To say love of dogs has GONE TOO FAR !!

DP’s grandparent’s 60th wedding anniversary, and we are all in the Lake District to celebrate. Every pub and cafe is crawling with wet dogs. We went out for dinner this evening and the pub was full of incessantly yapping dogs. A woman let her dogs piss all over the floor of the bar - disgusting. When confronted, she just turned on her heel and left. It is almost as bad in London - going to the loo in a pub is fraught with danger as you may run trip over the leash of a sausage dog with complex emotional needs and break your neck 😡😡😡 AIBU to say all dog owners should have to have a license and go on a civic sense training course at a minimum / be made to live in one big kennel with their mutts away from us at a maximum?

Yep and that one independent is always full so it’s hard to get a table (therefore I’m not “sorted”) - rather supports the argument that people enjoy their coffee in a dog-free environment and other businesses would do well to take note.

As for it’s not in your coffee so what’s the harm, this has been answered numerous times by me and others in this thread so try to keep up - the smell, the barking, the hair/muddy paws on clothes, the invasion of personal space, the allergic reactions and the staff touching dogs then immediately handling food and drinks.

If you post up the name of your market town I'll try to find you some dog free alternatives.

Not sure. Maybe the coffee tastes good. Or the food is great. Or the prices are decent. I wouldn’t presume people visit just because it doesn't allow dogs.

No need thanks, it’s something I’ve researched thoroughly as I’m more than capable.

SeaAndStars · 21/09/2025 14:42

Sounds to me like you'd be better off drinking coffee at home as your current set up isn't making you happy.

Cherrytree86 · 21/09/2025 14:43

MagicLoop · 21/09/2025 14:23

Of course you're not curious. I think what you meant was not 'I am curious' but 'I am pointlessly snarky and judgmental'.

I sometimes called my children 'petal' or 'pumpkin' when they were little. I can assure you I was fully aware they were human. Also, I'm sure you are aware that it has always been perfectly normal to say 'Good boy/girl!' to a dog. Or even 'Who's a pretty boy!' to a parrot. There's really no need to disingenuously pretend you believe that people who say this don't know their dogs aren't human. Or that they are necessarily humanising them generally.

@Mybeautifuldogs

you say the love of dogs doesn’t go far enough in your opinion…out of interest, how far it should go? I mean, what do you think should be different?

And now we’re back to the point that people who don’t want to be around dogs must change their behaviour to accommodate those who want to take their dog everywhere. Well done.

You can buy proper machines.

It's not that she should drink coffee at home, it just might make her happier than finding the only dog free cafe in her market town is busy all the time.

hmm yeah I don’t think it’s Op that needs to change her behaviour and suck up the cost of buying a coffee machine. Humans are waaaaaay more important than dogs and they always will be. When dogs can go out and have a job and earn money and pay taxes etc etc then that might change but that impossible so 🤷‍♀️

It’s called a ‘free market’. Quite common. Dog owners make businesses more money.

Buy a flask.

It's not just changing your behaviour to accommodate dogs though is it.
You won't tolerate dogs. So you have an alternative, but it's too busy for you.

You won't stoop to Greggs. You choose to live in a place that has limited options.

It is you putting the limitations on yourself. We all have to adjust a bit, or make alternative arrangements.

Im sure that poster knows about free market. Doesn’t mean that it’s right though, and that she and others don’t have the right to complain about it. It’s shit.

why can’t the dog owners adjust by leaving their dog at home rather than dragging it into a cafe to take up space and stink the place out?

Then complain! Try to change things in real life. Complaining on here is pointless.

It's not the Inland Revenue who decides who goes into cafes, it's the shop and cafe owners.

Buying a coffee machine is almost definitely more cost effective than buying a coffee in a cafe every day, especially if cafes are fraught and don't make you happy.

YeOldeGreyhound · 21/09/2025 14:53

Oh, what an original thread for a Sunday afternoon. Never saw a thread like this before.
Have dog bums been obsessed over yet?

People taking their dogs to places that allow dogs are doing nothing wrong.

Because they don't have to. If the dog is welcome in the cafe, then it's welcome in the cafe.

PP could use other cafes but chooses not to.

Bumholes on chairs has been touched upon (ha), so has poo. Not got to robot dogs and are you a vegan quite yet though, so keep watching 😉

Yes I have ONE option out of approx 15 local places to have coffee/lunch so not really limited options. It’s completely disproportionate, and that’s the whole point.

It's gonna be like that in a market town. They just are dog friendly.
I thought you had two choices but rejected one (too busy) and another (too Greggs).

If something is available people will use it. People love their dogs and don’t want to leave them at home.

Tutorpuzzle · 21/09/2025 14:58

And I’m afraid, @Cherrytree86 , based on their most recent post, @NoSoapJustUseShowerGel really doesn’t understand a free market economy.

Surely there isn't a dog in every single cafe every single time you go into town though? That doesn't seem very likely... Or is just a complete avoidance of going anywhere a dog has ever set foot (or paw) that you are aiming for?
