Of all the things that would put you off giving someone a job, what’s the one thing that’s a definite no thanks.

OP posts:
Swimminglywell · 20/09/2025 14:50

I wouldn’t hire someone if they were unwell, because they are saying their time and productivity is more important than mine and that of my family and colleagues.

Judging by my DC's job hunting experience, it would seem being autistic makes someone unemployable.

I'm dyslexic and many employers think I am thick n stupid

I think 1 or 2 discrete tattoos is fine but people who have 1 tattoo after another are often addicted to the high having a tattoo gives them and are unlikely to be a calm stable member of a team.

Unlikely to be calm and stable because they have tattoos? 😂

How many of the angry, unstable people you've come across had tattoos?

dynamiccactus · 20/09/2025 17:26

StevieAnnSENMum · 20/09/2025 09:18

For example, if it did somehow come up in conversation that I am pansexual and not cisgender (though I'm not sure which gender I do identify as), and they started saying or doing things that made me feel threatened (for example, following me around and asking me deeply personal questions about whether I like to give it to people in the arsehole, or if I like fanny more than dick, and were harassing me if I chose not to answer (and yes, this has happened to me before, albeit not in a work setting)), I would feel like I was being put in danger.

Well keep a professional distance from colleagues and none of that should ever come up.

I can't imagine ever talking about my sex life at work except if people are very young (eg in Saturday jobs and maybe talking about they want to cop off with that night).

Picking their nose during the interview

What even is this take? I have upwards of 10 tattoos. A lot of them are, admittedly, stupid tattoos. I'm not unstable at all, though. I don't even know what else to say to this.

playyourway · 20/09/2025 18:53

I agree appearances and intelligence don't necessarily go hand in hand. But I hire people in a customer facing role. If you've got a facial spider web tat or a dotted line round your neck saying "cut here" you're not getting a job at my firm.

What about a pentagram on one of their fingers? 🤭

MyDogHumpsThings · 17/09/2025 14:27

Looking bored or unprepared.

This, I am no way an experienced interviewer. But if you don’t want the job just cancel the interview. It is better than wasting everyone’s time.

Also stating that you would readily hide a sex offenders history from your colleagues. That one was surreal.

Slimson70 · 20/09/2025 19:20

Pre interview must sift out CVs where it is not obvious what experience or skills make them a good candidate for the job.
At interview someone who fails to demonstrate any evidence of self development. You can be sure that person will resist change and reject innovation. Will see staff who want to progress as disturbing the boat

Outsideitsraining · 17/09/2025 14:51

Tattoos, coloured hair, stating their pronouns. Any of these three would be a straight no from me.

Well aren’t you a tribunal waiting to happen.

gamerchick · 17/09/2025 15:08

There have been plenty posts on here where the AL entitlement was important and absolutely would not settle for x Surely it's better to know of the starting block rather than wait until an offer is made? Being evasive means it's the minimum legal limit usually.

Companies should be transparent from the off anyway about AL, compensation (depending on whether it's fixed or not) and if overtime was available.

AL entitlement should be stated in the job ad, alongside any other benefits. It is part of the overall benefits package alongside pay. People shouldn’t have to ask at interview - if they are having to ask then you aren’t being transparent about the role.

Outsideitsraining · 17/09/2025 15:57

Depends on the role I suppose. I work in professional services. I wouldn’t take advice from someone who’s judgement was so poor they thought pink hat to be a wise choice.

I’ve had pink hair in the past and have been promoted 2 levels in 4 years and brought a lot of benefits to my organisation. Your loss. I feel I wouldn’t want to work for someone who judged on appearance anyway.

Stating pronouns
Facial piercings.
Face, neck, hand tattoos

Nice try, you are a bit late to this one. Are you trying to be edgy?

I see I'm not alone in being put off by pronouns. I wish someone would tell the young'uns how off-putting it is. I suspect a lot of them don't even have strong views on trans/gender issues, they've just been led to believe that stating your pronouns is the progressive, modern thing to do. If only they knew how many employers see it as a red flag.

Employers are missing out. And potentially landing themselves in a tribunal.

Hire on ability, you don’t have to like someone for them to be good at their job.

Unless you are employing porn stars their gender affirmations don’t affect you at all.

Judellie · 20/09/2025 20:39

Don't know why tattoos are an issue unless they're extreme. Once saw a programme about someone who had tattoos all over their arms and legs and turned out this had been recommended to them because they'd been badly burned in a fire and the tattoos were a way of covering up the burns.

Ability is not the only attribute to be successful / you need to have the right attitude - ability with poor attitude can be very destructive.

None of these are protected characteristics though. And managers won't put them down as the reason for refusal anyway, they'll find another way to frame it. As I said up thread, a lot of people need to learn to live on Planet Reality if they're job seeking.

MrsB2603 · 20/09/2025 21:22

I’m not sure if this comes across overly judgemental but something simple like being late for an interview and not phoning ahead to let me know - and turning up not dressed appropriately for an interview, I think it just means that if you don’t put effort in on that initial meeting when you’re trying to impress, then you probably won’t once you’re in the job and comfortable.

Iris2020 · 20/09/2025 21:26

Arrogance/self-importance and self-centeredness.

Thinkingaboutmoving · 20/09/2025 21:31

Nope, gender identity isn't a protected characteristic it's a personality trait which shouldn't meet the test of unlawful discrimination and a good indication to the recruiter that the person will be an attention-seeking pain in the rear end.

Gender reassignment, sexuality and sex are protected along with 6 other characteristics.

I can't believe how many people have said pronouns. The others are sort of silly and jovial but not hiring someone because they told you their pronouns is literally illegal. Gender is a protected characteristic. I hope these people are actually hiring managers.

Edited

If you have pronouns on your CV you're not getting an interview, simple as that. No way you're ever going to know the reason so it doesn't matter if it's illegal (which it isn't).
