Gravy for a baby?!

RealReginaPhalange · 14/09/2025 14:55

6.5months old baby, weaning started about 2 weeks ago, he is doing not bad so far. Been told to give him gravy (like a bisto one). Rejected the idea and i am the bad one (again).

my second child so i know what i am doing. My first one ended up eating everything i serve, loving veggies etc, so not everything i do is stupid obviously…it worked before.

aibu to said no? Wont be giving my ds bisto gravy?

Who told you to give your baby gravy?

minipie · 14/09/2025 14:56

wow the salt content.
nope

AhBiscuits · 14/09/2025 14:56

Way too salty. Yanbu.

AndSoFinally · 14/09/2025 14:56

I would think way too much salt!! No

Bitzee · 14/09/2025 14:57

Who told you that? It’s quite salty so it’s not something I’d give them regularly if at all- maybe a teeny drizzle with Christmas dinner but otherwise no.

BallerinaRadio · 14/09/2025 14:57

Drizzle of gravy over their roast dinner yum mine loved it

smallpinecone · 14/09/2025 14:58

Please don’t! It’s far too salty! 😱

TheCosyViewer · 14/09/2025 14:58

I wouldn’t give Bisto or the like to a baby because of the salt content but would add home-made gravy to their puréed veg/potato, if gravy was being served with what everyone else was eating.

jettisoned · 14/09/2025 14:58

Homemade - fine as you can take out a portion before seasoning. Bisto is grim and way too salty

minipie · 14/09/2025 14:58

If they meant just the meat juices then yes great, mix it into their mash, tasty and nutritious. But bisto… no

AhBiscuits · 14/09/2025 15:00

This is extreme, but gravy should not be fed to babies in anything other than minute quantities, if at all.

Gravy for a baby?!
RealReginaPhalange · 14/09/2025 15:01

My in-laws! Same people who told me i should let them raise my first child for a couple of years, when he was a baby, so i can work full time and recover our savings and pay debts quicker. (They live on the other side of the world and my visa was rejected so i wouldnt be able to go there in case anything happens). Got very offended when i said no, apparently i am “precious”, others do it.

And they meant bisto, not homemade. Who on earth would make it at home if you can get delicious bisto (i am being ironic btw).

Absolutely not. Babies are not supposed to have salt.

JDM625 · 14/09/2025 15:26

I can't believe some people on here think a baby can have even home made gravy!!! Why?

Why not also give him a beer and a cigar?

MyDeftHedgehog · 14/09/2025 15:26

Are they meaning just a bowl of gravy as a meal or gravy poured on the meal?
You can buy reduced salt gravy granules which im sure wouldn't harm a small child in a small anount

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/09/2025 15:29

Absolutely not! All that salt!

Lucky they live on the other side of the world so that you can ignore them more easily.

Why could a baby that is being weaned onto food not have home-made gravy ?? I don’t add any salt when making it ?

FuzzyWolf · 14/09/2025 15:31

Salt free gravy is absolutely fine.

Bistro is upf and way too salty for a baby that age! If your other child eats well I’d stick to whatever you did the first time.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/09/2025 15:34

Bloody hell. Of course YANBU, doesn’t everyone know bisto is basically salt goop with no nutritional value and babies shouldn’t be given added salt? Being told you ‘should’ give a baby who is just starting weaning gravy is plain daft. The flavours of actual food will be interesting enough at this stage without requiring flavour enhancers.

It doesn't half taste good though 😅😅

supersonicginandtonic · 14/09/2025 15:36

Home made gravy is fine. Bisto not so much x

SouthLondonMum22 · 14/09/2025 15:36

Realistically, 2 weeks into weaning, they are hardly going to be eating loads of it anyway but of course it is your choice.

Mine have had all things in moderation since weaning age, including bisto gravy and eat very well too.
