To think there is some kind of weird push towards the far right?

I’m the first to admit that I am not the best informed - I prefer to keep my life stress free and simple as much as possible, and don’t have a TV, don’t read papers, and only listen to the radio when I’m driving (which is quite often). For my own mental health I prefer to live in my own little bubble.

But even with my limited exposure to media, I’ve noticed on Radio 2, both on the news and Jeremy Vine’s show, Reform are being given so much air time considering their paltry amount of MPs, the polls are being discussed regularly even though we’re years from an election. More than once listening to the radio I’ve thought the way they’re talking makes it sound like Reform winning the next election is a done deal, and thought to myself that this is how self fulfilling prophecies happen.

My algorithms on FB are seriously messed up. Despite having never been remotely interested in anything in the least bit right wing, all of a sudden I’m getting endless posts from knuckle dragging ‘patriot’ groups that I don’t even follow, with really horrendous and openly racist comments, thousands of them, which somehow FB are allowing to remain even though any kind of hate speech has always been censored on there. Why are these posts suddenly being allowed and pushed in my face?

Alongside this there seems to be a new story pretty much every day about the latest scandal involving Labour (again reported by the BBC), ok these things aren’t great although compared to the Tories’ rap list from their last spell in government, are fairly small fry really. It seems like there’s an active push for people to rebel away from the left just as the far right are gaining momentum.

Has anyone else noticed this or am I talking shite?

So when you extol the virtues of multiculturalism, you mean every other culture than ours. And you think this is a winning strategy? 😄

No other country has given so much to the world. We have more than most countries and peoples to be proud of.

We’re no longer listening to people like you, who don’t wish this county well or want the best for British people. You can denigrate us if you like, it makes no difference. We won’t be ashamed of our culture and our history. We can tell the difference between friends who can give constructive criticism and those who just seek to destroy.

You didn't answer the question

Digdongdoo · 16/09/2025 10:43

Since when are awful drawings of black people "our culture"? Not everything ever done by a Brit is a representation of culture. What a daft thing to say. We've got galleries full of art work, not everything can be on display.

Edited

They’re not ‘awful drawings’.

I’m sure you’ve never seen the artwork.

As I said - he’d have done better not to include them at all - portray only the white people on the day of resurrection. He couldn’t win either way. To smear him as a racist long after his death when he tried to be inclusive of all mankind is ridiculous.

Yup. Utter lack of the ability to think critically.

we really need to teach critical thinking at schools more especially in the context of media analysis.

ThatCyanCat · 16/09/2025 10:46

WWI and II are unusual, I think, in that everyone agrees who the bad guys were, including the country that originally produced them. I don't think it's common to have that kind of consensus.

Id argue that any/every party has moved further right on the political scale purely by default, caused by the lack of any real left wing/left leaning parties now.

Labour, traditionally left wing and more socialist, havent been left wing for a long long time. Blair brought Labour to the centre, and we all know what happened when Corbyn threatened to return it to its roots.

So if everything has moved to the right, then those traditionally right wingers have moved further right

What you say doesn’t quite add up. Being on the right is very different to being fascist. So while it makes sense that some on the left shift right it is a very big leap to go from right wing (or left) to fascism.

it was evident that there were fascistic elements in the last Tory government and those facilitated the current move to where we are now. Johnson challenged our democracy but failed as many saw the danger behind the bumbling exterior. It was amazing to see Tory grandees criticising him but that gave me hope.

My further hope is that jumping on the far right bandwagon is just a survival strategy by both Labour and Conservatives.

ColdSalads · 16/09/2025 10:47

Catsandcheese · 16/09/2025 10:44

It is very clear who the fascists are. They’re the ones telling you that your lives are ruined because of a few tens of thousand people crossing the channel, seeking asylum. Ignoring the fact that the legal migration is a potential problem but as our birth rates don’t support the population we do actually need migration. But don’t let the facts get in the way of your already entrenched ideals, Reform are going to sort all this out for you.

The population of the UK has grown incredibly quickly over the last 2 decades, ridiculously fast - and it's not the British birthrate driving that, do you think we're stupid not realise this - do take your "a few tens of thousands" - that line doesn't work anymore.

It’s not worth the effort. You hate this country, the culture and the history and don’t have its best interests at heart. But you’re a tiny minority, thankfully.

ColdSalads · 16/09/2025 10:45

Almost as classical as the "our grandparents fought against fascism during the 2nd world war so men could use the women's toilets today"

No one is saying that.
Another propaganda cliche.

The left already control most, if not all, of the education system from age 3 to 23

H34th · 16/09/2025 10:49

There is a push and it’s landing well with the people who are ‘going with their hearts’.

Even on mumsnet there’re multiple threads about Starmer being ‘toast’ and the need for re-election - if they are bots they are effective ones.

Digdongdoo · 16/09/2025 10:49

Now why do you think anyone would want to spoil their own country? What's your logic with statements like that?

Ah, insult and deflect.
You don't have an answer.
I love this country thanks. But because I don't love it the way you think I should, you will shut me down. So very predictable.

Digdongdoo · 16/09/2025 10:44

That is taught in schools. Along with our participation in slavery.

Britain was the nation that ended slavery, and spent enormous amounts of money and thousands of lives in ensuring it ended around the globe.

You’re welcome! ☺️

The data is there for you to look at. 90% of immigration is legal now due to the fact that there is no way of entry for asylum seekers EXCEPT small boats.
But you don’t mind the Australians and South Africans, or the students coming here to study, you object to the hugely smaller numbers coming from Middle Eastern countries with a different culture. Somebody’s told you they’re bad and you’ve fallen for it hook line and sinker.

Astroturfer · 16/09/2025 10:53

I’ve had to name change for this. The reality is more sinister. These algorithms of course have become self generative but just a handful of years ago, they were very much deliberately planned and financed by extremely wealthy tycoons. I never worked on these specific projects but worked very closely to people who did and they kept schtum about the details. I know enough to know the alt-right phenomenon was definitely orchestrated initially (I believe by hedge fund owners) but not enough to name them. I always scoffed at conspiracy theorists before realising the truth is even more alarming

I love our culture - British music is some of my favourite from the Kinks, Beatles, Oasis to Ed Sheeran, Adele etc - I think for a small island we more than outdo ourselves.

We have outstanding British film and acting talent, a fabulous theatre district, a great co.edy history.

I love our preservation of heritage through the national trust, English heritage, London palaces and Royal Greenwich Museums and have subscriptions to all of them.

I am fascinated by our rich history, especially the Plantagenats, Tudors and Victorians.

I also love the way we embrace other cultures and incorporate them into our own from the creation of chicken tikka masala, the incorporation of ska and R&B into our popular music, to the acknowledgement of other culture and religions celebrations.

Nowhere have I said that I don't wish our country well, nor have I denigrated anything about our history.

On the other hand, you have not stated what it is about British culture you are so proud of exactly? Can you give any specifics?

It is worth the effort because it is fundamental to your argument about the shift to the far right. If you are unable to answer this your argument and allegiance do not hold water

Reminds me of this line from the Mikado: ‘The idiot who praises, with enthusiastic tone, all centuries but this, and every country but his own’

The type of person Orwell describes; they “feel more ashamed of standing to attention during 'God Save the King' than stealing from a poor box"

Quite. The MSM is most definitely fueling the flames, including the so called impartial, licence payer funded Beeb. It’s impossible not to see this is clearly a top-down narrative that’s being fed to us.

This might explain it -

Vaguely, but I don’t remember it being given so much air time, or overt racism becoming acceptable on social media.

This is well worth listening to… it addresses the shift since 2009.

How exactly, do the left control the education system, when the right have been in charge of government and therefore the curriculum and teaching standards for 31 of the past 45 years.

Stop it with the soundbites and use specifics.
