To say love of dogs has GONE TOO FAR !!

DP’s grandparent’s 60th wedding anniversary, and we are all in the Lake District to celebrate. Every pub and cafe is crawling with wet dogs. We went out for dinner this evening and the pub was full of incessantly yapping dogs. A woman let her dogs piss all over the floor of the bar - disgusting. When confronted, she just turned on her heel and left. It is almost as bad in London - going to the loo in a pub is fraught with danger as you may run trip over the leash of a sausage dog with complex emotional needs and break your neck 😡😡😡 AIBU to say all dog owners should have to have a license and go on a civic sense training course at a minimum / be made to live in one big kennel with their mutts away from us at a maximum?

All cafes in museums/galleries (usually free entry), M&S and John Lewis cafes, Wetherspoons, most National Trust places have dog free restaurants…and this is just off the top of my head @NoSoapJustUseShowerGel . Plenty of independents too. I know because I go to them regularly with a group of friends, some of whom aren’t keen on dogs.
People are just too bone idle to make a 2 minute google to check.

No need to call me bone idle when I don’t need to do a google check to be informed of which places do/don’t accept in my own town - I’ve checked in person. Being a family with allergies, it’s something we’re hyper aware of. 90% of places here allow dogs. That’s a fact. The one decent cafe where dogs aren’t allowed is always full and you can rarely get a table. I’ve no interest in going to Wetherspoons for my coffee, thanks.

ACynicalDad · 21/09/2025 09:53

It takes some self awareness from owners, not all dogs should go out, but lots are beautifully behaved. I almost never take mine to a pub or cafe or even on the tube without someone asking for a stroke.

SeaAndStars · 21/09/2025 10:01

So many non dog owners telling dog owners what their dogs like.
My dog bloody loved a pub, would actively try to go in any pubs on walks. Warm fire, spilled crisps, a biscuit and bowl of water from the landlady and the odd chip under the table. Dog heaven.

boberto88 · 21/09/2025 10:03

dogs are better than humans

stayathomer · 21/09/2025 10:06

I’d kind of get it in the Lake District, people out for hikes with their dogs but also want to go into pubs

ChocolateCinderToffee · 21/09/2025 08:06

Dogs in pushchairs FFS what IS this? They’re NOT babies.

This is such a judgy and ill informed comment.

HangingOver · 21/09/2025 10:10

This is Chester. He is only allowed in cafés when I'm getting a takeaway coffee and I watch him carefully the whole time as he finds the whole world extremely exciting.

This because cruel and irresponsible humans fucked up the first year of his life, so his socialisation is delayed.

He thanks you for your patience.

I used to live in Cumbria, it's always been very dog friendly up there for walkers and dogs in pubs, but the lockdown dog people are a very different crowd. There's a lot of tiny yapping crossbreeds on extendable leads now, rather than the well trained gundogs or collies that the walkers have always tended to have.

John Lewis have a Santa’s grotto/meet Santa for dogs this year. The replacement of children with dogs seems to be becoming more common.

Do they? I’m going to go :-)

Bloody dog threads every week 😆

Tutorpuzzle · 21/09/2025 10:12

I wasn’t calling you bone idle @NoSoapJustUseShowerGel , I was just trying to make a (clearly useless) pun!

And yes, it must be a pain if you don’t like dogs, have allergies etc, because things are definitely more relaxed about where you can take them now. Which is great for me.

I think what gets me the most on these threads (and I definitely don’t comment on most of them) is the sense of entitlement that comes through (not from you!), that it’s outrageous that business owners are able to decide for themselves what type of customer they should allow in.

I can’t bear cafes that play music, any sort of music (different to allergies, I know) but I wouldn’t complain about it, I’d just go somewhere else.

The problem is “go elsewhere” often isn’t an option when most places accept dogs now. I’m sure most of us would be much less agitated about the “dogs everywhere” situation if there was a more even split of dogs allowed/dogs not allowed cafes.

GeorgeClooneyshouldhavemarriedme · 21/09/2025 10:17

I love seeing dogs when out and about, shopping and bars etc.
Obviously well behaved dogs.
YANBU to expect owners to control their pooches, unfortunately some people have no idea.

As a dog owner and fanatic I don't think it's possible for the dog love to go too far.
One of my dogs has almost 40,000 followers on Tik Tok 😅😅

TalulahJP · 21/09/2025 10:17

I don’t know which is worse:
My neighbours taking their dog to a pub or cafe where it barks loudly and pisses everyone off,
or
her not taking it and it barks continually with separation anxiety for the first hour they are out (and then a flurry of barking every 20mins for the duration after that) and pissimg me right off.

Chester is stunning! I’m so sorry that he had such a terrible start and that things get easier for him(And that the people who hurt him get what they deserve.)

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 21/09/2025 10:20

Chester has magnificent ears @HangingOver

I remember your first thread, pre-adoption and I'm so happy to see that things have worked out for you and for him. He's lovely ❤

DoinFineIThink · 21/09/2025 10:21

I thought you were on about the TV programme which I've never watched so nearly didn't open the thread but I'm bored 😂
Yeah, the whole dog thing in cafes is getting a bit daft now.
I mean, what's all the "doggy menus" about?!
What happened to just giving it a sausage off your plate?!
Also Puppacinos
You can even get pawsecco if it fancies a drink of champagne 🤪😂

Tutorpuzzle · 21/09/2025 10:28

It’s very clever marketing @DoinFineIThink , mine would be utterly thrilled with a sausage off my plate!

Jinglejanglebojangle · 21/09/2025 10:39

I like dogs but struggle when there are really yappy ones in cafes and their owners just let them get on with it, I find that really rude. Not the dog's fault but inconsiderate owners. If my 4 yr old child started yelling in a cafe I wouldn't just sit there and let him disturb everyone else (but there definitely are parents who wouldn't bother). All my local cafes let dogs in, there really aren't any options if you want to avoid dogs (we are very rural so maybe that is why?)

It's just lazy inconsiderate owners - same with all the dog poo on the streets in every town near where I live, just lazy dirty owners! I also organise an outdoor summer event, dogs are allowed but stall holders complain every year that dogs piss up against their stands (including food stands) and their owners do nothing, don't even bother to take them elsewhere (it's really rural so lots of other spaces, trees around). Some stall holders have started putting up signs saying 'if your dog pisses on it, you pay for it' as they are so fed up.

I really don't understand why anyone thinks it's ok to let their dog shit on the pavement and to just leave it there??

RosaMundi27 · 21/09/2025 10:47

I don't mind dogs in pubs or cafes as long as they're quiet. I do object to staff petting and handling customer's dogs and then going straight to make drinks and food. I have seen this a number of times and it's really not on.

RaininSummer · 21/09/2025 10:53

I have a dog myself but they do seem to getting everywhere right now. My partner was nipped by one in Costa yesterday when he intervened to protect a child. The woman with the nippy dog then gave my partner a load of abuse and scarpered. No apology. I just don't see why you need to take your dog to a coffee shop really.

Surely the worst is you going to a cafe to escape neighbour’s noisy dog, then them turning up when you’ve just ordered lunch 😩

Obviously the woman should have cleaned up the piss

but love of dogs doesn’t go far enough, thousands of cunts abandon dogs every year

Registration and licensing could cut this down.
