To say Aldi is not even cheap anymore

basically I went earlier with DD16 and spent 97 quid and I don’t even feel like I got a proper shop it’s just bread milk fruit bits for lunches some nappies and cleaning stuff and it’s gone. honestly I remember when you could do a full trolley there for 60 and that wasn’t even that long ago

I don’t know if it’s just me cos the kids are eating more now like DS14 eats constantly and DD6 is so fussy I end up buying extra bits for her to actually eat something but it feels like no matter where I go (aldi lidl tesco) it’s all the same price now.

DP just rolls his eyes and says I must be wasting money but he doesn’t see how much food they all go through. DD16 eats like an adult now plus she had to get stuff for college lunches cos apparently “everyone else” takes meal deals 🙄 so I caved and got her some wraps and chicken bits which aren’t cheap either.

sorry long post I just wondered if anyone else feels like Aldi isn’t even cheap anymore or if I’m shopping wrong xx

Our basic shop from Aldi has gone up twenty quid a week in the last month or so. It's more expensive at Tesco still. I top up there. Particularly as we have allergies so need a lot of Gluten free food.

I meal plan and I also cook from scratch a lot. My Mum never threw away food so I grew up knowing how to use leftovers. Chicken goes in Thai noodle soup etc.

Still £80-120 a week for a family of four. Kids have pack ups and we eat non meat meals twice a week where we can. We eat less red meat these days but that's a choice, and fish is just as expensive.

I'd love to be able to visit local fishmonger / butcher but we both work FT.

Which one is that, I really don't like vacuum packed mince but for £2 a pack I'd give it another try so just checked and as an example 500g of 5% mince is 5.19 in Aldi, 5.29 in Tesco. No way am I changing for 10p 😀

There’s been about 3 today. Personally I find it great.

There's just two of us, and with a mixture of Aldi, Tesco and Waitrose we normally spend less than £50 a week. If we have family or friends coming it will obviously be a bit more. Teetotal vegans which probably helps to keep the costs down.

DH is normally the one who goes to Aldi, he says a couple of things have gone up recently.

Everywhere is expensive now. We have a choice of Lidl, Sainsbury's, Tesco's and Morrisons locally and shop mostly at Lidl. It's definitely the cheapest especially when you can do a big shop with 10% off coupon at the end of the month. Plus the various freebies the app gives throughout the month.

I think the price of food has basically doubled over the last 5 years.

I remember only used to spend £100+ on shopping at Christmas time. Now a weeks worth is costing that. Madness.

I think they take turns with special offers on products so you'd have to frequent them all to get the best deals, which is not really possible for most people.

I remember once DH came back from an Aldi shop with insane amounts of stuff. he had spent circa £120. My jaw dropped and I said - 'What? Did you actually BUY Aldi?'.

Now, £120 does not even touch the sides of our weekly shop.

Asda is definitely cheaper for us now, I used to be able to get a full weeks shop in Aldi for £60 now it's nearer to £90. asda is around £75 without cleaning bits a week but then that's mainly branded things so compared to Aldi I feel it's a better deal.

Aldi et al have always been cheap and cr@p, I spent years buying things that “looked” nice with good packaging but were such a let down. It was always a false economy.

Love Aldi - I buy mostly their frozen veg (plus their frozen pastries are better than Waitrose) plus cheese/general dairy and pasta and then almat and kitchen towel/loo roll/dishwasher tabs etc and wine. Their smoked salmon is half the price of Waitrose and much less than other places and also freezes very well. A big tray of eggs is the cheapest way to get them too.

The meat I buy comes from the butcher as I prefer local meat but as I don’t know what I want to eat until the meal time, batch cooking and freezing multiple meals I like and doing a shop every 9 days instead of 7 is more doable with frozen veg and fruit than fresh.

I find Lidl to be very reasonable and don’t have any problem with the fruit/veg. The only exception is berries only last a couple days but that seems to be the same with most supermarkets. About £45 a week for breakfasts, lunches and dinners plus about £70 a month at Costco for tinned staples and nuts etc. Plenty of fruit and veg as we avoid ultra processed foods.

We used to shop at Ocado and find the quality to be just as good, in fact the chicken we buy regularly is actually better.

It’s not. Tescos costs more but is better quality. Aldi and Lidl are on par but only get things you want to keep a day. Sainsbury’s is best and cheapest (as long as you’re not a slave to brands) and Ocado is pretty damn good too

I still spend far less at Aldi than at any other shop. Prices have definitely increased (in every shop) but Aldi still offers the best value for me. I went to sainsburys the other day and it was shockingly expensive. Plus their meat/chicken is shite.

Very low, cat and I nearer £50

The Aldi by me is consistently at least £20 per big weekly shop cheaper than the big Tesco. I’ll keep that saving, thanks. (No Asda nearby to compare).

I have a cat too but her food and litter is bought online so not included. Added in it's probably a other £5 or £6 a week. I'm on a tight budget so batch cook from scratch. Years of practice.

More kids than I would ever want, especially with what sounds like a bit of a useless DH, not surprising it’s expensive.

Do you know how to check the dates? Most have a code like A14 etc, which the letter corresponds to the month (a Jan, b Feb etc) and the number the date

Thought this for while. We dont bother anymore with lidl and aldi as going out of our way to get there is = to the saving imo. Family of 5 here with 2 children 7 and under. We do sainsburys instead and do alot of the aldis price matches but the veg lasts a week as opposed to 48 hours and the quality imo is better..

I used to be really loyal to Aldi but the quality especially fresh fruit and veg has gone down imo and with no real rewards/little difference in price, I have switched to Sainsburys/Morrisons/sometimes Asda for top ups. Quality is much better and fresh keeps longer. The nectar offers area big pull-10% off the shop on some of them.

I shop at loads of different places, depending on who does the best deals for that particular product. The days of doing the whole shop in one place are gone.

It is still cheap compared to Sainsbury's and Tesco etc.

I spent £96 in there yesterday and got a full shop for a week. IMO the best value of any supermarket. And disagree packet sizes are smaller - I normally shop there but did a Sainsbury’s shop a couple of weeks ago and packers were all smaller and more expensive.

£6.45 for a box of Weetabix in Aldi today - it’s a big box, but none the less!
