To say love of dogs has GONE TOO FAR !!

DP’s grandparent’s 60th wedding anniversary, and we are all in the Lake District to celebrate. Every pub and cafe is crawling with wet dogs. We went out for dinner this evening and the pub was full of incessantly yapping dogs. A woman let her dogs piss all over the floor of the bar - disgusting. When confronted, she just turned on her heel and left. It is almost as bad in London - going to the loo in a pub is fraught with danger as you may run trip over the leash of a sausage dog with complex emotional needs and break your neck 😡😡😡 AIBU to say all dog owners should have to have a license and go on a civic sense training course at a minimum / be made to live in one big kennel with their mutts away from us at a maximum?

These are my girls ❤️

They are very well behaved and I do take them to the odd cafe or garden centre.

The love of dogs doesn't go far enough imo, but I do wish more owners loved training their dogs, that seems to have went wildly downhill since covid.

But they're not "girls", they're animals, specifically dogs.

I'm curious as to why you refer to them as girls. It feels like you're humanising them, perhaps subconsciously projecting human qualities onto animals.

Why not say "these are my dogs" or "these are my pets"?

Frankenpug23 · 21/09/2025 11:16

I am with you OP, I have 2 dogs who I love very much they come with us to dog friendly beaches, forest walks, to the country park (where there is a dog walker outside cafe) they do not come to restaurants, inside cafes there is no need - nothing worse for my 2 than having to sit there for an hour smelling all that food 😀😂. This is of course with the exception of guide dogs/ dogs supporting people with disabilities.

As for the dog weeing and the owner not cleaning that up thats just disgusting!!

Dogs like these, you mean? 😃

It’s people like you, not dogs like these. Grinning about your dog’s feet and arse all over a seat meant for people. You aren’t funny, you’re selfish, inconsiderate and obnoxious.

Sorry to burst your bubble of overthinking on a Sunday morning, but I call them my girls because if I say "my dogs" people always ask if they are boys or girls. Nothing deeper than that.

Maybe I'll take your thoughts on board and start calling them my bitches though.

Idontdobumsex · 21/09/2025 11:42

I love dogs and have had dogs all my life but fucking hate the fact that they are allowed everywhere now.

Last week a woman was sauntering around my local H&M with a medium sized poodle! Wtf

Why are you so bothered? Does the pp referring to her dogs as ‘girls’ really have any impact on your life?

ilovepixie · 21/09/2025 11:54

Perfectly fine to take dogs into a cafe or restaurant if you’re out for a day with the dogs or out for a walk. But to take dogs shopping when they could easily be left at home is mad.

Onleemoi · 21/09/2025 11:54

They just need to feel superior in some small way. Policing dog owners language seems to bring joy to a lot of people.

Spicylittleorangecat · 21/09/2025 12:00

I'm a dog owner, a dog walker and have had dogs all of my life - I adore them.

However, I think we need to draw the line at dogs allowed in restaurants and shops. DD has a weekend job at The Range, they now allow dogs and luckily dd loves all animals but even she says it's getting too much. Last week a little puppy pooped (diarrhoea) right beside her till. The owners did clear it up but she said it left such a stench she felt really nauseated.

Unless it is an assistance dog then, like my pooch, they should be left in the comfort of their own homes if the owner needs to go out.

user2848502016 · 21/09/2025 12:00

I am a dog owner and lover, I like that some pubs allow dogs because it gives us options on days out - but my dog is vey well behaved and just lies under the table. I also think there are plenty of places that don’t allow dogs or only allow dogs in some areas.
There is no excuse for poor doggy behaviour though and if my dog barked a lot I would just not take him. Some dogs are annoying and shouldn’t be taken to restaurants!
I also don’t like dogs in shops, apart from pet shops, just don’t see then need to take a dog into Dunelm?!

LizaRadleywasonthespectrum · 21/09/2025 12:08

If Your dog is on an extendable lead it is not under control. They should be banned. Get a proper dog lead and teach your dog to stay to heel.

chattyness · 21/09/2025 12:25

I don't like dogs in cafes restaurants or shops either. I never take my dog into any of them, but that's mainly because I don't trust dog haters , irresponsible dog owners with their uncontrolled dogs and also uncontrolled evil children. I know not all kids & dogs are evil, but it only takes one to do the damage and then it's too late. My lovely dog is not going to suffer at their hands, boots and in the case of dogs - teeth.

Don’t blame the dog owners, blame the establishments. They have deemed it more profitable

Tutorpuzzle · 21/09/2025 12:30

I’m genuinely interested; have you @user2848502016 , complained to Dunelm? Or has @Spicylittleorangecat (great username) written to The Range? Or @Idontdobumsex (again, marvellous name), have you posted on H&M’s twitter?

Of course, anyone can post here about what they want, when they want. But these threads are so repetitive! And as more and more places (seemingly) accept dogs without opposition are people really be as bothered as they make out on here?

Except it has become so commonplace that we have now got to the point where if all places accept dogs, as a business you’re no more likely to attract customers than anywhere else. As a person who dislikes dogs and has allergies in the family, businesses are actually now losing me and others like me as customers.

No I haven’t because it’s more of a “rather not” to me than something I really care about. I have other things I would rather spend my energy complaining about. I am more puzzled about why anyone would think to take their dog into a shop like Dunelm tbh, I wouldn’t take mine.

I never get a response when I ask what action they’re taking. They like to come on here and tell dog owners that they are ENTITLED and their dogs SMELL but that’s where it ends. If googling dog free places is too much effort, they’ll never bother writing to businesses.

Some mumsnetters do seem to have an awful lot of trouble with dogs, stealing their picnics, weeing on their bags etc. Very odd that they seem to have issues every time they leave the house.

Me and the kids once had a dog run over and eat an entire pack of ham from our picnic, this was about 8 years ago and they still find it hilarious to remember now 😂

Yeah I never take my dog anywhere other than on walks around our local area, he is yappy and over excitable and it would not be a pleasant experience for anyone, including him. He's never set foot in a cafe, pub or shop.

Yes, I never understand why dog loathers so often have dogs jumping up at them. Do they keep sausages in their pockets, or what? I’m a dog lover who walks nearly every day in a big park where so many dogs are off the lead, and I get jumped up at maybe once in ten years.

How many times do we have to say it - hardly anywhere is dog-free now. That’s what we find out when we google.

No, I haven’t complained to H&M. I probably will if it happens again though. As I said in my other post, I love dogs and have dogs myself, but I’d rather they weren’t trotting round clothes shops. It just wouldn’t occur to me to take the dogs with me when I go into town.

Never happens to me either. I've never had one steal my food, wee on my bag, muddy my coat. Clearly, all these thousands of wayward and badly behaved dogs that are everywhere, know exactly who to target 😏

I dislike dogs. I’ve never had a dog steal my picnic and rarely had a dog jump on me in a cafe or pub (on a walk in a park is another matter - it happens more frequently than you’d probably imagine). What I have experienced on most occasions when I’ve been eating somewhere where there are dogs, is invasion of my personal space when they brush against me, being startled and made to jump when they suddenly bark loudly, and most often - waiting staff stroking a dog then immediately going on to prepare food and drink, it’s gross.
