To say Aldi is not even cheap anymore

Abdican · 21/09/2025 14:32

basically I went earlier with DD16 and spent 97 quid and I don’t even feel like I got a proper shop it’s just bread milk fruit bits for lunches some nappies and cleaning stuff and it’s gone. honestly I remember when you could do a full trolley there for 60 and that wasn’t even that long ago

I don’t know if it’s just me cos the kids are eating more now like DS14 eats constantly and DD6 is so fussy I end up buying extra bits for her to actually eat something but it feels like no matter where I go (aldi lidl tesco) it’s all the same price now.

DP just rolls his eyes and says I must be wasting money but he doesn’t see how much food they all go through. DD16 eats like an adult now plus she had to get stuff for college lunches cos apparently “everyone else” takes meal deals 🙄 so I caved and got her some wraps and chicken bits which aren’t cheap either.

sorry long post I just wondered if anyone else feels like Aldi isn’t even cheap anymore or if I’m shopping wrong xx

I don't think it's cheap either. The packets are often slightly smaller than those in other supermarkets, the contents slightly less so it's hard to compare price and you feel it's cheaper but you're getting less. The quality is definitely not as good as other shops either - especially fruit and veg.

bluevelvetbox · 21/09/2025 14:36

I don't have an Aldi near me but feel exactly the same about Lidl OP.

LoafofSellotape · 21/09/2025 14:36

I did a Tesco shop yesterday ( most unusual but not well so need a delivery) the difference was about 25 quid co pared to usual Aldi shop. It used to be much more.

angelspike2025 · 21/09/2025 14:37

Everything has gone up but that does seem a lot for a few bits
I shop there and my full weekly shop is around £60 for me for all meals including lunch to take to work

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 21/09/2025 14:37

Agree and often the ingredients / quality is poorer for many products. I buy from independent butcher and greengrocer and find we waste less / tastes far better and cost wise comparable now.

Snorlaxo · 21/09/2025 14:50

The price difference has definitely shrunk imo. The other supermarkets must be “Aldi Price Matching”
the right items.

Food inflation continues to be high and very noticeable ime.

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/09/2025 14:51

What’s with the anti-Aldiposts atm? Tesco getting worried? 🤣

Just go somewhere else.

Abdican · 21/09/2025 14:56

thanks glad it’s not just me I honestly thought I was losing the plot cos everyone always goes on about Aldi being cheapest but I come out spending more than when I go Asda half the time

agree about the fruit and veg it goes off so quick I bought strawberries on Friday and by Saturday they were all mushy so then the kids moan cos they’ve got nothing nice for packed lunches and I end up running back out spending even more

I’d love to do butcher/greengrocer but I don’t drive and ours are a pain to get to on the bus with DS2 in the buggy so I just do Aldi cos it’s walking distance. DP says I should go Tesco cos they do more deals but I swear it’s all the same now

maybe I just need to meal plan better but with 5 of them eating different things it feels impossible lol xx

Not just you. £70+ for roast ingredients and lunchbox snacks for the week. It's disgusting.

MondeoFan · 21/09/2025 14:59

I’ve gone back to Tesco, honestly Tesco isn’t that much more expensive anymore, the stuff lasts longer and higher quality plus my DD always wants branded crisps and branded cheese spread etc

Roobarbtwo · 21/09/2025 15:01

My local aldi gives 30 quids worth of shopping if you buy a too good to go box

crazeekat · 21/09/2025 15:03

Tell ur dp to do the shop for two weeks. Give him the budget. Let him pick the stores and plan the meals. He won’t appreciate your efforts or believe how difficult it is till he does it.

crazeekat · 21/09/2025 15:07

Tesco is £2 more for minced beef than Aldis for exactly the same amount. I buy 5 of them to last a month. That’s £10 more in Tesco on just one item. For absolutely nothing.
however I totally agree in the grand scheme of it all aldis is mostly just as expensive or stuff not as good , and I was able to do a full shop there at one time. Now I’d rather spend the extra and do Tesco or whatever, but truth is I actually need to just cut costs and my daughters won’t be getting the top brands of cheese or crisps. If they don’t like it too bad. Don’t eat.

Roobarbtwo · 21/09/2025 15:11

I personally like Aldi. Apparently Asda is now slightly cheaper - it pays to shop around

Holidaytimeyay · 21/09/2025 15:20

Yes, I shop at Asda and top up at Lidl/Aldi. I don’t find Lidl/Aldi much cheaper than Asda, they are actually more expensive for some things and fruit/veg goes off quickly.
Yesterday, I went to Waitrose and their essentials brand seemed similar price to Asda.
Sometimes, I get last minute things from M&S when reduced. I definitely notice the price difference there, they are much more expensive but also notice the difference in quality. Quality does seem better at Sainsbury’s too.
Having been away recently to Europe though, our groceries still seem cheap compared to some countries. Obviously, prices have risen everywhere.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 21/09/2025 15:24

Nowhere is cheap anymore

Funny isn't it when there an almost the same title thread in active, maybe you're right it's some kind of guerilla marketing tactic

Do you work for a different supermarket@Abdican

Hah I was just thinking this.

Aldi is always cheap for us.

Abdican · 21/09/2025 15:40

yeah I think that’s what it is really nowhere is cheap anymore and it just feels harder cos there’s so many of us to feed. roast dinner today cost nearly 30 quid on its own and that’s before puddings or snacks and by Tuesday it’ll be gone cos DS14 eats like a horse and DD16 raids the fridge late at night 🙄

I’d love DP to do the shop but he’d just come back with frozen pizzas and multipacks of crisps and say it’ll do lol he don’t get that you have to think about pack ups and making stuff last. he reckons we should all just eat the same meals but he don’t get that DS10 won’t touch veg, DD6 lives off plain pasta and DS2 still has his bottles on top of food.

maybe I will try Asda or even Tesco next week just to see if it works out cheaper, but Aldi’s walking distance so it’s habit really. just feels like you can’t win xx

warmapplepies · 21/09/2025 15:46

Bloody hell @Abdican what are you buying to spend £30 on a roast?

Itsjustnotthevibe · 21/09/2025 15:47

Aldi has gone up in price but I think it's still cheaper for basics and they are nicer. Their chocolate bars for example are very much like the originals (e.g. snickers, mars etc) and are cheaper, yogurts, cheese, crisps, biscuits I think are cheaper. I usually do a big Aldi shop once a month for basics and then Tesco weekly because their clubcard deals are pretty good.

FamingolosForDays · 21/09/2025 15:48

No, you're right and I was chatting to the checkout lady who said exactly the same thing.
Since I've had joint problems I had to start getting my shopping delivered with Tesco and it is more expensive sure, but not as massive a difference as it used to be!

Netcurtainnelly · 21/09/2025 15:51

We do lidl, and sainsburys for things we can't get in lidl.
Sainsburys is expensive. Lidl have a good loyalty app.

Abdican · 21/09/2025 15:52

warmapplepies · 21/09/2025 15:46

Bloody hell @Abdican what are you buying to spend £30 on a roast?

honestly it adds up quick I got chicken big enough for all of us then spuds carrots broccoli yorkshires gravy then I picked up a cheesecake for after cos DD16 had her mate over and I didn’t want her embarrassed with nothing nice. plus stuffing cranberry sauce fizzy drinks etc so by the time you chuck all that in it’s basically 30 quid gone

I know I could do it cheaper but if I don’t get the extras someone always moans and then I feel guilty xx

Er, I've thought this for a few years already.
