To make a cheeky comment to my friend about this?!

Last night I hosted drinks and nibbles for a couple of friends; one of whom we haven’t seen in over a decade. I bought wine and nice wee snacks for us.
The local friend I see more regularly brought a box of posh crackers. Looking at the box, I could see that they are 6 months out of date. Not only that, but the date was covered with a weird sticky stuff that was murder to remove from my kitchen surface. Clearly the box had come from the deepest corner of her kitchen cupboard!
Wealthy friend, money no object. And to be honest, it grates a bit.
I’m tempted to make a light-hearted comment which shows that it hasn’t gone unnoticed.
A bit passive-aggressive maybe, but AIBU? And any funny suggestions of what it could be?!

Why bother? Maybe she just forgot and did it last minute.

I assume you enjoy her company to invite her. I wouldn’t be remotely bothered by that.

JoyfulSpring · 17/09/2025 07:47

Not worth it. If you had a nice time with your friends then concentrate on that.

Evaka · 17/09/2025 07:47

Oh I wouldn't be arsed. Sounds a bit thoughtless of her but I couldn't be fucked getting into a petty pass agg dispute over a box of crackers. Also if it's a best before date they'll still be good to eat. It's just a peak freshness/ quality indicator.

KimberleyClark · 17/09/2025 07:47

Wouldn’t blame you if you did. Beyond rude to bring old food from your house to a party.

BananagramBadger · 17/09/2025 07:48

What are you hoping to achieve? Being less close? Not seeing your friend again for a while?

SkankingWombat · 17/09/2025 07:51

Crikey, no I wouldn't want to embarrass my friend like that. I'd assume she'd not been able to get to the shops (something over-ran, forgot to stop off etc) and the crackers were the result of a panicked cupboard rummage to find something vaguely suitable. If she just grabbed and ran she could easily miss the date and sticky patch.

Agreed. It’s less insulting to bring nothing at all. She lives a 2 minute walk from me and passes two shops on the way.

If you cant have an open, honest conversation and a laugh about it but feel the need to get a passive aggressive poke in, cool that connection.

That is not friendship.

I hope, despite that irk, you all had a good time x

Stichintime · 17/09/2025 07:54

Yummy. I wouldn't mention it, but would check anything else she might bring in the future carefully!

CatherinedeBourgh · 17/09/2025 07:55

Why is it rude to bring nice food from your house to a party? And who looks at dates on crackers?

ilovesooty · 17/09/2025 07:55

No, I wouldn't be making a light hearted comment. Either say something sincere about it or let it go.

Agree with this. I wouldn't say anything.

And if she chooses to eat it, that is absolutely fine. But it’s not for company.

Of course it’s rude to bring out of date food 😄

Yes, what do you hope to achieve by this? To embarrass your friend? Cause a row? Make her squirm?

TBH I’d probably laugh if my best friend did this. But then again. I like my friends more than I value a packet of crackers and know that sometimes they’re busy / stressed / forgetful.

GleisZwei · 17/09/2025 07:59

Are they actually off?
Was it BB or use by?
Crackers might actually be ok if they're well packaged.
I don't think it's necessarily rude if she'd happily eat them too, but then I hate waste.

Shinysunday · 17/09/2025 08:00

Why did you check the date? She probably didn’t. Are you envious that she has more money than you?

PestoHoliday · 17/09/2025 08:02

You'd be petty to mention it.

HoratioBum · 17/09/2025 08:03

Jesus, how sticky was the sticky stuff that made it so difficult to remove??

rainbowunicorn · 17/09/2025 08:03

You are coming across as not very nice to be honest. Im sure she didn't do it on purpose. She probably picked them up out of her cupboard without even looking at the date so wasn't aware. Seems a shame you want to have a dig at her though. You dont sound like a particularly good friend.

Evaka · 17/09/2025 08:04

feedmefudge · 17/09/2025 07:57

Of course. But it sounds like a minor error? It's just not that deep. Is she some sort of frenemy? You seem very ruffled by something that most people wouldn't notice judging by my reaction and other comments.

vincettenoir · 17/09/2025 08:05

I think you’ve missed your chance now the night’s over.

ComfortFoodCafe · 17/09/2025 08:05

why did you look at the date? Was you actively looking for something to bitch about?
