette potatoes, and bizarrely they don’t sell roast potatoes in the summer.
I mostly shop at Aldi, Tesco Express for top ups as it’s just down the road, and occasionally Asda.
I might try Iceland as I keep seeing their offers and they look pretty good if you eat a lot of beige frozen stuff like I do.

NotSmallButFunSize · 22/09/2025 12:22

It depends where you live also - the Asda near us has next to no "own brands" available, it's all branded. It's targeted stock, our local Tesco Express is the same.

So for us I find Asda a complete rip off compared to Aldi. Tesco too though occasionally clubcard prices (or Nectar at Sainsburys) are comparable for some items. A whole shop would definitely be more expensive though

Oh me too - branded Pringles are absolutely bollocks! Virtually all Aldi crisps are exactly the same or better than branded, people are just snobs

I didn't rate Aldi's own brand crisps, found them a bit flavourless. Prefer Morrisons or Waitrose crisps.

I go to Poundland for crisps and chocolate though as they sell Frisps, Roysters T-bone steak, and (most importantly) Milka chocolate in multiple flavours.

I agree on everything else and am an Aldi / Lidls shopper of 20 odd years, so rave about so much they do.
but for me. Their crisps are shite. Whenever they bring out new ones I think “they’ve nailed it this time”. Try them, everyone complains and the birds get them. Grin

seratoninmoonbeams · 22/09/2025 13:52

I’m lucky as DS works at Sainsbury’s so I have a 15% discount Fri/Sat. Do like a few Aldi bits though as well. I sometimes think it would be worth getting a minimal hour job at a supermarket just for the discount when DS leaves.

intrepidpanda · 22/09/2025 09:13

Being saying this for ages. Aldi and Lidl are cheap long enough to get a reputation. This sticks so even when prices go up people still have it stuck in their head they are cheap.

But they are the cheapest.
They win that award thing... and Which? says so.
It might not be cheap (nowhere is) but I believe it is the cheapest.

Roobarbtwo · 22/09/2025 16:33

Aldi and lidl crisps are not shite on any level. The pringle dupes are lovely

This illustrates why all the threads that ask for Aldi recommendations as if it's some special place are a waste of time because it totally depends on your taste buds

I really like Aldi crisps and buy them regularly but I wouldn't suggest anyone else buys them as how could I know what they will like

Completely agree. Like any supermarket you do the trial and error and know what you like. With the likes of Aldi it means it might take a while for you to find your savings.

I never understand why there's so much hate for Aldi on MN!

We love it & shop there every week. I detest Tesco so rarely go there.

I often shop in m&s so if its not Aldi its m&s.

I went shopping yesterday & we got

1 x medium free range chicken
Broccoli
Bag of sweet potatoes
Baby baby potatoes
Large butternut squash
On the vine tomatoes
Cucumber
Spring onions
4 pack of ripe avocados
Fresh coriander
Fresh chilli's
Fresh ginger
Limes
Mushrooms
Specially select Strawberries
Bag of satsumas
Bag pink lady apples
Almond butter
12 free range eggs
3 litres of low fat milk
Natural yoghurt
Pack of red & yellow peppers
Bag of carrots
Frozen mango chunks
Sweet chilli sauce
2 x tins of baked beans
Jars of turmeric, cumin & coriander
Bag of baby spinach
Tin of coconut oil
Frozen raw tiger prawns
Bag of uncooked brown rice
Tray of small bottles of sparkling water
Multiseed wraps
6 x bottles of beer (leffe & erdinger)
Tinfoil
Cooked Beetroot
Asparagus
Balsamic vinegar
Jar of jalapeños
Red wine vinegar

And we got all that for £65 which i felt was excellent value!

Lots of the products were the specially select range too.

ifyoulikealotofchocolateonyour · 22/09/2025 22:35

I agree. The last time I went to Aldi to do the weekly shop I spent £200!! It used to be possible to do the same shop for much closer to £100.

It's going to sound ridiculous but I've started shopping on Ocado and find i can control spending on there much more easily. Can't work out if it's because its better value for money, better quality or just because I'm not tempted by stuff as I walk round the shop but generally I can do a big shop on there for about 170 or a small weekly shop for ablut 130. We are a family of 5.

ozarina · 23/09/2025 00:41

Oh I can recommend the orange and pineapple squash too which my H says is as good as Robinsons 🤷‍♀️ 99p versus 3 pounds.

Crikeyalmighty · 23/09/2025 13:29

@ifyoulikealotofchocolateonyouri think it’s because you tend to be focussed and searching for specifics to add , rather than just wandering around and things catch your eye, especially if they look like a bargain - - I do an Ocado shop once a month and find the same( although this is instead of my M&S/waitrose shop) only have us 2 adults at home now and find if you are sensible, don’t eat loads of snacks that the places like Aldi or Lidl don’t make sense for me as I can’t do full shops as I don’t like a lot of the own branded stuff

AnonymousBleep · 25/09/2025 14:06

Food prices have gone up everywhere due to extreme weather this summer all over the globe fucking things up for farmers. Aldi is the only supermarket to have spent £600 million trying to shield its customers from food inflation. Reality is those weekly shops are going to carry on getting more and more expensive, at a higher rate than general inflation.

ozarina · 25/09/2025 19:55

Can you explain what you mean by saying Aldi has spent 600million trying to shield its customers? How has this worked?

Fedupmumofadultsons · 03/01/2026 17:46

angelspike2025 · 21/09/2025 15:53

that! £30?
meat, veg (cheap), potatoes (cheap), gravy if you don’t have any in already
even if you added ready made Yorkshires and stuffing I don’t see how you got to £30

That's a bit mean to op .£30 I think op has 4 kids plus daughters friend .so basically 4 adult portions 3 kids. All that food extras cranberry sauce yorkies fizzy pop .you could be easy £5/6 for a big cheesecake .£30 sounds about right unfortunately gone are the days you got a weeks shopping for a large family for less than £100

Sahara123 · 03/01/2026 17:52

Netcurtainnelly · 21/09/2025 15:51

We do lidl, and sainsburys for things we can't get in lidl.
Sainsburys is expensive. Lidl have a good loyalty app.

I bought chicken fillets today in Sainsbury’s that were price matched to Aldi .

Slightyamusedandsilly · 03/01/2026 18:01

Agree. Less choice. Some of the stuff (not all) is lower quality. Same price-ish of places like Morrisons where at least the price is offset by better choice.

RedToothBrush · 03/01/2026 18:04

Same price-ish of places like Morrisons

I will shop in Sainser, Tesco, Aldi, Asda or Lidl.

I avoid Morrisons like I avoid Waitrose because I value my arms andd legs.

BonneMamanAbricot · 03/01/2026 18:04

I get a lot from Stamford St at Sainsbury's and that's usually cheaper than Aldi, or at least price matched. I don't really find Aldi great value in my experience - there are select cheap things I buy there (eggs, crackers, peanut butter, oats, some produce) but most of the things I buy aren't cheaper there when compared to other supermarket own brands.

Lifeofthepartay · 03/01/2026 18:59

I stopped going to Aldi 2 years ago when prices went up. It's on par with Tesco now, but at least in Tesco you get clubcard points....
