To say Aldi is not even cheap anymore

Abdican · 21/09/2025 14:32

basically I went earlier with DD16 and spent 97 quid and I don’t even feel like I got a proper shop it’s just bread milk fruit bits for lunches some nappies and cleaning stuff and it’s gone. honestly I remember when you could do a full trolley there for 60 and that wasn’t even that long ago

I don’t know if it’s just me cos the kids are eating more now like DS14 eats constantly and DD6 is so fussy I end up buying extra bits for her to actually eat something but it feels like no matter where I go (aldi lidl tesco) it’s all the same price now.

DP just rolls his eyes and says I must be wasting money but he doesn’t see how much food they all go through. DD16 eats like an adult now plus she had to get stuff for college lunches cos apparently “everyone else” takes meal deals 🙄 so I caved and got her some wraps and chicken bits which aren’t cheap either.

sorry long post I just wondered if anyone else feels like Aldi isn’t even cheap anymore or if I’m shopping wrong xx

Bloody hell @Abdican what are you buying to spend £30 on a roast?

that! £30?
meat, veg (cheap), potatoes (cheap), gravy if you don’t have any in already
even if you added ready made Yorkshires and stuffing I don’t see how you got to £30

TheThingsWeDo4Love · 21/09/2025 16:08

Abdican · 21/09/2025 14:56

thanks glad it’s not just me I honestly thought I was losing the plot cos everyone always goes on about Aldi being cheapest but I come out spending more than when I go Asda half the time

agree about the fruit and veg it goes off so quick I bought strawberries on Friday and by Saturday they were all mushy so then the kids moan cos they’ve got nothing nice for packed lunches and I end up running back out spending even more

I’d love to do butcher/greengrocer but I don’t drive and ours are a pain to get to on the bus with DS2 in the buggy so I just do Aldi cos it’s walking distance. DP says I should go Tesco cos they do more deals but I swear it’s all the same now

maybe I just need to meal plan better but with 5 of them eating different things it feels impossible lol xx

If he’s so confident to tell you that you must be doing things incorrectly, he should be well up for the challenges of dong the weekly shop on a budget of his reckoning, for not just a one off, but for at least a month.
See what his position is after that.
Itll be a win/win situation for you with either result.
if he ends up agreeing with you on how difficult it is , he should stop the moaning, and even agree that you need to make your supermarket budget larger.
if he does manage to do the supermarket needs for less, then he can share his ideas on how he achieved that with you, well as long as he’s not sneery about his “success”.

l’ll bet he won’t take up this challenge, coz he’ll be too busy doing his important job 🤣

mamagogo1 · 21/09/2025 16:13

It’s “bits for lunches” that are super expensive. My trick has always been to roast a large pork shoulder or perhaps chicken on a Sunday and use the leftovers for sandwiches plus another meal, dc got what they were given too, special foods add up (obviously allergies aside) I can spend £50 on a full shop or the same and just get “bits” without being careful

InOverMyHead84 · 21/09/2025 16:15

My DW spent £120 this week at Aldi. Like for like at Tesco is £98.

Aldi is no longer cheapest.

stayathomer · 21/09/2025 16:19

Eggs, bread, biscuits, cleaning products, toilet rolls, pasta, rice etc … all comparable to most supermarket own brands. Plus their milk and most meat don’t seem to last to the date it says

but I still think Aldi’s fruit and veg and yoghurts, ice cream and cereal is worth going for (but don’t shop there much anymore as I work in a different shop plus the milk and meat thing made it too difficult)

warmapplepies · 21/09/2025 16:38

Abdican · 21/09/2025 15:52

honestly it adds up quick I got chicken big enough for all of us then spuds carrots broccoli yorkshires gravy then I picked up a cheesecake for after cos DD16 had her mate over and I didn’t want her embarrassed with nothing nice. plus stuffing cranberry sauce fizzy drinks etc so by the time you chuck all that in it’s basically 30 quid gone

I know I could do it cheaper but if I don’t get the extras someone always moans and then I feel guilty xx

So it wasn't £30 on a roast then, lol. Makes more sense.

That really surprises me, what were the things that were so much more expensive?

Crikeyalmighty · 21/09/2025 16:58

I admit there are only 2 of us now but I can get a very high quality shop including a bottle of good wines M&S or Waitrose with a bit of Sainsbury’s for basics using nectar points for around£100 -that’s my budget so whilst I can do it I will continue- we don’t have an Aldi here in Bath and our Lidl is horrible- I did do a fair bit of Lidl and Aldi when we lived in Copenhagen as they dominate and it wasa very very mixed picture, quite cheap but some things quite good ( cooked meat, yoghurt , cleaning stuff) other stuff totally revolting or just not good quality - in fact my Hs common expression was’this is from Lidl isn’t it’ and I do think their stores can be quite variable too in terms of standards and quality -

ParanoidGynodroid · 21/09/2025 17:02

I think you're right, OP.
We don't shop there much as we live well out of town and usually get things delivered, but DH and I took a trip to Aldi just a couple of days ago. I was surprised how expensive it was!
I did get some cheap laundry products, my favourite Manchego cheese was a good price, and bought lots of yarn from the WTF aisle.

Most stuff was comparable to Tesco or Asda though.

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 21/09/2025 17:19

everyone always goes on about Aldi being cheapest but I come out spending more than when I go Asda half the time

I've thought this for a while.

It does depend on what you buy but the cost savings that were there a few years ago aren't as obvious or aren't there.

InOverMyHead84 · 21/09/2025 17:21

Shr3dding · 21/09/2025 16:39

Nothing was massively different. The odd 10p here 20p there according to DW.

I've not forensically gone through the receipt, so I am trusting her judgement.

CalzoneOnLegs · 21/09/2025 17:26

Nowhere is cheap, but Aldi is good value, and they do stock some very good lines for the price. Like the continental cheeses for example.

maddiemookins16mum · 21/09/2025 17:27

I’ve been doing a weekly Asda shop for a few months, everything we need for £70-80. Two of us, plus 2 cats. This includes all toiletries and household stuff. We rarely need a top up shop, the odd loaf of bread aside. Aldi comes in £5-£10 cheaper, used to be more.

user2848502016 · 21/09/2025 17:28

I find that Aldi isn’t cheap anymore, but Tesco is even more expensive. Food is just expensive full stop. Usually spend around £100 every time I do a big shop in Aldi these days (2 adults, 14 and 10 year olds), Tesco easily £120 for the same stuff

MissMarplesNiece · 21/09/2025 17:32

Prices have gone up everywhere and there are now items I look at twice and then put back on the shelf. I mainly use Aldi, Tesco, Asda and occasionally the Coop & Sainsbury. I find Aldi is still the least expensive of all of them for a weekly shop. I've never had any problem with the quality of their fruit and veg and in my experience they don't go off anymore quickly than the fresh produce from other supermarkets including Sainsbury.

Nsky62 · 21/09/2025 17:39

bluevelvetbox · 21/09/2025 14:36

I don't have an Aldi near me but feel exactly the same about Lidl OP.

A fair it is cheaper in Lidl, esp things like cold meat, it’s the extras that add up,
I buy my eco cleaning stuff online, more expensive, tho I think less toxic and better

goingtotown · 21/09/2025 17:49

Fruit & Veg at Tesco Sainsbury’s Waitrose & Asda all better quality than Aldi.

KellySeveride · 21/09/2025 17:52

I switched from Aldi to Tesco about 18 months ago when my weekly shop at Aldi had crept up to £150, and I tried Tesco as a one off and it cost the same. My Tesco shop still sits at around the £150 mark but we get branded stuff. Honestly I don’t think I’ll be going back to Aldi

RedToothBrush · 21/09/2025 17:55

crazeekat · 21/09/2025 15:07

Tesco is £2 more for minced beef than Aldis for exactly the same amount. I buy 5 of them to last a month. That’s £10 more in Tesco on just one item. For absolutely nothing.
however I totally agree in the grand scheme of it all aldis is mostly just as expensive or stuff not as good , and I was able to do a full shop there at one time. Now I’d rather spend the extra and do Tesco or whatever, but truth is I actually need to just cut costs and my daughters won’t be getting the top brands of cheese or crisps. If they don’t like it too bad. Don’t eat.

Aldi is cheaper for meat.

Tesco is much of a muchness or cheaper for store cupboard goods.

Imissgoldengrahams · 21/09/2025 18:28

I find Asda super expensive compared to Tesco or Morrisons
I use Iceland/home bargains for snacks, biscuits, crisps and tinned stuff

Its really worrying to think "I can't afford this" especially when I need to buy gluten free. And the only decent gluten free bread is 3.50. It makes me really sad

Avenueofhope · 21/09/2025 18:44

I get most of my shopping at Asda but Aldi is nearer so if I need just a few things I go there to top up. Aldi is still cheaper for basics like bread and milk. I walk to the shops and also have Tesco and M&S within walking distance; which I sometimes go to, but don't really like Tesco. I only have myself to buy for and don't eat meat. I spend £25 to £30 per week on average.

bluevelvetbox · 21/09/2025 14:36

I don't have an Aldi near me but feel exactly the same about Lidl OP.

I've noticed that Lidl has become much more expensive now. Their ranges that we used to get have also been cut or reduced so it's barely worth going now.

Oh yes, gluten free. There's two of us GF and it costs a lot of money to do sandwiches and things. I hate it when people trivialise or worse laugh at the position people like us are put in.

Obviously it depends what you're buying but I can't think of much that's so much more expensive in Aldi for the same thing so wondering if I'm not registering large price differences.

I do make the most of clubcard prices and don't buy much branded stuff so maybe it's to do with that but I can't imagine ever finding Aldi that much more expensive per week

onlytakesaminute · 21/09/2025 18:54

I’m not loyal to any supermarket anymore. I go between Sainsbury’s, Tescos, Aldi and Lidl. When the things we like (dried goods, tins, cleaning stuff) are on offer I buy lots of it to stock up. Then I tend to buy whatever that shop has on offer for dinners that week. I also buy more and put in freezer. Basically if it isn’t on offer I don’t get it!
