To say Aldi is not even cheap anymore

basically I went earlier with DD16 and spent 97 quid and I don’t even feel like I got a proper shop it’s just bread milk fruit bits for lunches some nappies and cleaning stuff and it’s gone. honestly I remember when you could do a full trolley there for 60 and that wasn’t even that long ago

I don’t know if it’s just me cos the kids are eating more now like DS14 eats constantly and DD6 is so fussy I end up buying extra bits for her to actually eat something but it feels like no matter where I go (aldi lidl tesco) it’s all the same price now.

DP just rolls his eyes and says I must be wasting money but he doesn’t see how much food they all go through. DD16 eats like an adult now plus she had to get stuff for college lunches cos apparently “everyone else” takes meal deals 🙄 so I caved and got her some wraps and chicken bits which aren’t cheap either.

sorry long post I just wondered if anyone else feels like Aldi isn’t even cheap anymore or if I’m shopping wrong xx

I use Aldi for certain things that are way cheaper than my Sainsbo shop - tortilla chips and the jars of dip - salsa, sour cream, nacho cheese. Those jars are about 80p compared to 2.30 in Sainsbo. I also buy their top label chicken kievs and battered fish. Their tinned goods are good buys too eg mushy peas and mandarins ( addicted) . We also buy their cheap Baileys, biscuits , the huge Nan breads and their own version of Soleros. There is one on the way out of town so I will drop in but normal delivery is Sainsbo.

No aldi isn’t cheap at all plus the food shrinkage is taking the piss, mince is £5!doesn’t taste nice anymore either since they changed the packaging.

Their thick kitchen roll used to be £1.25 and it's now (I think) £2.60ish and the sheets are half as thick. The price increase I could have dealt with but the decrease in quality enraged me. They've also shrunk their poppadoms twice and the slices of the value bread became smaller. I could go on.

Also the dates on meat are only a couple of days, this has been going on for a few weeks now,yes I know I can freeze them but that’s not the point.

Aldi prices may have gone up but so has all other supermarkets.

They are all price matching each other which means the saving on basket totals isn't as big as it used to be if you are using Lidl or Aldi vs Tesco/ Sainsburys/ Asda. The real savings come from the own brand but many supermarkets seem to have reduced their own brand offerings on certain lines.

One thing that does creep up on us as well when thinking about cost of shopping now vs a few years ago is lifestyle change. My SIL was on about it the other day. Her shopping, like everyone elses has gone up (especially pre Covid), however she no longer gets coffee on the way to work and instead takes a travel mug in with nice coffee from home in (so buying more coffee pods vs Starbucks on the way to work), she packs up for work now vs going out for a meal deal at the supermarket (saving what used to be around £3 per day). Less takeaways so another night of cooking. BIL packs up for work now rather than eat in the work canteen every day (moved jobs so no work canteen any more), she now has 4 teenage boys with hollow legs Vs a few years ago with primary aged children with school dinners. Now at secondary the boys want pack up rather than queue for the school canteen and risk getting no dinner (50 min lunches with staggered lunchtimes), or cutting their football time. As a result, she's buying more in the food shop - making meals with leftovers for the next day's pack up for 6 translates to bigger packs of meat, more rice/ pasta/ potatoes/ bread. Her DS's and husband all make sandwiches using 4 rounds of bread instead of 2, if they have jacket potatoes it's always 3 instead of 1 or 2.

And why do the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury's do Aldi price match if Aldi isn't cheaper?

And I like that, at Aldi, you don't need a loyalty card to access the cheapest prices. No gimmicks, no offers, just cheaper, accessible prices for everyone. And super speedy checkouts which I love! Gets the whole thing done so much quicker!

intrepidpanda · 22/09/2025 09:13

Being saying this for ages. Aldi and Lidl are cheap long enough to get a reputation. This sticks so even when prices go up people still have it stuck in their head they are cheap.

Yes, I do appreciate that.

yeah I think that’s what it is really nowhere is cheap anymore and it just feels harder cos there’s so many of us to feed. roast dinner today cost nearly 30 quid on its own and that’s before puddings or snacks and by Tuesday it’ll be gone cos DS14 eats like a horse and DD16 raids the fridge late at night 🙄

I’d love DP to do the shop but he’d just come back with frozen pizzas and multipacks of crisps and say it’ll do lol he don’t get that you have to think about pack ups and making stuff last. he reckons we should all just eat the same meals but he don’t get that DS10 won’t touch veg, DD6 lives off plain pasta and DS2 still has his bottles on top of food.

maybe I will try Asda or even Tesco next week just to see if it works out cheaper, but Aldi’s walking distance so it’s habit really. just feels like you can’t win xx

We get tesco delivery once a week and top up in aldi or m & s because my dd11 has arfid and is nightmare to feed. We enjoy thr Tesco club card and also pay 7.99 for delivery saver plan a month. Worth it in my opinion but we still seem to spends hundreds a month on food for 4 of us ( both kids hard tp feed won't eat same as us due to their autism picky eating issues)

Agree i don't buy meat or fish in aldi or lidl anymore. Salmon always smelled off same with beef in those packs of vacuum seal.

Has anyone mentioned this comparison site https://www.trolley.co.uk/search/?from=search&q=Mince+500g

I bought mince in Sainsbo the other day and was shocked it was a fiver!

Dolphin78 · 22/09/2025 10:16

I don’t have green shop in Aldi as it’s further away anyway in a cost saving effort I went past week. After spending £67 I totted it all up in the Sainsbury’s app and it was a £1 cheaper in Sainsbury’s adding fuel to that and time it was more expensive shopping in Aldi..

TheatricalLife · 22/09/2025 10:19

Runnersandtoms · 22/09/2025 08:44

Everything is more expensive everywhere but Aldi is still proven to be cheaper than others (why do you think the others do Aldi price match?)

I shop mostly in Aldi, and I've never had problems with fruit going off quicker, in fact the last lot of strawberries I got from Sainsbury's at a much higher price were half mouldy within a day. Also people claiming butchers/local shops are better are just virtue signalling. I'm sure they sell lovely stuff but it will definitely cost a bloody fortune.

I buy almost no branded goods and Aldi own versions of things are generally really good. I don't agree that pack sizes are smaller either. Frequently it is exact the same product as elsewhere.

.

I’m sitting here eating a bowl of Lidl bran flakes at the moment, quite honestly I think I’d rather eat the box as that’s what they taste like ! Won’t be buying them again .

I think that it's a well known tactic in hard times, isn't it. If they make expensive cuts of meat even more expensive then people just switch to cheaper cuts. If they make cheaper cuts more expensive then ... what can you do? (other than go vegetarian).

The price of basics goes up because there is no alternative.Sad

budgiegirl · 22/09/2025 10:29

Aldi and Lidl are still the cheapest, according to Which surveys, by about 10%. But the gap is smaller than it was. On the whole, nothing is cheap any more, so it's definitely the case that a weekly shop is are more expensive than it was, even a couple of years ago, but that's true for all supermarkets.

I know that if I shop in Aldi or Lidl, I definitely spend less than I do in other supermarkets. As long as I avoid the 'Aisle of Shite' and don't come home with an inflatable canoe.

ParanoidGynodroid · 22/09/2025 11:18

I love the Isle of Shite! Never had so many tools in my life.

£6.45 for a box of Weetabix in Aldi today - it’s a big box, but none the less!

Just checked. That box is £6.50 in Tesco, so Aldi is a little cheaper on it. If everything was 5p cheaper it would make a difference.

GasPanic · 22/09/2025 11:42

I think Aldi is cheaper and some of the food is good. Other stuff can be a bit limp. Like their jalapeno and cheese snackrite crisps which aren't a patch on the walkers ones.

Their meat in general is very good. Fruit and veg probably a little worse.

I don't like the fact they don't do frozen mince beef, which is a staple of many dishes.

I am also a bit unimpressed with their ambition. For example they recently opened a new store near me and was hoping they would take the opportunity to do something a bit different like add in a bakery but no, the new store was pretty much exactly the same as the old. So boring as hell, if OK from a functional perspective.

I was also hoping they might do something like bus in fresh baguettes each day. But no. I guess it is this kind of saving on costs that allows them to be cheaper.

Aldi and lidls crisps are shite.

if you wanted a bakery I think Lidl might be more your friend.

ClareBlue · 22/09/2025 12:07

They are so bad I gave ours to the goats mixed with their feed. They were carefully picked out and left by every goat😂
I gave the rest crushed up to the birds and it took two days to disappear. Never again.

ClareBlue · 22/09/2025 12:08

That was meant to quote the bran flakes own brand. They are almost impossible to eat.
