To make a cheeky comment to my friend about this?!

Last night I hosted drinks and nibbles for a couple of friends; one of whom we haven’t seen in over a decade. I bought wine and nice wee snacks for us.
The local friend I see more regularly brought a box of posh crackers. Looking at the box, I could see that they are 6 months out of date. Not only that, but the date was covered with a weird sticky stuff that was murder to remove from my kitchen surface. Clearly the box had come from the deepest corner of her kitchen cupboard!
Wealthy friend, money no object. And to be honest, it grates a bit.
I’m tempted to make a light-hearted comment which shows that it hasn’t gone unnoticed.
A bit passive-aggressive maybe, but AIBU? And any funny suggestions of what it could be?!

That was nice that you held a get together for your pals. Sounds like you are from Glasgow,as that is the type of thing we do up there. I think you and your friend can just laugh about the crackers,no harm done.

Ah! Thank you for explaining it’s a cultural difference. Here I was, in Devon, wondering what this concept of a get together with pals was! 😂

What, have friends round for a get together?

AmbeeBambee · 17/09/2025 10:32

Is this a friend you need an excuse to never see again? If so, bring it up but other than that, she probably thought she wouldn't use the crackers normally and decided to bring them along, not thinking to check the date...
Personally, if I have friends over I tell them not to bring anything at all - because I invited them to my house.

Shewasafaireh · 17/09/2025 10:39

I think it would be far ruder to mention it and be passive aggressive.

DiscoBob · 17/09/2025 10:39

I would be happy with their company. I guess I'd share out the food and drinks I bought, then when/if it ran out ask one or both friends to pop to the local shop and grab a couple more bottles etc. Or otherwise just wait till they host me and enjoy the food and drink they supply then.

Alliod40 · 17/09/2025 10:39

Hope she sees this and drops you as a friend..how up your own ass are you though ?? It's crackers fgs get over it !!!

Checking best before dates?

Checking best before dates?

Or sending snarky messages about the poor quality offerings, maybe?

FiveShelties · 17/09/2025 10:50

As long as the out of date posh crackers were accompanied with posh wine, I cannot see any problem.

Yep-it’s an alien concept here in Kent too….

teawamutu · 17/09/2025 10:50

Adding to the chorus - not cheeky, passive aggressive.

And you know that, because you asked on MN.

I wouldn’t say anything but buy a box of crackers now and let them expire and then take them round when she invites you.

The level of pettiness is wild.

CatherinedeBourgh · 17/09/2025 07:55

Why is it rude to bring nice food from your house to a party? And who looks at dates on crackers?

As Lady Catherine says, she wasn't being rude.

I'm sure the Crackers were perfectly good, and making a pass-agg remark will probably drive her away. Best to leave it.

Isn’t it just? I am generally friends with people because I like them, and thinking of ways to embarrass/shame them isn’t usually on my agenda.

SashaGeorgia · 17/09/2025 11:00

Definitely don’t say anything let it go it’s too trivial to lose a friend over. The sticky is probably golden syrup or honey. Made me laugh and reminded me of my BF from years ago when her mother presented her with some salad cream which was 15 years out of date. She then proceeded to to tell my friend that the dates were just a formality. I can’t look at salad cream without thinking of this

feedmefudge · 17/09/2025 07:57

And if she chooses to eat it, that is absolutely fine. But it’s not for company.

You need to dump her as a friend.

She'll probably appreciate it.

I'm from London. What's a "get together with pals"? Never heard of such a thing down here 🙄

Would you really? That’s a not a way to have a content life , I’m really sorry.

PollyBell · 17/09/2025 11:05

I cant say crackergate would have me mentally calculating the cost of crackers in relation to earning level of said cracker carrier

Ie caring about crackers would not enter my head at all, they are crackers

Seeyouincourtkeith · 17/09/2025 11:05

If a box of fucking crackers is causing this level of thought you must lead a very dull life.

butterdish93 · 17/09/2025 11:05

Oh, don’t be horrible

1stjjohnnymac · 17/09/2025 11:05

Just shrug and bin them or give them back suggesting she returns them as their way out of date of you want to be a little devilish 😁
